D. (cont'd.) In/near Jerusalem [22] 12. above

  8. Joseph, a member of the Jewish ruling Council, feared the Jews

  • John 19:38-42 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly He feared the Jews. With Pilate's permission, He came & took the body away. He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night-- see Psa 141 - 144 Psalm 143 1. Nichodemus...PerJohn3 A.1.(near end). Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh  aloes, about 75 pounds. Taking Jesus' body, the 2 of Them wrapped it, with the spice, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs. At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, & in the garden a new tomb, in which no 1 had ever been laid. Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation & since the tomb was nearby, They laid Jesus there.

  9. Peter & John were running to the tomb, but John outran; Peter went in 1st

  • John 20:1-9 Early on the 1st day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb & saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So She came running to Simon Peter & the other disciple, the 1 Jesus loved, & said, 'They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, & We don't know where They have put Him!' So Peter & the other disciple started for the tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter & reached the tomb 1st. And we shall see that Mary Magdalene also returned. He bent over & looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter, who was behind Him, arrived & went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb 1st, also went inside. He saw & believed that He had been moved. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)

  10. Outside the tomb, Mary Magdalene saw & spoke with Jesus
  • John 20:10-18 Then the disciples went to Their homes near Jerusalem but Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As She wept, She bent over to look into the tomb & saw 2 angels in white, seated where Jesus' body had been, 1 at the head & the other at the foot. They asked Her, 'Woman, why are You crying?' 'They have taken away My Lord,' She said, '& I don't know where they have put Him.' At this, She turned around & saw Jesus standing there, but She did not realize it was Jesus. Woman, He said, Why are You crying? Who is it You are looking for? Thinking he was the gardener, She said, 'Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell Me where you have put Him, & I will get Him-- looking around.' Jesus said to Her, Mary She turned toward Him & cried out in Aramaic, Rabboni! (which means Teacher)-- the evidence of heart knowledge of greater value than head knowledge. Jesus said, Touch Me, but Do not hold on to Me, for I have not yet returned to the FATHER. Go instead to My brothers & tell Them, 'I am returning to My FATHER & Your FATHER, to MY GOD & Your GOD'. Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: 'I have seen the Lord!' And she told Them that He had said these things to Her.

  11. He showed Them His hands & feetHe breathed on Them

  • John 20:19-23 On the evening of that same 1st day of the week, when the 10 disciples were together-- of course Judas Iscariot was not there, but neither was Thomas as we see in the next topic, with the door locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came & stood among Them & said, Peace be with you! After He said this, He showed Them His hands & side. The disciples were overjoyed when They saw the Lord. Again Jesus said, Peace be with You! As the FATHER has sent Me, I am sending You. And with that He breathed on Them & said, Receive the Holy Spirit. If You forgive anyone his sins, They are forgiven; if You do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.
  12. A week later, 'Thomas, put Your finger here; reach out Your hand; stop doubting'
  • John 20:24-31 Now Thomas (called Didymus), 1 of the original 12, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told Him, 'We have seen the Lord.' But He said to Them, 'Unless I see the nail marks in His hands & put my finger where the nails were, & put My hand into His side, I will not believe it. Thomas doubted for a week: A week later His disciples were in the house again, & Thomas was with Them. Though the doors were again locked for fear of the Jews (see topic above), as before, Jesus came & stood among Them & said, Peace be with You! Then He said to Thomas, Put Your finger here; see My hands. Reach out Your hand & put it into My side. Stop doubting & believe. Thomas said to Him, My Lord & My GOD! Then Jesus said to Him, Because You have seen Me, You have believed; blessed are Those who have not seen & yet have believed-- who says Jesus wasn't a prophet? Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of GOD, & that by believing  you may have life in His Name.

E. In Galilee [23] 1. above

  1. Jesus appeared to 7 disciples , at the Sea of Tiberias

  • John 21:1-14 Afterward Jesus appeared again to His disciples, by the Sea of Tiberius. It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathaniel from Cana of Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, & 2 other disciples (1 of them was John-- see below) were together. 'I'm going out to fish,' Simon Peter told Them, & They said, 'We'll go with You,' So They went out & got into the boat, but that night They caught nothing. Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize it was Jesus. He called out to Them, Friends, haven't You any fish? 'No,' They answered. He said, Throw Your net on the right side of the boat & You will find some. This is somewhat similar to when Jesus was 1st acquiring disciples. When He met Simon Peter & the sons of Zebedee (James & John) back then the 2nd time (see SeaOfGal 1 A.1. & 2.), He didn't specify which side of the boat they were to let down their nets (plural) from, nor the specific # & size of fish caught-- however it was cited that the nets were breaking. But now: When They did this, They were unable to haul the net in because of the large # of fish-- specific # below. Then John, the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, 'It is the Lord!' As soon as Simon Peter  heard Him say, 'It is the Lord,' He wrapped His outer garment around Him (for He had taken it off) & jumped into the water-- speedily approaching Jesus ashore. It is not said that he presumed to walk-on-water as we see in SeaOfGal 2 2.(Matt). The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for They were not far from shore, about 100 yards When They landed, They saw a fire of burning coals there with fish already on it, & some bread. Jesus said to Them, Bring some of the fish You have just caught. Simon Peter climbed aboard & dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn-- communicating that we can hold firm to the end & retain our inheritance. Jesus said to Them, Come & have breakfast. None of the disciples dared ask Him, 'Who are You?' They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread & gave it to Them, & did the same with the fish. This was now the 3rd time Jesus appeared to His disciples after He was raised from the dead.

  2. 'Feed My lambs; Take care of My sheep; Feed My sheep; Follow Me'

  • John 21:15-25 When They had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon son of John, do You truly love Me more than These? This was about a disciple loving Jesus; it is not to be confused with John, the disciple whom Jesus loved [see PerJohn 6 A.2.(John); also see v. 20 below]. Yes, Lord, He said, You know that I love You. Jesus said, Feed My lambs [young sheep]. Again Jesus said, Simon, son of John, do You truly love Me? He answered, Yes, Lord, You know that I love You. Jesus said, Take care (meet the needs) of My sheep. The 3rd time He said to Him, Simon, son of John, do You love Me? Peter was hurt because Jesus asked Him the 3rd time, 'Do You love Me? He said, Lord, You know all these things; You know that I love You. Jesus said, Continue to Feed My sheep. I tell You the truth, when You were younger You dressed yourself & went where You wanted; but when You are old You will stretch out Your hands, & someone else will dress You & lead You where You do not want to go. Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify GOD. Then He said to Him, In summation, Follow Me! Peter turned & saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following Them. (This was the 1 who had leaned back against Jesus at the Lord's Supper & had said, 'Lord, who is going to betray You?') When Peter saw Him, He asked, Lord, what about Him? Jesus answered, If I want Him to remain alive until I return, what is that to You? You must follow Me. Because of this, the rumor spread among the brothers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that He would not die; He only said, 'If I want Him to remain alive until I return, what is that to You?' This is the disciple John who testifies to these things & who wrote them down [authored the book of John-- as well as 1st & 2nd John, & Revelation]. It's not recorded in the Bible (that I could find), but the NIV annotation has, "Early church history reports that after John spent several years as an exile on the island of Patmos, he returned to Ephesus where he died as an old man, near the end of the 1st century." BTW, perhaps I should mention again that every Scripture passage in this work is according to the NIV (unless noted otherwise). Jesus did many other things as well. If every 1 of them were written down, I suppose even the whole world would not have enough room for the books that would be written.
