Prior to Jesus' ministry-- John the Baptist baptizes Jesus Per Matt Matt 3:13-17 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter wHim, saying, I need to be baptized by You, & do You come to Me? Jesus replied, Let it be so now; it is proper for both of Us to do this now to fulfill all righteousness.  Their own cultivated olive tree was not cut down, but the natural branches were broken off (replaced by branches from a wild olive tree-- said branches having been grafted in). The natural branches can be readily re-grafted [see Roma 11:17-24 (esp'ly vv. 23-24)]. Then John consented. As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water. Having been baptized, at that moment, while leaving the water, Heaven was opened, & He saw [John witnessed] the Spirit of GOD descending like a dove & lighting on Him-- John got to see the start of the fulfillment of righteousness! And A voice from Heaven said, This is MY Son whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.

Prior to Jesus' ministry-- John the Baptist baptizes Jesus Per Mark Mark 1:9-11 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee & was baptized by John in the Jordan. As Jesus was coming up out of the water, He [John] saw Heaven being torn open & the Spirit descending on Him like a dove And a voice came out of Heaven: You are MY Beloved Son, whom I love; with You I am well pleased. At once the Spirit sent Him out in the desert 40 days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, & angels attended Him.

Prior to Jesus' ministry-- John the Baptist baptizes Jesus Per Luke Luke 3:21-22 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. As He was praying, Heaven was opened & the Holy Spirit descended on Him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from Heaven: You are MY Son, whom I love; with You I am well pleased.

Prior to Jesus' ministry-- John the Baptist implies that he baptized Jesus; later, on the other side of the Jordan, he testifies farther Per John John 1:29-34; 3:22-36 The next day after speaking to the priests & Levites of Jerusalem, & Pharisees of Bethany (see John 1:19,24,28): John saw Jesus coming towards Him & said to his disciples, Look, the Lamb of GOD, who takes away the sin of the world. This is the 1 I meant when I said, 'A man who comes after Me has already surpassed Me because He was before Me.' I myself did not know Him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that He might be revealed to Israel.' Then John gave this testimony: 'I saw the Spirit come down from Heaven as a dove & remain on Him. I would not have known Him, except the 1 who sent Me to baptize with water told Me, The 1 on whom You see the Spirit come down & remain is He who will baptize with the Holy Spirit. I have seen & I testify that this is the Son of GOD.' Later: After this [Nicodemus came to Jesus at night-- see PSALM 143 Nichodemus...], Jesus & His disciples went out into the Judean country, before he went to Galilee, where He spent some time with Them, & baptized. Now John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, & people were constantly coming to be baptized. (This was before John was put in prison-- see Matt 4:12.) An argument developed between some of John's disciples & a cartain Jew (or, certain Jews) over the matter of ceremonial washing. They came to John & said to Him, 'Rabbi, that man who was with You on the other side of the Jordan-- the 1 You testified about --well, He is baptizing, & evryone is going to Him.' To this John replied, "A man can receive only what 1 is given from Heaven-- speaking of the dove. You yourselves can testify that I said, 'I am not the Christ but am sent ahead of Him.' The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits & listens for Him & is full of joy when He hears the bridegrooms voice. That joy is Mine, & it is now complete. He must become greater-- baptizing with the Holy Spirit & fire, waiting for the bride to flourish; I must become less. The 1 who came from above is above all; the 1 who is from the earth belongs to the earth, & speaks as 1 from the earth. Repeat, the 1 who comes from Heaven is above all. He testifies to what He has seen & heard, but no 1 accept His testimony. The son of man who has accepted it has already certified that GOD is Truthful. For the 1 who GOD the FATHER has sent speaks the Words of GOD, for GOD gives the Spirit without limit. The FATHER loves the SON & has now placed everything in His hands. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not ever see life, for GOD'S Wrath remains on him.

Also prior to Jesus' ministry-- 2 of John's disciples follow Jesus John 1:35-51 The next day, still at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan (see John 1:28), John was there again with 2 of His disciples. When He saw Jesus passing by, He again said, 'Look, the Lamb of GOD!' When the 2 disciples heard Him say this, They followed Jesus that day. Turning around, Jesus saw Them following & asked, What do You want? They said, Rabbi (which means Teacher), where are You staying? Come, He replied, & You will see. So They went & saw where He was staying, & spent that day with Him. It was about the 10th hour. Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was 1 of the 2 who heard what John had said & who had followed Jesus. The 1st thing Andrew did was to find His brother Simon & tell Him, 'We have found the Nessiah' (that is, the Christ). And He brought Him to Jesus. Jesus looked at Him & said, You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas (which when translated is Peter-- or Rock). The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, He said to Him, Follow Me. Philip, like Andrew & Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. Philip found Nathanael & told Him, 'We have found the 1 Moses wrote about in the Law, & about  whom the prophets also wrote-- Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.' 'Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?' Nathanael asked. 'Come & see,' said Philip. When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, He said of Him, Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false. How do You know Me?, Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, I saw You while You were still under the fig tree before Philip called You. Then Nathanael declared, Rabbi, You are the Son of GOD; You are the king of Israel. Jesus said, You believe because I told You I saw You under the fig tree. You shall see greater things than that. He then added, I tell You the truth, You shall see Heaven open, & the Angels of GOD ascending & descending on the son of man. The 2 brothers, John's disciples, that had followed Jesus for 1 day on the other side of the Jordan later also became disciples of Jesus at the Sea of Galilee.

More prior to Jesus' ministry-- Jesus tempted Per Matt Matt 4:1-11 Texted in green are 4 quotes from the O.T. (Deu 8:3; Psa 91:11-12; Deu 6:16,13)-- but note that 1 was quoted by the devil (used out-of-"context"): Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. Later we shall see that Jesus instructed us how to fashion our prayers; 1 thing he told us to do was to beseech God to lead us not into temptation. Jesus learned obedience by the things which He suffered; such knowledge is freely passed on to us, if-so-be we request & receive it. We do not need to learn-the-hard-way (& there's no guarantee we'll pass the test). After fasting 40 days & 40 nights, He was aware of being hungry-- he was likely so focused before that he wasn't even aware of it. Who knows how many temptations there were before the end of the 40 days & nights (see Luke 4:2)-- but just when he thought the test was over: The tempter came to Him & said, If You are the Son of GOD, tell these stones to become bread. This is supposedly the 1st of the "3 types" of temptations Jesus dealt with during those 40 days-n-nights, but these unique temptations occurred when Jesus thought, "Ah, finally it is finished." When he least suspected it (& just the way we should if-in-fact we become disconnected & are led into temptation). Jesus answered with scripture, the offensive sword of the Spirit-- the answer to David's prayer in the psalm above (end), It is written: Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the Mouth of GOD. Then the devil took Him to the Holy City [Jerusalem, the Dwelling-- see PSALM 132 Psa] & had Him stand on the highest point of the Temple. If You are the Son of GOD, he said, throw yourself down. For it is written: HE will command HIS Angels concerning You, & they will lift You up in their hands, so that You will not even strike Your foot against a stone. Jesus answered him, It is also written: Do not put the LORD Your GOD to the test. It was mentioned at the start that the devil used this scripture out-of-"context"; the simple fact is that it was out of "context" because Satan used it-- because it was pointed out in PSALM 78 Psa that God instructed us to test him concerning the tithe. Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain-- as to the Place (see the PSALM 132 Psa) & showed Him all the kingdoms of the world & their splendor. All this I will give You, he said, if You will bow down & worship me. Jesus said to him, Away from Me Satan! For it is written: Worship the LORD Your GOD, & serve HIM only. Then the devil left Him, & angels came & attended Him.

More prior to Jesus' ministry-- Jesus tempted Per Mark Mark 1:12-13 Having just been baptized: At once the Spirit sent Him out into the desert, & He was in the desert 40 days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, & angels attended Him.

More prior to Jesus' ministry-- Jesus tempted Per Luke Luke 4:1-13 Similar to the Matt account above: texted in green are 4 quotes from the O.T. (Deu 8:3; Psa 91:11-12; Deu 6:13,16). The minor difference is that the order of the temptations are switched. I.e., both accounts have the temptation about the bread taking place 1st, but the Matt account has the 2nd temptation taking place at the Dwelling, & the 3rd at the Place-- in this account the 2 are switched. But emphatically, this is minor; too many people (& denominations) major-in-minors, as I again realized when I pointed out that per 1 account Jesus rode 2 donkeys into Jerusalem (see PSALM 10): Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, having just been baptized, returned from the Jordan & was led by the Spirit into the desert, where turned loose for 40 days He was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, & at the end of them He was hungry. The devil said to Him, If You are the Son of GOD, tell this stone to become bread. Jesus answered, It is written: Man does not live by bread alone. The devil led Him up to a high place (see PSALM 132 Psa) & showed Him in an instant, trying to dazzle & confuse him, all the kingdoms of the world. And he said to Him, I will give You all their authority & splendor, for it has been given to me, & I can give it to anyone I want to. So if You will worship me, it will all be Yours. Jesus answered, It is written: Worship the LORD Your GOD & serve HIM only. The devil led Him to Jerusalem & had Him stand on the highest point of God's Dwelling, the Temple, If You are the Son of GOD, he said, throw yourself down. For it is written: HE will command HIS Angels concerning You, & they will lift You up in their hands, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone. This last quote (Psa 91:11-12) is preceded (v. 9) by, If You make the MOST HIGH Your Dwelling. As we saw in PSALM 132 Psa, in the O.T. God's Place was Zion & his Dwelling was the Temple of Jerusalem; but in the N.T., God & Jesus were ONE-- HE is in Me, & I am in HIM. Note also that the devil quoted Scripture, likely thinking to go on the offensive. But Jesus answered [rebutted] him with scripture-in-context, It is also written: Do not put the LORD Your GOD to the test. When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left Him until an opportune time. Think not that having overcome 1x or 2x magnificently, that there will never again be an opportune time.
