Psalms 110 - 113 (with 5 topics)
Psalm 110 A psalm; texted in grape are the passages (vv. 1,4) that are quoted in the N.T. (see PSALM 12 - 18 Psalm 15 2. N.T. Quotes from Psalms B.):
Far Distant prophecy
- David commenting: The LORD (FATHER) says to My ascended LORD Jesus: Sit at MY Right Hand until I make YOUR Enemies a footstool for YOUR Feet-- quoted by Jesus in Matt 22:44; Mark 12:36; & Luke 20:42-43 (quoted by Peter in Acts 2:34-35). S.a. PSALM 1 - 6 Psalm 2 (vv. 7-9). 1stCor 15:26 says, The last enemy that shall be defeated is death.
- David speaking to Jesus: The LORD (YOUR FATHER) will extend YOUR Mighty Scepter from Zion; YOU will rule in the midst of YOUR Enemies. YOUR Troops will be willing on YOUR Day of Battle. Arrayed in holy majesty, from the womb of the dawn YOU will receive the dew of YOUR Youth. The LORD has sworn & will not HIS Mind; YOU are a High Priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek-- see Hebr 5:10.
- David speaking to God the father: The ascended LORD Jesus is at YOUR Right Hand; HE will crush kings on the Day of HIS Wrath. HE will judge the nations, heaping up the dead & crushing the rulers of the whole earth. HE will drink from a brook beside the way; therefore HE will lift up HIS Head. EOP
1. Contrast #8 What's under Our feet & HIS Feet? 1stCor 15:20-28 refers to both of these. 1st we see about under HIS Feet (vv. 20-26): But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep (died). For since death came through a man (Adam), the resurrection of the dead (those fallen asleep) comes also through a man (Jesus). For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all (many) will be made alive. But each in his own turn: Christ slain from the foundation of the world, then the firstfruits; then when HE comes, those who belong to HIM-- hence the word "many" in the last sentence. Then the end will come, when HE hands over the Kingdom to GOD the FATHER after HE has destroyed all wrongful dominion, authority & power. For HE (Jesus) must reign until HE (the FATHER) has put all HIS (Jesus') Enemies under HIS Feet-- recall what Father-GOD said (above) in Psa 110:1. The LORD (FATHER) says to My ascended LORD Jesus: Sit at MY Right Hand until I make YOUR Enemies a footstool for YOUR Feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. Now v. 27 refers to (quotes) Psa 8:6. For HE has put (created) everything under his (mankind's) feet. But to preclude confusion, v.28 hastens to say, Now when it says that 'everything' has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include GOD Himself, who later will put everything under Christ. When HE has done this, then the SON Himself will be made subject to HIM (the FATHER) who put everything under HIM (Jesus Christ), so that GOD may be ALL-IN-ALL.
2. Contrast #9-- Reaping what's sown!
A. Pleasing now In Gala 6:7-10 we have: Do not be deceived: GOD cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The 1 who sows to please his own sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the 1 who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal abundant life. I.e., there is a radical difference between the Christian & the non-Christian. It goes-without-saying that the non-Christian can only please self, as he has not even taken the initial step in pleasing the Spirit-- receiving salvation. So that this is much more about the Christian: many times throughout this work 1stCor 5:1,5 has been cited, which says that we are to hand this man practicing (sowing-- effectively teaching) sexual imorality over to Satan, so that the sinful nature might be destroyed & His Spirit saved on the Day of the LORD (may Gala 6:1 quickly be noted, though: Brothers, if someone is caught in any wrongdoing, You who are spiritual should restore such a person with a gentle spirit). But let's finish the Galatians account: Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest of treasure laid up in Heaven if we do not give up. Therfore, as We have opprtunity, let Us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
B. Harvest-time now & then In John 4:35-38 we have Jesus saying to His disciples: Do You not say, '4 months more & then the harvest'? I tell You, open Your eyes & look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. Even now the reaper draws His wages, even now He harvests the crop for eternal life, so that the sower & the reaper may be glad together. Thus the saying '1 sows & another reaps' is true. I sent You disciples to reap what You have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, & You have reaped the benefits of their labor. Eventually, sowing/reaping will require much labor/martyrdom-- then the angels will do the final reaping. In detailing the parable of the weeds, Jesus said in Matt 13:38 The harvest is the end of the age, & the harvesters are the angels. Reve 14:13,15-16 says, Then I heard a voice from Heaven say, Write: Blessed are the dead who die in the LORD from now on. Yes, says the Spirit, they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them. Then another angel called to Him (the angel) who was sitting on the cloud, 'Take Your sickle & reap, because the time to finally reap has come, for the last harvest of the earth is ripe.' So He who was seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, & the earth was harvested (vv. 17-19 talks of farther sickling). Not just the martyrs; not just the cloud of witnesses-- all believers will benefit when the angels reap.
3. Commentary #6 Baptism
- Actually, much of this expose hardly qualifies as commentary; altogether it is more like factual. It amazes me that the "higher-ups" cannot fathom that the various denominational disagreements do more to impede the will of God (2 words: Christian unity) than to establish it. The salt of the earth is well on its way to losing its savor (saltiness). I just read elsewhere that, for the most part, America's predicament can be summed up with 1 5-letter word-- greed. Well, there's 1 3-letter word that captures why it's appearing more-n-more that Christians won't unite & preserve the world-- ego. The friction that evolves from the diverse views of baptism is a good example.
- There are 2 types of baptism, quite unique in their purpose/function-- water & Holy Spirit/Fire baptisms. John the Baptist said it all, when he said in Matt 3:11 & Luke 3:16, I baptize You with water; after Me more powerful-- HE will baptize You with the Holy Spirit & with Fire.
- 1st about the baptism that God alone does ("at the time of the laying-on-of-hands" is not a disclaimer). 1stPet 3:21 emphatically says that the water that Noah & His family of 8 went through symbolizes this unique baptism that now saves You also. This is the 1-&-only baptism that save us just as it saved them.
- But that isn't to say that water baptism is all-sufficient for Christian maturity; it does have a very important purpose-- salvation. It's a very important tool for identifying with the Body of Christ. It's the 1st step in acknowledging HIM before man (recall Jesus saying, whoever acknowledges Me before men, I also will acknowledge Him). But there are subsequent steps-for-maturity-- farther steps-of-opportunity to acknowledge HIM; 1stJoh 4:2 says, If anyone still acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of GOD, GOD lives/remains in Him.

Psalm 111 Author anonymous; an acrostic poem (the 1st word of each line begins with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet-- see PerspectivesB B.2. for the other acrostic poems). Said to provide miracles & wisdom:
Praise the LORD (Heb., Hallelu YAH). I will extol the LORD with all My heart in the council of the upright & in the assembly. Great are the Works of the LORD; they are pondered by all who delight in them. Glorious & majestic are HIS Deeds, & HIS Righteousness endures forever.
- HE has caused HIS Wonders to be remembered; the LORD is Gracious & Compassionate.
- HE provides food for Those who fear (respect) HIM;
- HE remembers HIS Covenant forever.
- HE has shown HIS People the power of HIS Works, giving Them the lands of other nations. The works of HIS Hands are faithful & just; all HIS Precepts are trustworthy. They are steadfast for ever & ever, done in faithfulness & uprightness.
- HE provided redemption for HIS People;
- HE ordained HIS Covenant forever-- holy & awesome is HIS Name.
The fear of (Respect for) the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow HIS Precepts have good understanding. To HIM belongs eternal praise.

Psalm 112 Author anonymous; an acrostic poem (the 1st word of each line begins with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet-- see PerspectivesB B.2. for the other acrostic poems). Said to deal with success; texted in grape is the passage (v. 9ab) that is quoted in the N.T. (see Psalms 12 - 81 Psalm 15 2. N.T. Quotes from Psalms B.). This psalm is Far Distant & Distant prophecies, as in how things will be after the redeemer comes-- note the Far Distant prophecy (the 1st several sentences) occurs 1st; this is not the usual understanding (thus there commonly appears little difference between the condescending attitudes of religious & non-religious folk):
Praise the LORD.
Far Distant prophecy: Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who finds great delight in HIS Commands. His children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth & riches in His house, & HIS Righteousness endures forever.
Distant prophecy: Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for the gracious & compassionate & righteous man (upright LORD is Gracious & Compassionate & Righteous). GOD will come to Him who is generous & lends freely, who conducts His affairs with justice. Surely He will never be shaken; a righteous man will be remembered forever. He will have no fear of bad news; His heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD. His heart is secure, He will have no fear; in the end He will look in triumph on His foes. HE has scattered abroad HIS gifts to the poor, HIS Righteousness endures forever; HIS Horn (Dignity) will be lifted high in honor.
Return to Far Distant prophecy: The wicked man will see & be vexed, he will gnash his teeth & waste away; the longings of the wicked will come to nothing. EOP

Psalm 113 Author anonymous:
Praise the LORD. Praise, O Servants of the LORD, praise the Name of the LORD. Let the Name of the LORD be praised, both now & forevermore. From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the Name of the LORD is to be praised.
The LORD is exalted over all the nations, HIS Glory above the heavens. Who is like the LORD Our GOD, the ONE who yet sits enthroned on high, who stoops down to look on the heavens & the earth? This last portion is basically a repeat of 1stSa 2:5,8-- a portion of Hannah's prayer (for the entirety of her prayer see PerspectivesC C.2b.; note that v.8 specifies Hannah had 7 children).
- HE raises the poor from the dust & lifts the needy from the ash heap;
- HE seats them with princes so that all have equal opportunity to choose HIM, with the princes of their people.
- HE settles the once barren woman in her home as a happy mother of children. Praise the LORD.
1. Woman #4 used-of-God Hannah the prayer O course Hannah's praying benefitted her, but as a preacher recently preached, the O.T. is much "more about examples than exceptions"-- God used her to reveal the value of prayer. One of Elkanah's 2 wives, Hannah (who he really loved-- see 1stSa 1:5), was barren, & she was being tormented by the productive other wife, Peninnah. Hannah prayed, & 1stSa 1:19-20 says that Early the next morning, after Hannah alone had prayed, they arose & worshiped before the LORD & then went back to Their home-- Hannah had accompanied Elkanah on his yearly trip to sacrifice at the town of the priests, the sons of Eli (himself a priest). Elkanah lay with Hannah His wife, & the LORD remembered Her. So in the course of time Hannah conceived & gave birth to a son (the 1st of 7 children, as pointed out in the above psalm). She named Him Samuel, which name she perh. already had chosen for him, saying, 'Because I asked the LORD for Him'-- the Heb. word for Samuel sounds like the Heb. word for 'Heard of God'). As noted above, the prayer of Hannah is in PerspectivesC C.2b.
2. Men #3 & 4 used-of-God Eli the counselor; Samuel the informer This is about the child of Hannah, Samuel, being wonderfully counselled by Eli the high priest. Now just as everybody else that ever lived (except Jesus who knew no sin-- though He learned obedience by the things which He suffered), Eli did a notable wrong. His sons made themselves contemptible (1stSa 3:13)-- yes, perhaps Eli spent too much time pre-occupied with his role as high priest; perhaps feeling abandoned they chose this route in the beginning, when it was 1st said Samuel did not return home, but ministered before the LORD under Eli the priest (1stSa 2:11)-- recall it was 1st said that Eli's sons were the priests). But then Eli failed to restrain them. They became wicked men with no regard for the Lord. To what extent it was their choice & his failure is open for conjecture-- but no doubt Eli also did right when he counselled Samuel to personalize God. He did so, & God spoke to him through Samuel. 1stSa 3:1-4,8-9,11,18 says, The boy Samuel ministered before the LORD under Eli. In those days the Word of the LORD was rare; there were not many visions. 1 night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down. The Lamp of the LORD had not yet gone out, & Samuel was lying in the Temple (Tabernacle), where the Ark of GOD was. Then the LORD personally called to Samuel. This was likely the 1st time God spoke directly to him, as 2x he went to Eli (thinking he himself had spoken to Samuel). But when this happened the 3rd time, Then Eli realized that the LORD was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel, 'Go & lie down again, & this time if HE calls You, say, Speak, LORD, for YOUR Servant is listening.' And the LORD said to Samuel, See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of evryone who so much as hears of it tingle. So Samuel told Him everything.
