Psalm 12 A psalm for the director of music (chief musician); sheminith (an octave lower); see PART II H.3.3rd pt. (ref. sheminith). Said to: address being alone, confused & insecure; deal with lies & poverty:

Help, LORD, for the godly are no more; the faithful have vanished from among men. Everyone lies to his neighbor; their flattering lips speak with deception. May the LORD cut off all flattering lips & every boastful tongue that says, 'We will triumph with our tongues; we own our lips (our lips are plowshares)-- who is our master?'

Because of the oppression of the weak & the groaning of the needy, I will now arise, says the LORD, I will protect them from those who malign (trap) them.

And the Words of the LORD are flawless, like silver refined in clay, purified 7 times. O LORD, YOU will keep Us safe & protect Us from such people forever. The wicked freely strut about when what is vile is honored among men.

1. David a prophet Per Acts David has no book that he authored-- if he had, it may/may not have been placed among the major/minor prophetic books. For it's not even recorded 1x in the O.T. that he was a prophet, but we shall see below that it was specified so in Acts. Actually, it's pretty obvious as you read through the 76 psalms he wrote (listed in PerspectivesB B.1.b.). Of the 12 psalms we've seen thus far, David authored Psa 2 - 9; 11 - 12, but the best example thus far of David leaping into prophecy was Psa 2, where we saw: Distant & Far Distant prophecies Ask of ME, & I will make the nations Your distant inheritance, the ends of the earth YOUR far distant Possession. YOU will rule them with an iron scepter (break them with a rod of iron); YOU will dash them to pieces like pottery. EOP Covered beginning in PART II E. were the matters of prophets & seers; seers were assigned by kings to prophecy specifically for the kings-- that was their office. David's seer was Gad (2ndSa 24:11; 1stCh 21:9; 2ndCh 29:25). BTW, the Bible we have, as large as it is, is not the full record; 1stCh 29:29 says As for the events of King David's reign, from the beginning to the end, they are written in the records of Samuel the seer, the records of Nathan the prophet & the records of Gad the seer, together with the details of his reign & power, & the circumstances that surrounded him & Israel & the kingdoms of the other lands.

But we have in Acts 2:25-30, sev. verses of Peter quoting Psa 16:8-11 (all texted in grape, but the underlined portion is also from Acts 13:35). Peter quoting David, who was prophesying of Jesus (as if He were Jesus) yet up-there, then descended (incarnate), & then ascended: I saw the LORD always before ME/Me/ME. Because HE is always at MY/My/MY Right Hand, I will not on earth be shaken. Therefore My heart is glad & My tongue rejoices; My body also will live in hope, because YOU will not abandon Me to the grave, nor will YOU let YOUR Holy One see decay. YOU have already (when YOU begat ME) made known to ME the paths of life; YOU will always fill ME/Me/ME with joy in YOUR Presence. Peter now just speaking, 'Brothers, I can tell You confidently that the patriarch David died & was buried, & His tomb is here to this day. But He was a prophet & knew that GOD had promised that HE would place 1 of His descendants on HIS Throne-- HE placed his own son Solomon on David's throne, but recall that Jesus was a descendant of David 28 generations after David (see Matt 1:6-17).'

Psalm 13 A psalm for the director of music. Said to address being alone, distressed, impatient, sad & tired/weak:

How long, O LORD? Will YOU forget Me forever? How long will YOU hide YOUR Face from Me? How long must I wrestle with My thoughts & every day have sorrow in My heart? How long will My enemy triumph over Me? Look on Me & answer, O LORD My GOD . Give light to My eyes, or I will sleep in death; My enemy will say, 'I have overcome Him', & My foes will rejoice when I fall. But I trust in YOUR Unfailing Love; My heart rejoices in YOUR timely (not eternal) Salvation.

I will sing to the LORD, for HE has been good to Me.

1. Samaria The nation of Israel split into 2 kingdoms in 930 B.C.-- the northern Kingdom of Israel (10 tribes) & the southern Kingdom of Judah (2 tribes). The capital of the Judah was yet Jerusalem, but the land that composed the northern Kingdom became known as (the land of) Samaria-- over the years (through the reigns of the 20 kings) it had 3 capitals. 1stKi 12:25; 15:33; 16:8,15 has: the 1st 2 kings reigned in Shechem; the next 4 reigned in Tirzah. 1stKi 16:23-24 has: the 7th king (Omri) reigned 6 yrs. in Tirzah, & 6 yrs. in (the city of) Samaria. 1stKi 16:29; 22:51; 2ndKi 3:1; 10:26; 13:1,10; 14:23; 15:8,13,17,23,27; 17:1 has: the remaining 13 kings all reigned in (the city of) Samaria. 2ndKi 17:23-24 says that upon the northern Kingdom's capture by Assyria, Israelites were taken to Assyria & replaced by Assyrians-- hence the popular saying, "the 10 lost tribes of Israel". However, it seems that not all Israelites were removed (or else later returned), because as we shall see in PSALM 141 - 144 Psalm 143 2. Woman #8 used-of-God the Samaritan woman spoke of her ancestors & Jacob's well.

Psalm 14 For the director of music. Said to: address being proud & purposeless; deal with atheists & heretics; provide justice & vindication. See Psalms 51 - 59 Psalm 53 (intro.). Texted in grape are the passages (vv. 2b-3) that are quoted in the N.T. (see below, Psalm 15  2. N.T. Quotes from Psalms A.):

The fool (morally deficient one) says in his heart, 'There is no GOD.' They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good. The LORD looks down from Heaven on the sons of men to see if there are any who understand, any who seek GOD. All have turned aside, they have together become corrupt (stinking-- worthless, per Roma 3:12a); there is no one who does good, not even 1.

Will evildoers even learn-- those who devour MY People as men eat bread & who do not call on the LORD? There they are, overwhelmed with dread, for GOD is present in the company of the righteous. You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor, but the LORD is Their refuge. Oh, that eternal salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! When the LORD restores the fortunes of HIS People, let Jacob rejoice & Israel be glad! I.e., not a prophecy, but "I know it'll happen somehow."

Psalm 15 A psalm. Said to: deal with slander/insults; provide godliness, guidance & money:

LORD, who may dwell in YOUR Sanctuary? Who may live on YOUR Holy Hill?

He whose walk is blameless & who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from His heart & has no slander on His tongue, who does His neighbor no wrong & casts (receives-- believes/assumes true) no slur (reproach-- accusation) on/about His fellow man, who despises a vile man but honors Those who fear the LORD, who keeps His oath even when it hurts, who lends His money without usury & does not accept a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things will never be shaken.

1. Prayer & fasting

In the KJV there are 31 scriptures in which fast/fasting occurs by itself: 21x the Greek word is nae-STOO-oe (a verb); 10x the Greek word is either nae-STIE-ah or nae-stihs (nouns). However, only 8x do prayer & fasting occur together-- according to the KJV. These are: 4 in the Gospels: 1 in Matt, 1 in Mark & 2 in Luke; also: 3 in Acts, 1 in 1stCor.

The KJV is drawn from 7 ancient manuscripts. The other versions of the Bible are taken from various numbers of these manuscripts. Often this is not a problem; in the case of tying fasting & prayer together, though, it is. The 8 listed above reduces to 4 when it is seen that 4x the manuscripts disagree-- fasting is omitted or doubtful in them. Interesting is that in all 4 of the scriptures where there is agreement (2 in Luke, 2 in Acts), the author is Luke, a Greek/Gentile physician. These 4 accounts are:

  • Luke 2:36-38 There was also a prophetess, Anna, of the tribe of Asher; a widow until She was age 84 (for 84 yrs.). She never left the temple but worshipped night & day, fasting & praying. She spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.
  • Luke 5:33-34 They said to Him, John's disciples often fast & pray, & so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but Yours go on eating & drinking. Jesus answered, Can you make the guests of the bridegroom fast while He is with Them? But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from Them; in those days They will fast. This mean we are to fast now, after the crucifixion, resurrection & ascension.
  • Acts 13:1-3 In the church at Antioch (in Pisidia, Asia) there were prophets & teachers; while They were worshiping & fasting, the Holy Spirit said, Set apart for Me Barnabas (Herod's foster brother) & Saul (destroyer-- Paul means worker). So after They had fasted & prayed, They placed Their hands on Them & sent Them off. Recall, ref. Paul & Herod's foster brother (Barnabas), David & Saul's son (Jonathan).
  • Acts 14:23 In 3 Asian churches, at Lystra & Iconium (both in Lycaonia), and Antioch (in Pisidia)-- see v. 21: Paul & Barnabas appointed elders (ordained elders; had elders elected) for Them in each church &, with prayer & fasting, committed Them to the LORD.

Psalm 16 A miktam (golden psalm); Said to provide fellowship, friendship with God, hope, joy, money, protection & wisdom. Texted in grape are the passages (vv. 8-11) that are quoted in the N.T. (see above, Psalm 15 2. N.T. Quotes from Psalms A.):

Keep Me safe, O GOD, for in YOU I take refuge. I said to the LORD, YOU are My LORD; apart from YOU I have no good thing. As for the saints who are in the land, They are the glorious ones in whom is all My delight [& also the noble ones (priests) in whom all delight]. The sorrows of those will increase who run after other gods. I will not pour out their libations of blood or take up their names on My lips. LORD, YOU have assigned Me My portion & My cup; YOU have made My lot secure.

The boundary lines have fallen for Me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. I will praise the LORD who counsels Me; even at night My heart instructs Me.

I have set the LORD always before Me. Because HE is at My right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore as I live My heart is glad & My tongue rejoices; My body also will rest secure, because Distant prophecy YOU will not abandon Me to the grave (Sheol), nor will YOU let YOUR Holy One see decay. YOU have made (will make) known to Me the path of life; (Hebr 5:8 says that Jesus learned obedience by the things He suffered) Far Distant prophecy YOU will fill ME with joy in YOUR Presence (Facing), with eternal pleasures at YOUR Right Hand. Psalm 17 A prayer; written when David was being persecuted by Saul. Said to: address being threatened & trapped; provide answers, hope, money, prayer & protection:

Hear, O LORD, My righteous plea (justice); listen to My cry. Give ear to My prayer-- it does not rise from deceitful lips. May My vindication come from YOU; may YOUR Eyes see what is right. Though YOU probe My heart & examine Me at night, though YOU test Me, YOU will find nothing; I have resolved that My heart will not sin. As for the deeds of men-- by the words of YOUR Lips I have kept myself from the ways of the violent. My steps have held to YOUR Paths; My feet have not slipped. I call on YOU, O GOD, for YOU will answer Me; give ear to Me & hear My prayer.

Show the wonder of YOUR Great Love, YOU who save by YOUR Right Hand those who take refuge in YOU from Their foes. Keep Me as the apple of YOUR Eye; hide Me in the shadow of YOUR Wings from the wicked who assail Me, from My mortal enemies who surround Me. They close up their callous hearts, & their mouths speak with arrogance. They have tracked Me down, they now surround Me, with eyes alert, to throw Me to the ground. They are like a lion hungry for prey, like a great lion crouching in cover. Rise up, O LORD, confront them (prevent their face), bring them down; rescue Me from the wicked by YOUR Sword. O LORD, by YOUR Hand save Me from such men, from men of this world whose reward is in this life.

YOU still the hunger of Those YOU cherish; Their sons have plenty, & They store up wealth for Their children. And I-- in righteousness I will see YOUR Face; when I awake I will be satisfied with seeing YOUR Likeness.

Psalm 18 A song for the director of music, which David the Servant of the LORD sang when He was delivered from His enemies & from Saul. Said to: address being tired/weak; deal with success; provide hope, knowledge & protection. Texted in grape is the passage (v. 49) that is quoted in the N.T. (see above, Psalm 15 2. N.T. Quotes from Psalms A.):

I love YOU, O LORD, My strength. After this 1st line there is very little difference from what is recorded in 2ndSa 22, called David's Song-- see PerspectivesC C.3.a.

The LORD is My rock (safety), My fortress & My deliverer; My GOD is My rock (protector), in whom I take refuge. HE is My shield & the horn (symbol of strength) of My salvation, My stronghold. I call to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, & I am saved from My enemies. The cords of death entangled Me; the torrents of destruction (Belial) overwhelmed Me. The cords of the grave (Sheol) coiled around Me; the snares of death confronted Me. In My distress I called to the LORD; I cried to My GOD for help. From HIS Temple HE heard My voice; My cry came before HIM, into HIS Ears. The earth trembled & quaked, & the foundations of the mountains shook; they trembled because HE was angry. Smoke rose from HIS Nostrils; consuming fire from HIS Mouth, burning coal blazed out of it. HE parted the heavens & came down; dark clouds were under HIS Feet. HE mounted the cherubim & flew; HE soared on the wings of the wind. HE made darkness HIS Covering, HIS Canopy around HIM-- the dark rain clouds of the sky. Out of the brightness of HIS Presence clouds advanced, with hailstones & bolts of lightening. The LORD thundered from Heaven; the Voice of the Most High GOD resounded. HE shot HIS Arrows & scattered the enemies, great bolts of lightening & routed them.

The valleys of the sea were exposed & the foundations of the earth laid bare at YOUR Rebuke, O LORD, at the blast from YOUR Nostrils. HE reached down from on high & took hold of Me; HE drew Me out of deep waters. HE rescued Me from My powerful enemy, from My foes, who were too strong for Me. They confronted Me in the day of My disaster, but the LORD was My support. HE brought Me out into a spacious place; HE rescued Me because HE delighted in Me. The LORD has dealt with Me according to My righteousness-- but the greatest reward would be according to the righteousness by Jesus; according to the cleanness of My hands HE has rewarded Me, for I have kept the Ways of the LORD; I have not done evil by turning from My GOD. All HIS Laws are before Me; I have not turned away from HIS Decrees. I have been blameless (this was before the Bathsheba incident) before (with) HIM & have kept myself from sin. The LORD has rewarded Me according to My righteousness, according to the cleanness of My hands in HIS Sight.

To the faithful YOU show yourself faithful, to the blameless YOU show yourself blameless, to the pure YOU show yourself pure, but to the crooked YOU show yourself shrewd (wrestle yourself crooked). YOU save the humble but bring low in YOUR Good Time those whose eyes are haughty. YOU, O LORD, keep My lamp burning; My GOD turns My darkness into light, with YOUR Help I can advance against a troop (run & break through a barricade); with My GOD I can scale a wall.

As for My GOD, HIS Way is perfect; the Word of the LORD is flawless (refined). HE is a shield for all who take refuge in HIM. For who is GOD besides the LORD? And who is the rock (protector) except Our GOD? It is GOD who arms Me with strength & makes My way perfect-- by O.T. standards. HE makes My feet like the feet of a deer; HE enables Me to stand on the heights. HE trains My hand for battle; My arms can bend like a bow of bronze.

YOU give Me YOUR Shield for victory, & YOUR Right Hand sustains Me; YOU stoop down to make Me great. YOU broaden the path beneath Me, so that My ankles do not turn-- YOU perform wonderful, detailed miracles. I pursued My enemies & overtook them; I did not turn back till they were destroyed. I crushed them so that they could not rise; they fell beneath My feet. YOU armed Me with strength for battle; YOU made My adversaries bow at My feet. YOU made My enemies turn their backs in flight, & I destroyed My foes. They cried for help, but there was none to save them-- even to the LORD, but HE did not answer. I beat them as fine as dust borne on the wind; I poured them out like mud in the streets.

YOU have delivered Me from the attacks of the people; YOU have made Me the head of nations; people I did not know are subject to Me. As soon as they hear Me, they obey Me; foreigners cringe before (feign obedience to) Me. They all lose heart; they come trembling from their strongholds. The LORD lives! Praise be to My rock (protector)! Exalted be GOD My Savior! HE is the GOD who avenges Me, who subdues nations under Me, who saves Me from My enemies. YOU exalted Me above My foes; from violent men YOU rescued Me. Therefore I will praise (confess) YOU among the nations (Gentiles, per Roma 15:9), O LORD; I will sing praises (hymns) to YOUR Name. HE gives HIS King great victories; HE shows HIS Unfailing Kindness to HIS Anointed, to David & His descendants forever.
