        Preparation Day events revisited: [22] 6.-10. above

        Remember, all the revisited events below occurred on the Jewish Preparation Day-- the day before the Sabbath & the start of the Passover Feast .

        6., the Lord's Supper was in the Jewish early evening (recall Mark 14:17 saying, When evening came; but remember the feet washing occurred during the evening meal, per John 13:1-30)-- i.e., all this in our present-day Thurs. early evening;

        7., the teachings & prayers were in the Jewish later evening-- i.e., all this in our present-day Thurs. later evening;

        8., the agony & betrayal were in the Jewish wee-hours of the morning-- i.e., all this in our present-day Good Fri. wee-hours of the morning;

        9., the arrest & trial began in the Jewish very early of the morning (see Mark 15:1)-- i.e., all this in our present-day Good Fri. early morning;

        10., the crucifixion & burial occurred in the Jewish morning - afternoon (Mark 15:25 says, It was the 3rd hour when They crucified Him; Mark 15:33-34,37 says, At the 6th hour darkness until the 9th; at the 9th hour, Jesus breathed His last)-- i.e., all this in our present-day Good Fri. morning & afternoon.

    D. In/near Jerusalem

      2. Jesus answered Pilate the Roman governor [22] 9. above

    • John 18:28-37 Then the Jews led Jesus from Caiaphas the Jewish high priest to the palace of Pilate the Roman governor with Judean jurisdiction. By now it was early morning, & to avoid ceremonial uncleanness the Jews did not enter the palace-- for it was Preparation Day, & the custom was to be ceremoniously clean themselves, & then they could consecrate their own lambs (if they entered the palace, they would become ceremoniously unclean & wouldn't be able to consecrate lambs; see 2ndChr 31:17); They wanted to be able to eat the Passover. So Pilate came out to Them & asked, 'What charges are You bringing against this man?' 'If He were not a criminal,' They replied, 'We would not have handed Him over to you.' Pilate said, 'Take Him yourselves & judge Him by Your own Law.' 'But We have no right to execute anyone by Roman decree,' the Jews objected. This happened so that the words Jesus had spoken indicating the kind of death He was going to die would be fulfilled-- i.e. not what the Jews knowingly chose, but what had been decreed, that He would be turned over to the Gentiles to be mocked, flogged & crucified (see Matt 20:19; 26:2). Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus & asked Him, Are You the king of the Jews? Is that your own idea, Jesus asked, or did others talk to you about Me. Am I a Jew? Pilate replied. It was Your own people & Your chief priests who handed You over to me. What is it You have done? Jesus said, My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, My servants would fight to prevent My arrest by the Jews. But now My kingdom is from another place. You are a king, then! said Pilate. Jesus answered, You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, & for this reason I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to Me.

      3. 'What is truth?'; Pilate took Jesus & had Him flogged  [22] 9. above

    • John 18:38 - 19:1 'What is truth?' Pilate asked himself. With this he went out & again to the Jews & said, 'I find no basis for a charge against Him. But it is Your custom for me to release to You 1 prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do You want me to release "the king of the Jews" ' They shouted back, 'No, not Him! Give Us Barabbas!' Now Barabbas had actually taken part in a rebellion. Then Pilate took Jesus & had Him flogged-- & handed Him over [as in PerMtMkLk25 D.35.(end of Matt & Mark)].

      4. The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns & clothed Him in a purple robe; Pilate handed Him over about the 6th hour [22] 9. above

    • John 19:2-16 The Roman soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns & put it on His head-- to this point there was 1 mention of soldiers (Herod's soldiers, see PerMtMkLk24 D.34.); in Gethsemane, when Jesus was 1st arrested, Simon Peter reached for His sword & cut off the right ear of Malchus, the high priest's servant. They clothed Him in a purple robe before they took him out before the Jews & went up to Him again & again, saying, Hail, king of the Jews! And they struck Him in the face. Once more Pilate came out & said to the Jews, 'Look, I am bringing Him out to You to let You know that I find no basis for a charge against Him.' When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns & the purple robe, Pilate said to Them, 'Here is the man!' As soon as the chief priests & Their officials saw Him, They shouted, 'Crucify! Crucify!' But Pilate answered, 'You take Him & crucify Him. For I find no basis for a charge against Him--whatever he said is no basis. Are you ready for the Jewish basis? The Jews insisted, 'We have a Law, & according to that Law He must die, because He claimed to be the Son of GOD'. When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, & he went back inside the palace. Where do You come from? he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer. Do You refuse to speak to me. Pilate said, Don't you realize I have power either to free You or to crucify You. My, what fear won't do; 1x again Pilate entertained the idea of reversing the words of prophesy we just saw (in D.2. above). There's something stronger than fear, though-- that would be a guilty conscious about what happened centuries ago. This is why to-this-day some Jews have not converted (remember, God's wrath lasted 2 generation). Jesus answered, You would have no power over Me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the 1 [Caiaphas the high priest] who handed Me over to you is guilty of a greater sin. But today, short of the guilty conscience, there is no difference between Jews & Gentiles (Roma 10:12). From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jews kept shouting, 'If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.' When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out & sat himself down on the judge's seat for the court's record, at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha). It was the day of Preparation of Passover Week, about the 6th hour of daylight. 'Here is Your king,' Pilate said to the Jews. But They shouted, 'Take Him away! Crucify Him!' Shall I crucify Your king?' Pilate asked. 'We have no king but Caesar,' the chief priests answered. Finally Pilate handed Him over to Them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.

    Some more Scriptures about the equality of Jews & Gentile in the need of salvation:

    Peter said (Acts 10:28), GOD has shown me that I shall not call any man more impure or unclean, but to be impartial;

    Paul said (Roma 1:16; 3:9-- besides the Roma 10:12 we saw), I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the Power of GOD for the salvation of everyone who believes, 1st for the Jew, then for the Gentile; the Jews & Gentiles are all under personal sin.

      5. Jesus carried His own cross [22] 10. above

    • John 19:17 Carrying His own cross, He went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). This appears to be a discrepancy from Matt, Mark & Luke, which have Cyrene being forced to carry the cross, but likely Jesus only began carrying it (note, in PerMtMkLk25 D.37.(Luke) that the 2 criminals, who were later crucified with him, followed Him to Golgotha). Therefore, likely this 1 verse in John only covers the beginning of the trek.

      6. Jesus was crucified near the city; a notice was prepared & fastened, written in 3 languages; the 3 Marys near the cross [22] 10. above

    • John 19:18-27 Here they crucified Him with 2 others-- 1 on each side & Jesus in the middle. Pilate had a notice prepared & fastened to the cross. It read: Jesus of Nazareth, the king of the Jews. Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, & the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin & Greek. The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, "Do not write 'The king of the Jews,' but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews." Pilate answered, 'What I have written, I have written.' When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took His clothes, dividing them into 4 shares, 1 for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This undergarment was seamless, woven in 1 piece from top to bottom. 'Let's not tear it,' they said to 1 another. 'Let's decide by lot who will get it.' This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled which said, They divided My garments among them & cast lots for My clothing (Psa 22:18). So this is what the soldiers did. Near the cross of Jesus stood His mother, His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, & Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw His mother there, & the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, Dear women, here is Your son, & to the disciple, Here is Your mother. From that time on, this disciple took Her into His home. In PerJohn6 A.2. it was conjectured that this disciple whom Jesus loved was non other than the humble John. But now this is not conjecture: there were 3 Marys standing near the cross at a point; there were the above cited His mother, His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, & Mary Magdalene-- we know his mother also was Mary wife of Joseph (see Matt 1:20,24).

      7. Jesus died; His side was pierced [22] 10. above

    • John 19:28-37 Below, scripted in grape, is the prophecy fulfilled from Psa 69:21-- there (in Psalms) it says, They put gall in My food & gave Me vinegar for My thirst. Neither this fulfillment, nor those we saw before about vinegar, say anything about food. Note that this fulfillment is quite different from the offers we saw earlier, before the crucifixion [see PerMtMkLk25 D.37.(Matt & Mark) & 38.(Luke)]-- there He refused to drink it. Here [as in PerMtMkLk26 D.39.(Matt & Mark)] we have the offer at the end of the crucifixion-- & Jesus drinking it. Jesus refusing it before the crucifixion, & receiving it immediately prior to his death, might have everything to do with his taking on the sins of the world. For more about this, see the ref. to Amos at the end of PSALM 137 Early...Per Matt. Later, knowing that all was now completed, & so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, I am thirsty. A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, & lifted it to Jesus' lips. When He had received the drink, Jesus said, It is finished. With that He bowed His head & gave up His spirit. Now it was still the day of the preparation, & the next day was to be a special Sabbath [the beginning of the Passover Feast]. Because the Jews did not want the bodies left on the cross during the Sabbath, They asked Pilate to have the legs broken & the bodies taken down. The soldiers therefore came & broke the of the 1st man who had been crucified with Jesus, & then those of the other. But when they came to Jesus & found that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. Instead, 1 of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood & water. The man who saw it [John?] has given testimony [this is the only gospel that even mentions this], & His testimony is true. He knows that He tells the truth, & He testifies so that You also may believe. These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: Not 1 of His bones will be broken (Psa 34:20-- but note that Exo 12:46b describes how the Passover (in general) was to be eaten (no broken bones), & Num 9:12a specifies how the Passover lamb was to be eaten (no broken bones), &, as another scripture says, They will look on the 1 they have pierced (Zec 12:10b).
