B. cont'd. (after the 2nd time in Jerusalem)

   Introduction to the feeding of the 5,000+ (after crossing the Sea of Galilee), & the walking on the water while returning:
  • the Matthew account has, He withdrew by boat to a solitary place-- & subsequently fed the 5,000+ (after which they returned & landed at Genneserat, NW of the Sea);
  • the Mark account has, They went away in a boat to a solitary place-- & subsequently fed the 5,000+ (after which they returned & landed at Genneserat, NW of the Sea);
  • the Luke account has, They withdrew to Bethsaida, NE of the Sea-- & subsequently fed the 5,000+ (nothing is said of the return, incl. the walk-on-water);
  • the John account has, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea-- & subsequently fed the 5,000+ (after which they set off intent for Capernaum);
  • these accounts together paint-a-picture, but a much more detailed/significant picture is how he fed the 5,000+ (as covered in the beginning of 20. below).

  20. Jesus fed 5,000+ from 5 loaves & 2 fish-- 12 basketfuls left over [12] (1st pt.) above-- The story of Jesus' feeding of the 5000+ is presented in 3 differing "snapshots" in the 4 gospels. There is no diagreement; rather, together we see the big picture:

  1. Both the Matt & Luke accounts have both the bread & the fish supplied by the disciples-- so that Jesus had the disciples to distribute the pieces of them both (the communication to the crowd was that, if-so-be his disciples share it, that daily bread is available through them);
  2. The Mark account has only the bread supplied by the disciples; the crowd supplied the fish-- as above, Jesus had the disciples distribute the pieces of bread, but he himself dealt with the fish (regarding the bread, the communication was as above; regarding the fish, the communication to the crowd was that, if-so-be his disciples do not share it, that daily bread is available only through him);
  3. Now the John account not only has both the bread & the fish supplied by the crowd, but specifies that the provider was a boy-- so that Jesus himself dealt with the pieces of them both, though the individual in the crowd was a precious little one (the communication to the crowd was that, if-so-be his disciples do not share, daily bread is always available only through him).
  • Matt 14:13-21 When Jesus heard what had happened [that John the Baptist had been beheaded in the prison-- described in Matt 14:1-12; Mark 6:14-29 & Luke 9:7-9], He withdrew by boat privately intent to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed Him on foot from the towns. When Jesus landed & saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them & healed their sick. As evening approached, the disciples came to Him & said, This is a remote place, & it's already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages & buy themselves some food. Jesus replied, They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat. We have here only 5 loaves of bread & 2 fish-- the special daily food that you provide us, They answered. Bring them here to Me, He said. And He directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the 5 loaves & the 2 fish & looking up to Heaven, He gave thanks & broke the loaves. Then He gave them to the disciples, & the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate & were satisfied, & the disciples picked up 12 basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The # of those who ate was about 5,000 men, besides women & children.
  • Mark 6:30-44 Having returned from having been sent: The 12 apostles gathered around Jesus & reported to Him all that They had done & taught. Then, because so many people were coming & going that They did not even have a place to eat, He said to Them, Come with Me by yourselves to a quiet place & get some rest. So They went away by themselves in a boat intent to a solitary place. But many who saw Them leaving recognized Them & ran on foot from all the towns & got there ahead of Them. When Jesus landed & saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So He began teaching them many things. By this time it was late in the day, so His disciples came to Him. This is a remote place, They said, & it's already very late. Send the people away so they can go to the surrounding countryside & villages & buy themselves something to eat. But He answered, Don't interrupt! You give them something to eat. They said to Him, That would take 8 months of a man's wages! Are We to go & spend that much on common bread & give it to them to eat? Don't delay! How many loaves of bread do You have? He asked-- testing whether they would mention the common fish the crowd had. Go & see. When They found out, They said, 5-- & 2 fish. Then Jesus directed Them to have all the people sit down in groups on the symbolically-living green grass. So they sat down on the patches in groups of hundreds & fifties. Taking the 5 loaves & the 2 fish & looking up to Heaven, He gave thanks & broke the loaves only. Then He gave them [the loaves] to His disciples, the task to set before the people. He also personally divided the 2 fish among them all. Symbolizing to the crowd that common fish would be daily food if they became disciples; communicating to the disciples that all food is automatically daily food. They all ate & were satisfied, & the disciples picked up 12 basketfuls of leftover broken pieces of bread & fish. The # of the men who had eaten was 5,000.
  • Luke 9:10-17 When the apostles returned, They reported to Jesus what They had done. Then He took Them with Him & They withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida-- Matt 11:21 refers to the miracles performed in Bethsaida, but the crowds learned about it & followed Him. He welcomed them & spoke to them about the Kingdom of GOD, & healed those who needed healing. Late in the afternoon the 12 came to Him & said, Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages & countryside & find food & lodging, because We are in a remote place here. He replied, You give them something to eat. They answered, We have only special food, 5 loaves of bread & 2 fish-- unless We go & buy food for all this crowd. (About 5,000 men were there.) But He said to His disciples, Have them sit down in groups of about 50 each. The disciples did so, & everybody sat down. Taking the 5 loaves & the 2 fish & looking up to Heaven, He gave thanks & broke them. Then He gave them to the disciples to set before the people. They all ate & were satisfied, & the disciples picked up 12 basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.

  23. All who touched Him were healed [14] (1st pt.) above

  • Matt 14:34-36 When They had crossed over, They landed at Gennesaret. And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to Him & begged Him to let the sick just touch the edge of His cloak-- they probably heard of the healed woman who had been bleeding for 12 yr. (see PerMtMkLk4 B.16.), & all who touched Him were healed.
  • Mark 6:53-56 When They had crossed over, They landed at Gennesaret & anchored there. As soon as They got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. They ran throughout that whole region & carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard He was. And wherever He went-- into the villages, town or countryside --they placed the sick in the marketplaces, They begged Him to let them touch even the edge of His cloak, & all who touched Him were healed.

  24. Parable given about what makes a man/woman "unclean" [14] (1st pt.) above

  • Matt 15:1-11 Then some Pharisees & teachers of the Law came to Jesus from Jerusalem & asked, Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don't wash Their hands before They eat! Jesus replied, And why do You break the Command of GOD for the sake of Your tradition? For GOD said, 'Honor Your father & mother' & no if-ands-or-buts;'Anyone who curses His/Her father or mother must be put to death.' Jesus was not saying that now we can curse them-- indeed, the consequence of how that's done might just be death. But he was speaking to honoring/obeying them-- on the order of worshiping the creation more than the Creator. We already saw in PerMtMkLk3 B.11. how Jesus identified his own spiritual mother, brother & sister-- 'whoever does the will of My FATHER in Heaven.' And later we shall see Jesus extending the concept of honoring parents, when he said such things as, 'everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for My sake shall receive 100x as much in this present age-- & with them, persecutions --& in the age to come, eternal life (Matt 19:29; Mark 10:29-30).' But here we have Jesus addressing the error-of-the-tradition: But You say that if a converted man/woman says to his/her father or mother, 'whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is now a blessing, as it is a Gift devoted to GOD,' [a false assumption, for it is in fact cursed; in Mal 2:2-3a God said about priests & their spiritual descendants (Pharisees & teachers of the Law claimed that "genealogy"), 'If You do not listen, & if You do not set Your heart to honor MY NAME, I will send a curse upon You, & I will curse Your blessings. Yes, that's right, I have already cursed them. Because of You I will also rebuke Your descendants.'] & you say, he/she is not to 'honor his/her father' with it. Thus You nullify the Word of GOD for the sake of Your tradition. You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when He prophesied about You in Isa 29:13: These people honor ME Their lips, but Their hearts are far from ME. They worship ME in vain; Their teachings are but rules taught by men. Jesus called the crowd to Him & said, Listen & understand. What goes into a man's mouth does not make him "unclean," but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him "unclean."

  • Mark 7:1-16 The Pharisees & some of the teachers of the Law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus & saw some of His disciples eating food with hands that that were "unclean," that is, unwashed. (The Pharisees & all the Jews do not eat unless They give Their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders. When They come from the marketplace They do not eat unless They wash. And They observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers & kettles.) So the Pharisees & teachers of the Law asked Jesus, Why don't Your disciples live according to the traditions of the elders instead of eating Their food with "unclean" hands? He replied, Isaiah was right when He prophesied about You hypocrites; as it is written: These people honor ME with Their lips, but Their hearts are far from ME. They worship ME in vain; Their teachings are but rules taught by men. You have let go of the Commands of GOD & are holding on to the traditions of men. And He said to Them: You have a fine way of setting aside the Commands of GOD in order to observe Your traditions! For Moses said, 'Honor Your father & Your mother' & 'Anyone who curses His/Her father or mother must be put to death.' But You say that if a man/woman converts & says to his/her father or mother: 'Whatever help you might have received from me is Corban' (that is, a gift devoted to GOD), then You no longer let him/her do anything for his/her father or mother. Thus You nullify the Word of GOD by Your tradition that You have handed down. And You do many things like that. Again Jesus called the crowd to Him & said, Listen to Me, everyone, & understand this. Nothing outside a man/woman can make him/her "unclean" by going into him/her. Rather, it is what comes out of a man/woman that makes him/her "unclean."
