A. In Galilee (after the 1st time in Jerusalem)-- Thus far we have seen about some events in the towns, Cana & Nazareth (see Cana/Nazareth A.2. & B.1.), & Capernaum (see Capernaum1 A.2.). Now we see some more events outside the towns & more in towns:

 1. 4 fishermen followed Jesus (giving him 6 disciples)

  • Matt 4:18-22 & Mark 1:15-20 see SeaOfGal 1 A.1.

 2. Jesus cast out an evil spirit

  • Mark 1:21-28 & Luke 4:31-37 see Capernaum1 B.2.

 3. Simon Peter's mother-in-law healed

  • Matt 8:14-17, Mark 1:29-34 & Luke 4:38-41 see Capernaum1 B.3.

 4. Large crowds followed Jesus (He went to a solitary place) [6] (5th pt.) above

  • Matt 4:23-25 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the Kingdom, & healing every disease & sickness among the people. News about Him spread all over Syria, & people brought to Him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, & the paralyzed, and He healed them. Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea & the regions across the Jordan followed Him.
  • Mark 1:35-39 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house & went off to a solitary place, where He prayed. Simon, 1 of the 4 new disciples, & His companions went to look for Him, & when They found Him, They exclaimed: Everyone is looking for You! Jesus replied, Let Us go somewhere else-- to the nearby villages --so I can preach there also. That is why I have come. So He traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues & driving out demons.
  • Luke 4:42-44 At daybreak Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for Him & when they came to where He was, they tried to keep Him from leaving them. But He said, I must preach the good news of the Kingdom of GOD to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent. And He kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

 5. The "Sermon on the Mount"-- The "beatitudes" & teachings are presented in Sermon1 - Sermon4. Note that in Matt 5 - 7 it is specified that they were all given on a mountainside, whereas Luke 6 has them given on a level place (of a mountainside?). Note also that Matt has the "beatitudes" only consisting of blessings, followed by 18 teachings; whereas Luke has them consisting of both blessings & woes, followed by just 4 teachings. Finally note that both of the expressions Sermon on the Mount and beatitudes are in quotes, as they do not occur in Scripture.

 6. Jesus healed a "leper" [6] (5th pt.) above

  • Matt 8:1-4 When He came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed Him. A man with leprosy (a skin condition-- which might be the leprosy known today) came & knelt before Him & said, Lord, if You are willing, You can make Me clean. Jesus reached His hand & touched the man. I am willing, He said. Be clean! Immediately He was cured of His leprosy. Then Jesus said to Him, See that You don't tell anyone. But go, show Yourself to the priest & offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them. Lev 14:1-32 describes the ritual a cleansed person had to do; the most significant portion of what we just saw was the underlined, as a testimony to them. Hopefully (see the next passage) this cleansed "leper" would enable a smooth transition, from following the written code to embracing the spirit of the Law (see Sermon1 Sermon teaching #2--the spirit...).
  • Mark 1:40-45 A man with leprosy came to Him & begged Him on His knees, If You are willing, You can make Me clean. Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out His hand & touched the man. I am willing, He said. Be clean! Immediately the leprosy left Him & He was cured. Jesus sent Him away at once with a strong warning: See that You don't tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest & offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for Your cleansing, as a testimony to Them. Instead He went out & began to talk freely, spreading the news-- thus frustrating God's timing (as when we neglect to obey-- like avoiding baptism & fellowship & leaning on Him, etc., etc.). As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places-- thus began his "private" ministry. But note: Yet the people still came to Him from everywhere.
  • Luke 5:12-16 While Jesus was in 1 of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy. When He saw Jesus, He fell with His face to the ground & begged Him, Lord, if You are willing, You can make Me clean. Jesus reached out His hand & touched the man. I am willing, He said. Be clean! And immediately the leprosy left Him. Then Jesus ordered Him, Don't tell anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest & offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for Your cleansing, as a testimony to Them. Yet the news about Him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear Him & to be healed of Their sicknesses. But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places & prayed.

B. In Galilee (after the 2nd time in Jerusalem)

 1. About fasting, patches & wineskins [8] (1st pt.) above

  • Matt 9:14-17 Then John's disciples came & asked Him, How is it that we & the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast? Jesus answered, 1st, plainly about present & future guests: How can the guests of the real bridegroom mourn while He is with Them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from Them; then They will fast. Then a parable about mixing the old life & the new life: don't fast until you're a guest-- having been born again (a new creation): No 1 sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old torn garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. Let the cloth remain unshrunk; let the garment be made new. Neither do men/women pour new wine [living water] into old wineskins. If They do, the skins will burst, the wine will run out & the wineskins will be ruined. No, They pour new wine into new wineskins, & both are preserved.
  • Mark 2:18-22 Now John's disciples & the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came & asked Jesus directly-- as opposed to going to his disciples, as we saw in the last topic above (still respectfully; not yet challenging; certainly not with the criticism we shall see), How is it that John's disciples & the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but Yours are not? Jesus answered, How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while He is with Them? They cannot, so long as They have Him with Them. But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from Them, & on that day They will fast. No 1 sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If He does, the new piece will tear away from the old, making the tear worse. And no 1 pours new wine into old wineskins. If He does, the wine will burst the skins, & both the wine & the wineskins will be ruined. No, He pours new wine into new wineskins.
  • Luke 5:33-39 They said to [challenged] Him-- 1st we saw him being respected (whether indirectly, through his disciples, or directly approached); now we see him being arbitrarily challenged (about a variety of doings); soon we shall see him specifically confronted (about what he was doing on the Sabbath); later we shall see about him in Jerusalem, John's disciples often fast & pray, & so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but Yours go on eating & drinking. Jesus answered, 1st about people: Can you make the guests of the bridegroom fast while He is with Them? But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from Them; in those days They will fast. Then He told them this parable about objects, No 1 tears a patch from a new garment & sews it on an old 1. If he does, he will have torn the new garment, & the patch from the new will not match the old. And no 1 pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins, the wine will run out & the wineskins will be ruined. No, the new wine must be poured into new wineskins. And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for he says, 'The old is better.'-- for the new wine is all about categorically & successfully resisting temptation.
