  25. Parable: "uncleanness" explained in the house [14] (1st pt.) above
  • Matt 15:12-20 Then the disciples came to Him & asked, Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when They heard this? He replied, Every plant that My Heavenly FATHER has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. Leave Them; They are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit. Peter said, Explain the parable to Us. Are You still so dull? Jesus asked Them.
    • Don't You see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach & then out of the body?
    • But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, & these make a man/woman "unclean." For out of the heart comes evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander, These are what makes a man/woman "unclean"; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him/her "unclean.
    • Mark 7:17-23 After He had left the crowd & entered the house, His disciples asked Him about this parable. Are You so dull? He asked.Don't You see that nothing that enters a man/woman from the outside can make him/her "unclean"? For it does not go into his/her heart but into his/her stomach, & then out of his/her body. (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods "clean.")He went on: What comes out of a man/woman is what makes him/her "unclean." For from within, out of men's/women's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance & folly. All these evils come from inside & make a man/woman "unclean."
    • Luke
          26. A Greek woman's faith; her daughter healed [14] (2nd pt.) above
        • Matt 15:21-28 Leaving that place in Galilee, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre & Sidon of Syrian Phoenicia (NW of the Galilean Mts.). A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to Him, crying out, Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession. Jesus did not answer a word. So His disciples came to Him & urged Him, Send her away, for she keeps crying out after Us. It appears that this is an example of, He learned obedience from what He suffered (Hebr 5:8)-- for as we saw: (1) he withdrew to the region of Tyre & Sidon; (2) he did not answer a Canaanite woman a word. This in stark contrast to: (1) the next location, as he ministers to great crowds in the region of the Decapolis; (2) an earlier time, near the beginning of his ministry, when he sought after the Samaritan woman who had touched his cloak (see PSALM 143 Woman #8 Used-of-God 1.). Was this stark contrast, what transpired in the Decapolis, the result of a learning-experience, a mood-swing, a change-of-venue on the part of Jesus? No! He answered the disciples, I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Both Samaria & the Decapolis were: once part of David & Solomon's (united) & the Israel (10-tribe) part of the divided kingdom, & then shadows of the "10 lost tribes." But the Tyre & Sidon region was never part of either of the kingdoms (though a sliver of it between Sidon & the Litani R., was once part of the of 1 of the original 12 tribes that exited Egypt-- Asher). See PART 1, F F.6.b. (pt. Asher). Perhaps this woman's ancestors were within this sliver-- indeed, the following Mark account says he 1st went to the vicinity of Tyre: The woman came & knelt before Him, Lord, help me! she said. He replied, It is not right to take the children's bread & toss it to their dogs. Yes, Lord, she said, but even the dogs eat crumbs that fall from their masters' table. Then Jesus answered, Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted. And her daughter was healed from that very hour.
        • Mark 7:24-30 Jesus left that place & went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house & did not want anybody to know it; yet He could not keep His presence secret. In fact, as soon as she heard about Him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an evil spirit came & fell at His feet. The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter. 1st let the children eat all They want, He told her, for it is not right to take the children's bread & toss it to their dogs. Yes, Lord, she replied, but even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs. Then He told her, For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter. She went home & found her child lying on the bed, & the demon had gone.
        • Luke

          27. The people in general were overwhelmed with amazement [14] (3rd pt.) above

        • Matt 15:29-31 The Mark account begins by giving a specific example. Jesus left there [the Tyre-Sidon region] & went SW & S along [east ofthe Sea of Galilee. Then He went up on a mountainside & sat down. Great crowds came to Him, bringing the lane, the blind, the crippled, the mute & many others, & laid them at His feet; & He healed them. The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking & the blind seeing. And they praised the GOD of Israel.
        • Mark 7:31-37 Now we have the specific example-- which takes up most of this account. Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre & went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee & into the region of the Decapolis-- east of the Sea. There some people brought to Him a man who was deaf & could hardly talk, & they begged Him to place His hand on the man. After He took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put His fingers into the man's ear. Then He spit & touched the man's tongue. He looked up to Heaven & with a deep sigh said to him, Ephphatha [which means, "Be opened"]. At this, the man's ears were opened, his tongue was loosened & he began to speak plainly. Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more He did so, the more they kept talking about it. People were overwhelmed  with amazement. 'He has done everything well,' they said. 'He even makes the deaf hear & the mute speak.'
        • Luke

          28. Jesus fed 4,000+ from 4 loaves-- 7 basketfuls left over [15] above

        • Matt 15:32-38 Jesus called the disciples to Him & said, I have compassion for these people; they have already been here with Me 3 days & have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way. His disciples answered, Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd? How many loaves do You have? Jesus asked. 7, They replied, & a few small fish. He told the crowd to sit on the ground. Then He took the 7 loaves & the fish, & when He had given thanks, He broke them & gave them to the disciples, & They in turn to the people. They all ate & were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up 7 basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The # of those who ate was 4,000, besides women & children. In PerMtMkLk6 B.20. we saw a varying-snapshots-big-picture, about the 5,000+ being fed from the 5 loaves of bread & the 2 fish (12 basketfuls left over), after considering the 4 gospel accounts. Regardless of whether the bread & fish were supplied by the disciples or the crowd, Jesus always looked up to Heaven & gave thanks. The loaves were always supplied by the disciples, and so were always distributed by the disciples. But there the Mark & John account have the fish supplied by the crowd-- Jesus himself distributed them. Here we have both the 7 loaves of bread & the fish being supplied by the disciples-- & being distributed by the disciples (with 7 basketfuls left over).
        • Mark 8:1-9 During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples to Him & said, I have compassion for these people; they have already been with Me 3 days & have nothing to eat. If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some orf them have come a long distance. His disciples answered, But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them. How many loaves do You have? Jesus asked. 7, They replied. He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When He had taken the 7 loaves & gave thanks, He broke them & gave them to His disciples to set before the people, & They did so. They had a few small fish as well; He gave thanks for them also & told the disciples to distribute them. The people ate & were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up 7 basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. About 4,000 men were present.

          29. Jesus informed the Pharisees & the Sadducees about 'the sign of Jonah' The 1st Matt account: [8] (last pt.); the others: [16] above

        • Matt 12:38-45 The Matt & Mark accounts below point out that the gospel message will occur after the sign of Jonah (i.e., to that degree they are a repeat of this account), but here we have also some details of what will occur at the time of judgment: Then some of the Pharisees & teachers of the Law said to Him, Teacher, We want to see a miraculous sign from You. He answered, A wicked & adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was 3 days & 3 nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of man will be 3 days & 3 nights in the heart of the earth. I.e., as Jonah was 3 days & 3 nights in the whale, & at the end of the 3rd night He was vomited onto dry ground,so Jesus will be in the earth 3 days & 3 nights, but at the end of the 3rd 24-hour day he will ascend into Heaven. Not only that, but: The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation & condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, & now 1 greater than Jonah is here. The Queen of the South will also rise at the judgment with this generation & condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, & now 1 greater than Solomon is here. When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest & does not find it. Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.' When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean & put in order. Then it goes & takes with it 7 other spirits more wicked than itself, & they go in & live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the 1st. That is how it will be with this wicked generation who do not have the Holy Spirit occupying-the-house. That's a promise!
        • Matt 15:39 - 16:4 After Jesus had sent the crowd away, He got into a boat & went across the Sea to the vicinity of Magadan. The Pharisees & Sadducees came to Jesus & tested Him by asking Him to show Them a sign from Heaven. He replied, When evening comes, You say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,' & in the morning, 'Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red & overcast.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but You cannot interpret the signs of the times. A wicked & adulterous generation looks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah-- the sign that the though Jonah was told to simply preach repentance immediately, he ran & endured 3 days & nights in a whale (as we saw in PSALM 31 Jon <3>). Jesus then left Them & went away.
        • Mark 8:10-12 After having sent them away, He got into the boat with His disciples & went to the region of Dalmanutha. The Pharisees came & began to question Jesus. To test Him, They asked Him for a sign from Heaven. He sighed deeply & said, Why does this generation ask for a miraculous sign? I tell You the truth, no miraculous sign will be given to it now.

          30. Jesus: (a) warned of false teaching; (b) healed a blind man [17] (1st pt.) above

        • Matt 16:5-12 Only covers part (a): When They went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. Be careful, Jesus said to Them. Be on Your guard against the yeast (hypocrisy, per Luke 12:1)  of the Pharisees & Sadducees. They discussed this among themselves & said, 'Is it because We didn't bring any bread.' Aware of Their discussion, Jesus asked, You of little faith, why are You talking among yourselves about having no bread? Do You still have not understand? Don't You remember the 5 loaves for the 5,000, & how many basketfuls You gathered? Or the 7 loaves for the 4,000, & how many basketfuls You gathered? How is it You don't understand that I was not talking to You about the presence of absence of bread? But be on Your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees & Sadducees. Then They understood that He was not telling Them to guard against the yeast used or not used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees & Sadducees. Shortly after the Jews exited Egypt, God via Moses instructed them (Exo 13:3) to Eat nothing containing yeast-- this was a symbolic gesture of partaking of truth only, which became an empty tradition, so that they embraced corruption-- & guess what then came out of their mouths!
        • Mark 8:13-26 Covers both parts (a) & (b): Then He left them, got back into the boat & crossed to the other side. The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for 1 loaf They had with Them in the boat. Be careful, Jesus warned Them. Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees & that of Herod. They discussed this with 1 another & said, 'It is because We have no bread.' Aware of Their discussion, Jesus asked Them: Why are You talking about having no bread? Do You not see or understand? Ar Your hearts hardened? Do You have eyes but fail to see, & ears but fail to hear? And don't You remember? When I broke the 5 loaves for the 5,000, how many basketfuls of pieces did You pick up? 12,They replied. And when I broke the 7 loaves for the 4,000, how many basketfuls of pieces did You pick up? They answered, 7. He said to Them, Do You still not understand? They came to Bethsaida, & some people brought a blind man & begged Jesus to touch him. He took the blind man by the hand & led him outside the village. When He had spit on the man's eyes & put His hands on him, Jesus asked, Do you see anything? He looked up & said, I see people; they look like trees walking around. Once more Jesus put His hands on the man's eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, & he saw everything clearly. Jesus sent him home, saying, Don't go into the village.
