Psalm 127- Song #8 of the Songs of Ascents (also known as the Pilgrim Songs, the Songs of Degrees, etc.-- see PerspectivesB B.3. about the Songs of Ascents in gen'l.). Author Solomon; said to deal with success. The theme of this 8th of the 15 steps is the depth of the love of God:

  Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. In vain You rise early & stay up late, toiling for food to eat-- for HE grants sleep to (while They sleep HE provides for) those HE loves. Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children are a reward from HIM. Like the arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in 1's youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of Them. They will not be put to shame when They contend with their enemies in the gate.

  Considering all that the Israelites went through up to this point [a few: slavery in Egypt, the 40+ yrs. from Egypt to Canaan, the insistance that they be like other nations (with kings-- i.e., indirect guidance by God) & that Solomon (who perhaps knowingly was the result of the David & Bathsheba affair, followed by the arrangement for the death of Nathan) is said to have written this psalm]-- how can this be about God's love to Those HE loves? Well, it might be said that this was a living (stepped-pilgrimage) prophecy (& recall that it's said to deal with success) about For GOD so loved the entire world that HE sent HIS only begotten SON, that whosoever believes in Him/HIM should have everlasting life (KJV, John 3:16). Fulfillment: Solomon's later lifestyle (700 wives & 300 concubines), the kingdom division, etc. were not frustrations of what God had earlier declared (that the kingdom of David would endure for ever)-- for you see that Jesus' coming was the emphatic declaration of it continuing (spiritually) forever!

Psalm 128- Song #9 of the Songs of Ascents (also known as the Pilgrim Songs, the Songs of Degrees, etc.-- see PerspectivesB B.3. about the Songs of Ascents in gen'l.). Author anonymous-- some suggest Hezekiah; said to deal with success. The theme of this 9th of 15 steps is the blessings of God:

  Blessed are those who fear the LORD, who walk in HIS Ways. You will eat the fruit of Your labor; blessings & prosperity will be Yours. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within Your house; Your sons will be like olive shoots around Your table. Thus is the man blessed who fears the LORD. May the LORD bless You from Zion all the days of Your life; may You see the prosperity of Jerusalem, & may You live to see Your children's children. Peace be upon Israel-- same ending as Psalm 125.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Psalm 129- Song #10 of the Songs of Ascents (also known as the Pilgrim Songs, the Songs of Degrees, etc.-- see PerspectivesB B.3. about the Songs of Ascents in gen'l.). Author anonymous-- some suggest Hezekiah. The theme of this 10th of 15 steps is that going against Israel (not just God) is futile. Hezekiah speaking as for the nation of Israel:

  They have greatly oppressed me from my youth-- let Israel say (always claim) --they have greatly oppressed me from my youth, but they have not gained the victory over me. Plowmen have plowed my back & made their furrows long. But the LORD is Righteous; HE has cut me free from the cords of the wicked.

  • May all who hate Zion be turned back in shame.
  • May they be like grass on the roof, which withers even before it can grow; with it the reaper cannot at all fill his hands-- in the dispensation of time, the exiles returned (the sowers were frustrated), nor the 1 who gathers (sent to gather the scattered) fill his arms.
  • May those who pass by say, 'The blessing of the LORD be upon you; we bless you in the Name of the LORD-- i.e., those Christians who truly can bless you in the Name of the LORD.'

Psalm 130- Song #11 of the Songs of Ascents (also known as the Pilgrim Songs, the Songs of Degrees, etc.-- see PerspectivesB B.3. about the Songs of Ascents in gen'l.). Author anonymous-- some suggest Hezekiah; said to provide forgiveness. The theme of this 11th of 15 steps is seeking/acknowledging a national God:

  Out of the depths I cry to YOU, O LORD; O LORD, hear My voice. Let YOUR Ear be attentive to My cry for mercy. If YOU, O LORD, kept a record of sin, O LORD, who could stand? But with YOU there is forgiveness; therefore YOU are feared (respected).

  I wait for the LORD, My soul waits, & in HIS Word I put My hope. My soul waits for the LORD more than watchmen wait for the morning, much more than watchmen wait for the morning. O Israel, put your hope in the LORD, for with the LORD is unfailing love & with HIM is full redemption. HE himself will redeem Israel from all their sins according to HIS plan/time.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Psalm 131- Song #12 of the Songs of Ascents (also known as the Pilgrim Songs, the Songs of Degrees, etc.-- see PerspectivesB B.3. about the Songs of Ascents in gen'l.). The theme of this 12th step is seeking/acknowledging a personal God:

  My heart is not proud, O LORD, My eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things to wonderful for Me. But I have stilled & quieted My soul; like a weaned child with its mother, like a weaned child is My soul within Me. O fellow Israelites, put Your hope in the LORD, both now & forevermore.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Psalm 132- Song #13 of the Songs of Ascents (also known as the Pilgrim Songs, the Songs of Degrees, etc.-- see PerspectivesB B.3. about the Songs of Ascents in gen'l.). Author anonymous. The theme of this 13th of 15 steps is We're coming to where we know YOU are!:

  O LORD, remember David & all the hardships He endured. He swore an oath to the LORD & made a vow to the Mighty ONE of Jacob-- we saw in Psa 65:1 that David sang, Praise awaits YOU, O GOD, in Zion; to YOU Our vows will be fulfilled. In Gen 49:22,24 Jacob blessed Joseph: Joseph is a fruitful vine, because of the Hand of the Mighty ONE of Jacob; Isa 49:26 (repeated in Isa 60:16) has I, the LORD, am your (the nation's) Savior, your Redeemer, the Mighty ONE of Jacob: 'I will not enter My house or go to My bed-- I will allow no sleep to My eye, no slumber to My eyelids till I find (choose) a place for the LORD, & construct a dwelling for the Mighty ONE of Jacob.'

  Now no where else in scripture is it said that David made that oath to find a place, but he did vow to build a dwelling to the prophet Nathan. We heard it in Ephrathah, We came upon it in the fields of Jaar (of it in Ephrathah, We found it in Jaar-- Kiriath Jearim); 'Let Us go to HIS Dwelling Place; let Us worship at HIS Footstool-- arise, O LORD, & come to YOUR Resting Place, YOU & the Ark of YOUR Might. May YOUR Priests be clothed with righteousness; May YOUR Saints sing for joy.' For the sake of David YOUR Servant, do not reject YOUR Anointed One.

 Now, The LORD swore an oath to David, a sure oath that HE will not revoke. I.e., David may/may not have made an oath, but God certainly did. 1 of Your own descendants I will place on Your throne-- if Your sons keep MY Covenant & the statutes I teach Them, then Their sons will sit on Your throne for ever & ever. But as for the David's oath & vow (his will)-- he neither found the place nor constructed the dwelling: For the LORD has chosen Zion, HE has desired it for HIS Dwelling: This is MY Resting Place for ever & ever; here I will sit enthroned, for I have desired it-- I will bless her with abundant provisions; her poor will I satisfy with food. I will clothe her priests with salvation, & her saints will ever sing for joy. Here I will make a horn (strong 1-- king) grow for David & set up a lamp for MY Anointed One. Eventually I will clothe HIS enemies with shame, but the crown on HIS Head will be/remain resplendent.

2. Ancestry of Jesus Per Luke Luke 3:23-38 There is to be a major discrepancy with the Matthew account-- this perhaps contributes to why some devote themselves to myths & endless genealogies, as referred to in 1stTim 1:4). As we saw, the Matthew account begins with Abraham & proceeds through 3 lists (each with 14-"generations"). Whereas, this Luke account goes back to the creation & lists 21 generations before proceeding with Abraham. But the major discrepancy is that the Matthew account lists through Solomon son of David, whereas this Luke account lists through Nathan son of David. BTW, both Solomon & Nathan were sons of David & Bathsheba.

Now Jesus himself was about 30 yrs. old when He began His ministry. He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph-- He was the son of GOD & also the son of man-- specifically Joseph (& not Mary) was a descendant of David (see Luke 1:27). Nevertheless, He was spiritually the son of God & Mary (engaged to Joseph).

The 21 "generations" before Abraham

  1. 5 days of creation,
  2. on the 6th day of creation: (v. 37e) Adam, the son of GOD.

  4. (v. 37d) Enosh, the son of Seth,
  5. (v. 37c) Kenan, the son of Enosh,

  8. (v. 37b) Enoch, the son of Jared,

As we saw in PART II H.2.(2nd pt.) & 3.(2nd pt.), David reigned in Hebron over Judah 7.5 yrs. & 33 yrs. over all Israel (i.e., it stayed united for 2 reigns). Before/in Hebron David had 6 sons (by 6 wives); in Jerusalem he had 11 more children (by more concubines & wives). 1 of the wives was Bathsheba; whenever the 4 children of David & Bathsheba are listed, Nathan is always the 3rd & Solomon is always the 4th (see 2ndSa 5:4-5,13-14; 1stCh 3:1-5; 14:4).

Whether Jesus descended through Solomon or Nathan appears to indeed fuel those obsessed with endless genealogy (especially those who are so gender-specific)-- when 1 considers that Joseph genes had nada to do with Mary's conception. So why did God allow it to be placed in the Bible for us to take note of? Because, it was God's proclamation that David's kingdom (or throne) would never end? Mary was his wife-to-be; remember, the Lord works in mysterious ways! Then also, we have that Jesus as a child needed a stable home to be nurtured in-- remember how they had to flee to Egypt? Also, a question: would anyone else have declared not to marry Mary, & then have quickly changed his mind at God's advice?

3. On Top of ALL John 1:1-14

In the beginning was the WORD, & the WORD was with GOD, & the WORD was GOD. HE was with GOD in the beginning. As a person can be a child, a grandchild, a spouse, a parent, & a grandparent at the same time, so God was the trinity (father, son & Holy Spirit)-- but in Jesus time-on-earth (the incarnation) the father & Holy Spirit aspects stayed behind in Heaven, while the son (word/light) aspect descended to earth. This is a huge difference from what we can experience-- we inhabit a 3-dimensional world; we can go here, there & up/down there, but all aspects of being a child, grandchild, etc., remain together & go with us (perhaps as baggage). Whereas God's aspects separated; at the time of the incarnation the father aspect remained in Heaven while the son aspect descended (1st "appearing" in Mary's womb). Now-a-days, the son aspect is back in Heaven (seated at the Right Hand of Father-GOD)-- the Holy Spirit is here among/within us. But back to the beginning: Through HIM all things were made, without HIM nothing was made that has been made (exists). In HIM was life, & that life was the light of men-- how mankind is unique from the rest of creation. The light shines yet in the darkness, but the darkness, neither those part of the darkness, has not understood it. There came a man who was sent from God: His name was John the Baptist. He came as a witness to the testify concerning that light, so that through Him all men might believe in the light. He himself was not the light; He came only as a witness to the light-- the fact that a new aspect of the light was descending. Jesus the true light (Light) was coming into the world. He was in the world, & though the world was made by Him, the world did not recognize Him. He came to that which was His own, but His own did not receive Him. Yet all who received (were convinced to receive) Him, to Those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become Children of GOD-- children not born of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but reborn of GOD. The WORD became flesh & made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory as of the ONE & ONLY, who came from God the Father, absolutely full of grace & truth.
