Psalms 141 - 144 (with 2 topics)
Psalm 141 A psalm; said to deal with temptation:
O LORD, I call to YOU; come quickly to Me. Hear My voice when I call to YOU. May My prayer be set before YOU like incense (as pleasing); may the lifting of My hands be like the evening sacrifice (get YOUR attention). Set a guard over My mouth so I don't even vocalize hatred, O LORD; keep watch over the door of My lips. Let not My heart be drawn to (me not give into temptation to do) what is evil, to take part in evil deeds with men who are evildoers; let Me not eat of their delicacies-- recall the luxuries of the end-time Babylon. Let only a righteous man strike (discipline) Me-- it is kindness; let Him rebuke Me --it is oil on My head. My head will not refuse it-- I will not repudiate. Yet My prayer, not hateful speech/actions, are ever against the deeds of evildoers; their rulers will be thrown down from the cliffs, & the wicked will learn that My peaceful words were well spoken. They will say, 'As 1 plows & breaks up the earth, so our bones have been scattered at the mouth of the grave (brink of Sheol). But My eyes are on YOU, O Sovereign LORD; in YOU I take refuge-- do not give Me over to death. Keep Me from the snares they have laid for Me, from the traps set by evildoers. Let the wicked fall into their own nets, while I pass by in safety.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Psalm 142 A maskil (giving of instructions); a prayer when David was in a cave. Said to: address being overwhelmed & trapped; deal with troubles:
I cry aloud to the LORD; I lift up My voice to the LORD for mercy. I pour out My complaint to HIM; before HIM I tell My trouble. Evidence? When My spirit grows faint within Me, it is YOU who know My way. In the path where I walk men have hidden a snare for Me. Look to My right & see; no 1 is concerned for Me. I have no refuge; no 1 cares for My life. I cry to YOU; I say, 'YOU are My refuge, My portion in the land of the living.' Listen to My cry, for I am in desperate need; rescue Me from those who pursue Me, for they are too strong for Me. Set Me free from My prison, that I may praise YOUR Name. Then the righteous will gather about Me, because of YOUR Goodness to Me.

Psalm 143 A psalm; said to address being depressed:
O LORD, hear My prayer, listen to My cry for mercy; in YOUR Faithfulness & Righteousness come to My relief. Do not bring YOUR Servant into judgment, for no 1 living is righteous before YOU. The enemy pursues Me, he crashes Me to the ground; he makes Me dwell in darkness like those long dead. So My spirit grows faint within Me; My heart within Me is dismayed. I remember the days of long ago; I meditate on all YOUR Works & consider what YOUR Hands have done. I spread out My hands to YOU; My soul thirsts for YOU like a parched land. Selah Answer Me quickly, O LORD; My spirit fails. Do not hide YOUR Face from Me or I will be like those who go down to the pit. Let the morning bring word of YOUR Unfailing Love, for I have put My trust in YOU. Show Me the way I should go, for to YOU I lift up My soul. Rescue Me from My enemies, O LORD, for I hide myself in YOU. Teach Me to do YOUR Will, for YOU are My GOD; may YOUR Good Spirit lead Me on level ground. For YOUR Name's sake, O LORD, preserve My life; in YOUR Righteousness, bring Me out of trouble. In YOUR Unfailing Love, silence My enemies; destroy all My foes, for I am YOUR Servant.
1. Nicodemus the teacher was taught about ABCing John 3:1-21 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night & said, Rabbi, We (some of us) know You are a teacher who has come from GOD-- later Jesus calls him Israel's teacher (not from God). For no one could perform the miraculous signs You are doing if GOD were not with Him. In reply Jesus declared, I tell You the truth, no 1 can see GOD unless he is born again (from above-- not just automatically immersed as a 12-yr.-old). How can a man be born when he is old?, Nicodemus asked. Surely he cannot enter a 2nd time into his mother's womb to be born! Jesus answered-- perhaps His 1st parable, In general, I tell You the truth, no 1 can enter the Kingdom of GOD unless he is born of water & the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. Personally, You should not be surprised at My saying, 'You must be born again.' The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but You cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit. How can this be (Would you stop speaking pig-Latin)?, Nicodemus asked. Answering a question with a question: You are Israel' teacher, said Jesus, & You do not understand (admit) these things? Maybe you'll connect-the-dots this way: Generally, I tell You the truth, WE (My father & I) speak of what WE know, & WE testify of what WE have seen with our own eyes, but still you people do not accept (ABC-- admit, believe & confess; see CommentsOLD In General) OUR testimony. Personally, I have spoken to You of earthly things & You do not understand, let alone believe; how then will You understand & believe if I speak if I speak of heavenly things? No 1 has ever gone into Heaven except the 1 who came from Heaven-- the Son of man. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in Him may proceed to confess & have eternal life. For GOD so loved the world that HE gave HIS One & only SON, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For GOD did not send HIS SON into the world to condemn the work, but to save the world through Him. Whosoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the Name of GOD'S 1 & only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but man loved darkness instead because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, & will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through GOD.
A. Part 1 (vv. 1-26) This 1st part only covers Jesus' discussion with the Samaritan woman (Samaria was described in Psalms 12 - 18 Psalm 13 1. Samaria): The Pharisees heard that Jesus was gaining & baptizing more disciples than John, although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized now-- earlier He did, as we saw in Psalms 7 - 11 Psalm 10 5. Jesus baptized..., but His disciples. When the Lord learned of this, He left Judea & went back 1x more to Galilee. Now He had to go through Samaria. So He came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to His son Joseph-- Gen 48:22 refers to the ridge of land Jacob had conquered; Gen 33:19 & Jos 24:32 refer to a plot of land that Jacob had bought (where He pitched His tent & built an altar). Jacob's well was there-- here & v. 12 are the only references in the Bible to Jacob's well; Abraham & Isaac had dug & named several wells (Gen 26); it was Jacob who was renamed Israel (Gen 32:28; 35:10), & Jesus, tired as He was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the 6th hour. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, Will you gave Me a drink? (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to Him, You are a Jew & I am a Samaritan woman. How can You ask me for a drink? (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans). Jesus answered her, If you knew the Gift of GOD & who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him & He would have given you living water. Sir, the woman said, You have nothing to draw with & the well is deep. So, where can You get this living water? Are You greater than our father Jacob-- note that earlier she said she was not a Jew, who gave us the well & drank from it himself, as did also His sons & His flocks & herds? Above was mentioned the plot of ground bought, where He pitched His tent & set up an altar. This was the end of the account of his return from Paddan Aram, where he had acquired wife Rachel, etc. Gen 33:16-20 says he separated himself from Esau & went to Succoth, where He built a place for himself & made shelters for his livestock-- after which He arrived safely at the city of Shechem in Canaan & camped within sight of the city (& bought the plot of ground mentioned). Jesus answered, Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whosoever drinks the water I give Him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give Him will become a spring of water welling up (continuing through) to eternal life. The woman said to Him, Sir, give me this water so that I won't have to keep coming here to draw water. He introduced spirituality this way: He told her, Go, call your husband & come back. I have no husband, she replied. Jesus said to her, You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had 5 husbands, & the man you have now is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true-- implying what she had said before was not. Sir, the woman said, I can see that You are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem. Jesus declared, Believe Me, woman, a time is coming when You will worship the FATHER neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not (think you) know; We worship what We do know, for salvation is from (has been for) the Jews. Yet guess what: a new time is coming & yea has come when the true worshipers (bonafide believers) will worship the FATHER in spirit & truth, for They are the kind of worshipers the FATHER seeks. GOD is Spirit, & HIS worshipers will worship in spirit & in truth-- not in pilgrimage, but consistently in fellowship from the heart. The woman said, I & some of us know & believe that Messiah (called Christ) is coming. When He comes, He will explain everything to us. Then Jesus declared, I who speak to you am He.
B. Part 2 (vv. 27-38) This part covers Jesus' teaching to His disciples about the hard sowing & the easy reaping. We saw in Psalms 110 - 113 Psalm 110 2. Contrast #9 B. about the sowing & reaping-- this is repeated here, but 1st we see the context, that Jesus spoke to His disciples after talking to the Samaritan women: Just then His disciples returned, & were surprised to find Him talking with a (any) woman. But no 1 asked, 'What do You want?' or 'Why are You talking with her?' Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town & said to the people, 'Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ (Messiah) . They came out of the town & made their way toward Him. Meanwhile His disciples urged Him, Rabbi, eat something. But He said to Them, I have food to eat that You know nothing about. Then His disciples said to each other, 'Could someone have brought Him food?' My food, said Jesus, is to do the will of HIM who sent Me & to finish HIS Work. Do You not say, '4 more months & then the harvest'? I tell You, open Your eyes & look at the fields! There is no delay. They are ripe for harvest. Even now the reaper draws His wages, even now He harvests the crop for eternal life, so that the sower & the reaper may be glad & fellowship together. Thus the saying '1 sows & another reaps' is true. I sent You to reap what You have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, & You have reaped the benefits of their labor.
C. Part 3 (vv. 39-42) Finally we see how God used the Samaritan woman in Sychar of Samaria! Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in Him because of the woman's testimony, 'He told everything I ever did.' So when the Samaritans came to Him, they urged Him to stay with them, & He stayed 2 days. And because of His words many more became believers. They said to the woman, 'We no longer believe just because of what You said; now We have heard for ourselves, & We know that this man really is the savior of the world.'

Psalm 144 This psalm, though authored by David, is reminiscent of the proverbs of Solomon (see PerspectivesA A.1.c. HISTORY BOOKS (5th pt.), in that it reflects the narrow perspective that God is favorative. However, there is a huge difference-- this is not an entire book! Also, the bulk of this is prayer, & as was recently pointed out, there is a vast difference between "hating your enemies" in prayer & hating them in speech/action:
Praise be to the LORD, My rock, who trains My hands for war, My fingers for battle. HE is My Loving GOD & My fortress, My stronghold & My deliverer, My shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues my people under Me. O LORD, what is man, that YOU care for him, the son of man that YOU think of him? Man is like a breath; his days are a fleeting shadow. Part YOUR Heavens, O LORD, & come down; touch the mountains so that they smoke, send forth the lightning & scatter the enemies, shoot YOUR Arrows & rout them. Reach down YOUR Hand from on high; deliver Me & rescue Me from the mighty waters, from the hands of foreigners whose mouths are full of lies, whose right hands are deceitful. I will sing a new song to YOU, O GOD: on the 10-stringed lyre I will make music to YOU, to the ONE who gives victory to kings, who delivers HIS Servant David from the deadly sword. Mostly a repeat: Deliver Me & rescue Me from the hands of foreigners whose mouths are full of lies, whose right hands are deceitful. Then Our sons in their youth will be like well-nurtured plants, & Our daughters will be like (remain as) pillars carved to adorn a palace, Our barns will be filled with every kind of provision. Our sheep will increase by 1000s, by 10000s in Our fields; Our oxen will draw heavy loads. There will be no breaching of walls, no going into captivity, no cry of distress in Our streets. Blessed are the people of whom this is true; blessed are the people whose God is the LORD-- who circumcises their hearts.
