Some Greek Words in 1st Timothy
List XI (1stTim), in B. below
A. 1st let's look at 2 sets of Greek words (2 words in each set), found in 1stTim 6:12 & 1stTim 1:18. In the English (NIV) both the sets are rendered fight the good fight-- but from the contexts of the 2 scriptures, it is evident they are addressing 2 completely different matters.
- The scripture that 1stTim 6:12 pertains to is the relatively mild matter of new Christians resisting personal temptations as they are maturing (more difficult depending on past lifestyles); the better rendition would be agonize the good agony: the Gr. words are ah-go-NIH-zoh-mah-ih ah-GON;
- The scripture that 1stTim 1:18 pertains to is the more severe matter of older (but still maturing) Christians struggling as they minister (less difficult if there is agreement among fellow ministers; more difficult depending on the culture faced); the better rendition would be war the good warfare: the Gr. words are strah-TU-oh-mah-ih strah-TI-ah;
But a numbered entry may have 2 or more words underlined separately; these separate underlined words are followed by the Greek words they are rendered from.
However, looking at the entire list, all the single Greek words, along with only the 1st word if there are multiple Greek words, are in Greek alphabetical order.
