A. By the Sea of Galilee (Lake of Gennesaret; Sea of Tiberias)

  1. 4 fishermen followed (became disciples of) Jesus [6] 3. above

  • Matt 4:18-22 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw 2 brothers before they saw Him, Simon called Peter & His brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for They were fishermen. Come, follow Me, Jesus said, & I will make You fishers of men. At once They left Their nets & followed Him. Going on from there, He saw 2 other brothers before they saw Him, James son of Zebedee & His brother John. They were in a boat with Their father Zebedee, preparing Their nets. Jesus called Them, & immediately They left both the boat & Their father & followed Him.
  • Mark 1:15-20 The time has come, He said. Get ready to receive that The Kingdom of GOD is near. Repent (Admit) & believe the good news-- the 1st 2 letters of the ABCs (see CommentsOLD In General). As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon & His brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for They were fishermen. Come, follow Me, Jesus said, & I will make You fishers of men. At once They left Their nets & followed Him. When He had gone a little farther, He saw James son of Zebedee & His brother John in a boat, preparing Their nets. Without delay He called Them, & They left Their father in the boat with the hired men & followed Him.

  2. 3 fishermen, dazzled by Jesus, re-followed Him [6] 5. above-- apparently Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, had not returned to his preoccupation; the others had ceased following Him for reasons like concern about their sin nature; note that Jesus had already set the example, when He left His family in Capernaum & went to Jerusalem:
  • Luke 5:1-11 1 day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the people crowding around Him & listening to the Word of GOD, He saw at the water's edge 2 boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing Their nets. He got into 1 of the boats, the 1 belonging to Simon, & asked Him to put out a little from the shore. Then He sat down & taught the people from the boat. When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, Put out into deep water, & let down the nets for a catch. Simon answered, Master, we've (I the boat owner My team companions/hired men have) worked hard all night & haven't caught anything. But because You say so, I will let down the nets. When They (Simon & His team companions/hired men) had done so, They caught such a large # of fish that Their nets began to break. So They signaled Their partners in the other boat (the boat co-owners team companions/hired men of the other team-- the co-owners of the other boat were brothers James & John) to come & help Them, & They came & filled both boats so full that they began to sink. When Simon Peter (the humble, confessing, repentant Rock-- about whom later Jesus said, 'I will build MY Church upon this Rock') saw this, He fell at Jesus knees & said, Go away from Me, Lord; I am a sinful man! For He & all His companions (hired men) were astonished at the catch of fish They had taken, & so were James & John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon's partners (boat co-owners, James & John). Then Jesus said to Simon in particular, Don't be afraid about your sin nature; from now on You will catch men. So They pulled Their boats up on shore, left everything & followed Him.

  3. Matthew (Levi), the tax collector, became the 7th disciple [8] 1. above

  • Matt 9:9-13 Rehearsing: Jesus had taken Philip back from the Jordan upon His being baptized, & shortly thereafter acquired Nathaniel in Galilee-- see BeforeMinistry Also prior...). Then He: gained 4 (Andrew, Simon Peter, James & John); lost 3 (Simon Peter, James & John) & regained these 3 (as we saw above in 1. & 2.). Thus He had 6 permanent/steadfast disciples at this point-- disciples, as opposed to the crowd, the many temporary followers we saw in Capernaum1 B. 4.- 6. As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth. Follow Me, He told Him, & Matthew got up & followed Him. While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors & "sinners" (authorities-- presumed to be motivated to determine how to acquire greater sacrifice) came & ate with Him & His disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, They asked His disciples, 'Why does Your teacher eat with tax collectors & "sinners"?' On overhearing this, Jesus said, It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go & learn what this means: I desire mercy, not sacrifice-- quote from Hos 6:6a. For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.
  • Mark 2:13-17 Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to Him, & He began to teach them. As He walked along, He saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector's booth. Follow Me, Jesus told Him, & Levi got up & followed Him. While Jesus was having dinner at Levi's house, many tax collectors & "sinners" were eating with Him & His disciples, for there were many who followed Him. When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw Him eating with the "sinners" & tax collectors, they asked His disciples: 'Why does He eat with tax collectors & "sinners"?' On hearing this, Jesus said to them, It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.
  • Luke 5:27-32 After this, Jesus went out & saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. Follow Me, Jesus said to Him, & Levi got up, left everything & followed Him. Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at His house, & a large crowd of tax collectors & others were eating with Them. But the Pharisees & teachers of the Law who belonged to Their sect (Jewish division) complained to His disciples, 'Why do You eat & drink with tax collectors & "sinners"?' Jesus answered them, It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

B. On/by the Sea of Galilee (Lake of Gennesaret; Sea of Tiberias)

  18 boat parables given to the crowd [8] 8. above

  After He had 12 disciples; they are called boat parables here, in this time period, to set them apart from the many other parables given later-- but it is not clear if they all were given from a boat (indeed, 1 was subsequently explained to the disciples in a house). Listed below are these 8 parables (treated in full in Parable1 Parable2):
  • 4 Soil Types (subsequently explained to the disciples);
  • Scattered Seed;
  • Wheat & Weeds (subsequently explained to the disciples);
  • Mustard Seed;
  • Yeast in Dough;
  • Found Treasure;
  • Found Pearl;
  • Full Fishing Net.
C. On the Sea of Galilee

  1. Jesus calmed the winds & waves [9] above

  • Matt 8:23-27 Then He got into the boat & His disciples followed Him. Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went & woke Him, saying, Lord, save Us! We're going to drown! He replied, You of little faith, why are You so afraid? Then He got up & rebuked the winds & the waves, & it was completely calm. The man were amazed & asked, 'What kind of man is this? Even the winds & the waves obey Him!'
  • Mark 4:35-41 That day when He had given the boat parables, when evening came, He said to His disciples, Let Us go over to the other side. Leaving the crowd behind, They took Him along, just as He was, exhausted, in the boat. There were other boats with Him. A furious squall came up, & the waters broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern (back of the boat), sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke Him up & said to Him, Teacher, don't You care if We drown? He got up & rebuked sternly the wind & said calmly to the resulting waves, Quiet! Be still! Then both the wind, the cause of the rucus, & it (the billow) were together immediately calm. He said to His disciples, Why are You so afraid? Do You still have no faith even after all you've seen? But yet They were terrified & asked each other, 'Who is this? Even the wind & the waves obey Him!'
  • Luke 8:22-25 1 day Jesus said to His disciples, Let's go over to the other side of the Lake. So They got into the boat & set out. As They sailed, He fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, & They were in great danger. The disciples went & woke Him, saying, Master, Master, We're going to drown. He got up & rebuked the winds & the raging waters; the storm subsided, & all was calm. Where is Your faith? He asked His disciples. In fear & amazement They asked 1 another, 'Who is this? He commands even the winds & the water, & they obey Him.
