List XV (Hebr), in C. below

A. Ref. shrinking (drawing) back

  • It is quite the opposite of agonize or war the good agony or warfare as revealed in XI (1stTim) A.;
  • Here we have quite the opposite of those strong advisements for new & maturing Christians to 1st agonize the agony of resisting temptation, then to wage the warfare of ministry (thereby laying up treasure in Heaven); i.e., they were used there to define clearly the difference between babes in Christ & overcoming Christians;
  • Now we have Hebr 10:38-39 speaking of how, by withdrawing from belief, 1 paints himself as a pretense-Christian;
  • V. 38 uses the Gr. word hu-poh-STEHL-lo; v. 39 uses the Gr. word hu-poh-STOH-la; these are very similar words-- the 1 in v. 39 is just the participle-form (drawing instead of draw);
  • Hebr 10:38a begins by referring to an O.T. prophecy that the righteous will live by his faith; Hebr 10:38b continues, And if He shrinks back (withdraws), I will not be pleased with Him; Hebr 10:39 goes on to say, But we overcomers are not of those who shrink back & are destroyed, but of those who truly believe & are saved.
  • BTW, it's been said that virtually all churches are loosing memberships-- most of that is the result of pretend-Christians withdrawing.

B-1. Comparison #1, the old will/covenant vs. the new will/covenant

  1. The Gr. for covenant/will is listed below in C.15; the scriptures are:
    • Hebr 7:22 has Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.
    • Hebr 8:6-12 has But the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to Theirs as the covenant of which HE now is mediator is superior to the old 1, & it is founded on better promises. For if there had been nothing wrong with that 1st covenantFrown, no place would have been sought for another. But GOD found fault with the people & said: The time is coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel & with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with Their forefathers when I took Them by the hand to lead Them out of Egypt, because They did not remain faithful to MY original Covenant through Abraham, & I turned away from Them, declares the LORD. This is the covenant I will make with the entire united House of Israel after that time, declares the LORD. I will put MY Laws in Their minds & write them on Their hearts. I will be Their GOD, & They will be MY People. No longer will a man teach His neighbor, or a man His brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' For They will all know ME, from the least of Them to the greatest. For I will remember Their sins no more.
    • Hebr 9:4 has Behind the 2nd curtain was a room called the Most Holy Holy Place, which had the golden altar of incense & the gold-covered ark of the covenant. This ark contained the gold jar of the manna, Aaron's staff that had budded, & the stone tablets of the covenant.
    • Hebr 9:11-17 has When Christ came as High Priest of the good things that are already here, He went through the greater & more perfect tabernacle that is not man-made, that is to say, not a part of this creation. He did not enter by the blood of goats & calves; but He entered the Most Holy Holy Place once for all by His own blood, having obtained eternal redemption. The blood of goats & bulls & the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on Those who are ceremonially unclean sanctifyThem so that They are outwardly clean. How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to GOD, cleanse Our consciences from acts that lead (the Greek word here is in the future tense-- shall purify; which speaks of the matter of confessing present sin) to death, so that We may serve the Living GOD! For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that Those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance-- now that He has died as a ransom to set Them free from the sins committed under the 1st covenant. In the case of a will, it is necessary to prove the death of the 1 who made it, because a will is in force only when someone has died; it never takes effect while the 1 who made it is living.
    • Hebr 12:22-24 has But you haven't come to that mountain; You have come:
      • to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, to the city of the Living GOD.
      • to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in Heaven.
      • to GOD, the judge of all men, to the spirits of righteous men made perfect, to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, & to the sprinkling blood of Jesus, that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
    • Hebr 13:20-21 has May the GOD of Peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back Our LORD Jesus Christ, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip You with everything good for doing HIS Will; & may HE work in Us what is pleasing to HIM, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever & ever. Amen.
                                                                        • The Gr. for will is listed below in C.24.; the scriptures are:
                                                                          • Hebr 18:5-10 has Therefore, when Christ came into the world, He said, Sacrifice & offering YOU did not desire, but a body YOU prepared for Me; with burnt offerings & sin offerings YOU were not pleased. Then I said, 'Here I am-- just as it is written about Me in the scroll-- I have come to do YOUR Will, O GOD (Psa 40:6-8a). First He said, Sacrifices & offerings, burnt offerings & sin offerings YOU did not desire, nor were YOU pleased with them. Then He said, Here I am, I have come to do YOUR Will. He sets aside the 1st will to establish the 2nd will. And by that will, We have been made holy through the bloody sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
                                                                          • Hebr 10:36 has You need to persevere so that when You have done the Will of GOD, You will receive what HE has promised.
Amen.
                                                                        • Regarding the past & present:
                                                                          • past: In O.T. times, the High Priest entered the Most Holy Holy Place 1x a year with the blood of bulls (calves) & goats-- followed (or preceded) by various sprinklings;
                                                                          • also past: upon crucifixion, He entered the Most Holy Holy Place once for all by His own sacrificial blood, having already obtained eternal redemption-- thereby achieving the impossible for us (for as we saw. the greater & more perfect tabernacle was not man-made, i.e., not a part of this creation);
                                                                          • but present: that's where once for all comes in-- the crucifixion occured ~2000 yrs. ago, but via the newly created tabernacle, today Jesus replaces our sin-compromised blood with His sacrificial blood;
                                                                          • also present: If we confess our sins, He is faithful & just to forgive us our sins, & to cleanse us from all unrighteousness-- restoring us so that again we might serve Him;
                                                                          • which brings up another matter: as my pastor recently pointed out, He is not expecting us to re-pay Him for services done (for that is an impossible amount)-- rather He is expecting us to aspire to be & say & do everything godly so much as lies in you.

                                                                        B-2.  Comparison #2, the simple Priest vs. the High Priest

                                                                        1. In order to more fully distinguish the Priest from the High Priest, I've called them simple Priest & High Priest. I used to think that Jesus became only a High Priest forever in the order of Melchicedek (as opposed to the "order of Aaron" mentioned in Hebr 7:11); I discovered He became both simple Priest forever in the order of Melchicedek & also High Priest forever in the order of Melchicedek. Because unigue Greek words are used for simple Priest & for High Priest.
                                                                        2. Hebr 5:6 & 7:17 say "Jesus became a simple Priest forever in the order of Melchicedek"; Hebr 5:10 says "He became a High Priest forever in the order of Melchicedek."
                                                                        3. Hebr 9:28 says "Christ was sacrificed 1x to take away the sins of many people; HE will appear the 2nd time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for HIM"-- which sheds light on the idea of the "promise of salvation" ("being saved").
                                                                        4. That speaks of HIS being High Priest-- what of simple Priest? Hebr 3:6 has "Christ is faithful as a Son over GOD's House. And We are HIS House, if We hold on to Our courage & the hope of which We boast;" Hebr 10:21-25 has "since We have a great simple Priest{CoolXV 28.} over the earthly House of GOD as well as the High Priest in Heaven, let Us always draw near to GOD in full assurance of faith having Our hearts sprinkled to cleanse Us from a guilty conscience & having Our bodies washed with pure water. Let Us hold unswervingly to the hope We profess, for HE who promised is faithful. And let Us consider how We may spur 1 another on toward love & good deeds. Let Us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let Us encourage 1 another-- & all the more as You see the Day approaching."

                                                                        C. Now lets look at the numbered words as in the other Gr. pages

                                                                        Each numbered entry of this list may have only 1 underlined word or several words underlined together; the underlined word(s) are followed by the single Greek word it is/they are rendered from.

                                                                        But a numbered entry may have 2 or more words underlined separately; these separate underlined words are followed by the Greek words they are rendered from.

                                                                        However, looking at the entire list, all the single Greek words, along with only the 1st word if there are multiple Greek words, are in Greek alphabetical order.

                                                                        ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

                                                                        1. sanctify/sanctified, make(s)/made holy from Hebr 2:11(2x); 9:13; 10:10,14,29; 13:12 > hah-gih-AH-zo;
