Sermon teaching #7 Rather than retaliation... Matt 5:38-42 We've seen the 10 Commandments given on Mt. Sinai (also called Mt. Horeb)-- inscribed by the Finger of GOD (Exo 20:1-17; 31:18; Deu 9:10-- the remainder of the Law was given upon Moses' return (Exo 20:18-21; 20:22 - 40:38. We also saw that various instructions were given to Moses: at the Tent of Meeting (Lev 1:1 - 27:34), & , some 40 yrs. later on the plain of Moab (Num 28:1 - 30:6). Neglected was that this all (beginning with the 10 Commandments) was repeated by Moses in Moab in what is commonly called his 2nd Address (Deu 5:1 - 28:68)-- though mention should be made: Deu 29:1 says, These are the terms of the covenant Moses was commanded to make with the Israelites in Moab, in addition to the covenant He had made with Them at Horeb (Sinai); Deu 31:9 says, So Moses wrote this Law & gave it to the priests. Jesus said to his disciples (followers)-- but in the hearing of the crowds (see 5:1-2; 7:28-29),  You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, & tooth for tooth. Exo 21:23-24 says concerning men fighting & hitting a pregnant woman, But if there is serious injury, You are to take life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise. Lev 24:19-22 says, If anyone injures his neighbor, whatever he has done must be done to him: fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. As he has injured the other, so must he be injured. Whoever kills an animal must make restitution, but whoever kills a man must be put to death. You are to have the same law for the alien & the native-born. Deu 19:16-19,21; 21:22-23 says (notice the absence of the highlighting, as we saw in the last teaching above, indicating this is not a direct quote, but a paraphrase), If a malicious witness takes the stand to accuse a man of a crime, the 2 men involved must stand in the Presence of the LORD before the priests & the judges who are in office at that time. The judges must make a thorough investigation, & if the witness proves to be a liar, giving false testimony against his brother, then do to him as he intendeded to do to his brother. Show no pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot. If a man guilty of a capital offense is put to death & his body is hung on a tree, You must not leave his body on the tree overnight. Be sure to bury him that same day, because anyone who is hung on a tree is under GOD'S Curse. You must not desecrate the land Your GOD is giving You as an inheritance. But I tell You, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes You on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue You & take Your tunic, let him have Your cloak as well. If someone forces You to go 1 mile, go with him 2. Give to the 1 who asks You, & do not turn away from the 1 who wants to borrow from You. Deu 15:7-8,10 says (yet paraphrasing God-- & revealing why it is said Moses had a heart after GOD), If there is a poor man among Your brothers in any of the towns of the land that the LORD Your GOD is giving You, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward Your poor brother. Rather be openhanded & freely lend him whatever he needs. Give generously to him & do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the LORD Your GOD will bless You in all Your work & in everything You put Your hand to. There will always be poor in the land. Therefore I command You to be openhanded both toward Your brothers & toward the poor & needy in Your land. The point should be made that generous giving is not a thing-of-the-past (as witness the "one-anothers" we Christians are to do), but understand it must be done after salvation-- it does not earn one salvation, no more than performing charities before salvation (as mentioned in Sermon1 Sermon teaching #1 Salt & light). Also, any hippie-turned-Christian should realize that the sharing-of-flesh is excluded from the one-anothers!

Sermon teaching #8 How/Who to love (Transition #1) Matt 5:43-48 Jesus said to his disciples (followers)-- but in the hearing of the crowds (see 5:1-2; 7:28-29), You have heard that it was said, Love Your neighbor (Lev 19:18) & hate Your enemy. This teaching was covered in Psalms 36 - 41 Psalm 38 1. Transition #1Love-boundary-- the Transition is full of Grk. & commentary (& is somewhat confusing) but Lev 19:18b point out that indeed they were told to love their neighbors. But it is not ever mentioned that they were to hate their enemies, as it was interpreted in Matt 5:43b (rather, Lev 19:18 has love Your neighbor as yourself-- though there were times (like when establishing themselves in Canaan, & after the Balaam affair) where they were told, Don't seek a treaty of friendship with them as long as You live (Deu 23:6). But prior to that God told them to 'have the same law for the alien & the native-born (Lev 24:22)'. But I tell You: Love Your enemies & pray for those who persecute You, that You may be sons of Your FATHER in Heaven. HE causes HIS Sun to shine on the evil & the good, & sends rain on the righteous & the unrighteous. If You love those who love You, what reward will You get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if You greet only Your brothers, what are You doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your Heavenly FATHER is perfect. Luke 6:27-36 Jesus said to his disciples (followers)-- but in the hearing of the crowds (see 6:17), But I tell You who hear Me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse You, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on 1 cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, & if anyone takes what belongs to You, do not demand it back. Do to others as You would have them do to You. If you love those who love You, what credit is that to You? Even 'sinners' love those who love them. And if you lend to those from whom You expect repayment, what credit is that to You. Even 'sinners' lend to 'sinners', expecting to be repaid in full. But love Your enemies, do good to them, & lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, & you will be sons of the Most HIGH, because HE is kind to the ungrateful & wicked. Be merciful, just as your FATHER is merciful.

Vengeance "re-focused" These are some graphic revenge-rules from the O.T.:

  • Exo 21:22-25 has Moses quoting God in the desert after leaving Egypt, likely near Mt. Sinai: If men who are fighting hit a pregnant woman & she gives birth prematurely but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined whatever the woman's husband demands & the court allows. But if there is serious injury, You are to take life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, fot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.
  • Lev 24:17-21 has Moses again quoting God, now distinctly at the foot of Mt. Sinai, as to how the Israelites were to conduct their lives-- recall Plan A was for Israel to soon enter Canaan after the spies were sent: If anyone takes the life of a human being, he/He must be put to death. Anyone who takes the life of someone's animal must make restitution-- that animal life for the same animal life. If anyone injures his/His neighbor, whatever he/He has done must be done to him/Him: fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. As he/He has injured, so must he/He to be injured. Whoever kills an animal must make restitution, but whoever kills a man must be put to death. You are to have the same law for the alien & the native-born.
  • Deu 19:16-21 has Moses instructing some 38 yrs. later-- in his 2nd address, prior to the Israelites entering Canaan: If a malicious witness takes the stand to accuse a man of a crime, the 2 men involved in the dispute must stand in the presence of the Lord before the priests & the judges who are in office at that time. The judges must make a thorough investigation, & if the witness proves to be a liar, giving false testimony against His brother, then do to Him what He intended to do to His brother. You must purge the evil from among You. The rest of the people will hear of this & be afraid, & never again will such an evil thing be done among You. Show no pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

In comparison, we saw (above) Jesus making some mild statements when he said things like love Your enemies, bless them who curse You & do to others as You would have them do to You. About the most violent injury-wise was, If someone strikes You on the cheek, turn to him the other also. So he was saying the court-system should be more lenient/considerate (note that they did have a court-system in O.T. days-- see the 1st & 3rd examples above).
