  2. Jesus' disciples picked & ate grain on the Sabbath [8] (1st pt.) above

  • Matt 12:1-8 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry & began to pick some heads of grain & eat them. When the Pharisees saw this, They said to Him, Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful to do on the Sabbath-- they were just observing then, as opposed to the eventual challenges. He answered, Haven't You read in 1stSa 26:2-6 what David did when He & His companions were hungry? He entered the House of GOD, & He & His companions ate the consecrated bread that the priest gave him which was not lawful for Him to do, but only for the priests. Or haven't You read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple desecrate the day & yet are innocent-- which is not to say that we as a kingdom of priests are free to desecrate other than that ceremonial day. I tell You that 1 greater then the Temple is here. If You had known what these words from Hosea 6:6a mean, I desire mercy, not sacrifice-- same quote we saw in PerMtMkLk1 B.2. (v. 13), You would not have condemned the innocent. For the Son of man is LORD of the Sabbath.
  • Mark 2:23-28 1 Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, & as His disciples walked along, They began to pick some heads of grain. The Pharisees said to Him, Look, why are They doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath? He answered, Have You ever read what David did when He & His companions were hungry & in need. In the days of Abiathar the high priest, He entered the House of GOD & ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for the priest to eat. And He also gave some to His companions. Then He said to Them, The Sabbath was made for the convenience of man, not man for to fit into the mold of the Sabbath. So the Son of man is Lord even of the Sabbath-- he can transit the day of rest.
  • Luke 6:1-5 1 Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, & His disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands & eat the kernels. Some of the Pharisees asked, Why are You doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath? Jesus answered Them, Have You never read what David did when He & His companions were hungry? He entered the House of GOD, & taking the consecrated bread the priest offered, He ate what is lawful only for priests to eat. And He also gave some to His companions. Then Jesus said to Them, The Son of man is Lord of the Sabbath.

  3. Jesus healed a shriveled hand on the Sabbath [8] (2nd pt.) above

  • Matt 12:9-14 Going on from that place, He went into their synagogue, & a man with a shriveled hand was there. The Jews of the synagogue-attenders (like the Christians amongst the non-Christian church-goers of today): Looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, They asked Him, Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath? In just a few verses we'll see how the Pharisees in particular reacted. He said to Them, If any of You has a sheep & it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will You not take hold of it & lift it out? How much more valuable is a man/woman than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath. Then He said to the man, Stretch out your hand. So he stretched it out & it was completely restored, just as the other. But the Pharisees went out & plotted how They might kill Jesus.
  • Mark 3:1-6 Another time He went into the synagogue, & a man with a shriveled hand was there. Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so They watched Him closely to see if He would heal him on the Sabbath. Now wanting to be visible & confrontational: Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, Stand up in front of everyone. Then Jesus asked Them, Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill? But They remained silent. He looked around at them all in anger &, deeply distressed at their stubborn (hard) hearts, said to the man, Stretch out your hand. He stretched it out, & his hand was completely restored. Then the Pharisees went out & began to plot with the Herodians [political Herod-lovers] how they together might kill Jesus.
  • Luke 6:6-11 On another Sabbath He went into the synagogue & was teaching, & a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. The Pharisees & teachers of the Law were looking for a reason to accuse this annoying Jesus, so They watched Him closely to see if He would heal on the Sabbath. But Jesus knew what They were thinking & wanting all to witness said to the man with the shriveled hand, Get up & stand in front of everyone. So he got up & stood there. Then Jesus said to Them, I ask You, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to neglect & destroy it? He looked around at them all, & then & then said to the man, Stretch out your hand. He did so, & his hand was completely restored. But They were furious & began to discuss with 1 another what They might do to Jesus.

  4. A large crowd from Galilee followed to the Lake [8] (3rd pt.) above

  • Matt 12:15-21 Aware of this, of the plot to kill Jesus, in order to preserve the Father's timing, Jesus withdrew from that place. Though he welcomed followers: Many followed Him, & He healed all their sick, warning them not to tell who He was. this was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah in Isaiah 42:1-4: Here is MY Servant whom I have chosen, the 1 I love, in whom I delight; I will put MY Holy SPIRIT on Him like a descending dove, & He will proclaim justice to the nations. He will not quarrel or cry out; no 1 will hear His voice in the streets. A bruised reed He will not break, & a smoldering wick He will not snuff out, till He/HE leads justice to victory. In HIS Name the nations will put their hope.
  • Mark 3:7-12 Jesus withdrew with His disciples to the lake, & a large crowd from Galilee followed. When they heard all that He was doing, that he had healed many, many more people came from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, & the regions across the Jordan River & around Tyre & Sidon. Because of the crowd He told His disciples to have a small boat ready for Him, to keep the people from crowding Him. For He had healed many more, so that even more those with diseases were pushing forward to touch Him-- at least the hem of His garment! Whenever the evil spirits saw Him, they fell down before Him & cried out, You are the Son of GOD. But He gave them strict orders not to tell who He was.
  • Luke

  5. Jesus appointed 12 followers-- designating Them apostles [8] (4th pt.) above

  • Matt
  • Mark 3:13-19 Jesus went up on a mountaiside & called to Him those He wanted & They came to Him. He appointed 12-- designating Them apostles --that They might be with Him & that He might send Them out to preach & to have authority to drive out demons. These are the 12 He appointed: the 1st Simon (to whom He gave the name Peter); the 1st James son of Zebedee & His brother John (to whom together He gave the name Boanerges, which means Sons of Thunder); Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, the 2nd James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, the 2nd Simon the Zealot & Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Him-- which speaks to the depth of his love, in general to all in the world, but especially to those who open the door when he knocks (that his love includes even to those who he knows will later sell-him-out).
  • Luke 6:12-16 1 of these days Jesus went out on a mountainside to pray, & spent the night praying to GOD. When morning came, He called His disciples to Him & chose 12 of Them, whom He also designated apostles: Simon #1 (whom He named Peter), His brother Andrew, James #1, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James #2 son of Alphaeus, Simon #2 who was also called the Zealot, Judas #1 son of James, & Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
  • Addendum: Below the 12 are listed as they are found in Matthew 10:2-4 (when He sent Them out-- see PerMtMkLk5 B.18.), Mark 3:16-19 & Luke 6:14-16 (when he 1st chose them-- covered above) and Acts 1:13 (after the resurrection, when the 11 met in an upper room-- not to be confused with the Upper Room before the crucifixion). Note that the numbering is according to the list found in Luke (recall Luke writing, in Luke 1:3, that I have carefully investigated everything); note also that the listing in Acts, which was also written by Luke, agrees with the list in Luke-- minus the last 1, for by that time Judas Iscariot the traitor had committed suicide:
