    Remember, all the revisited events below occurred on the Jewish Preparation Day-- the day before the Sabbath & the start of the Passover Feast.

    6., the Lord's Supper was in the Jewish early evening (recall Mark 14:17 saying, When evening came; but remember the feet washing occurred during the evening meal, per John 13:1-30)-- i.e., all this in our present-day Thurs. early evening;

    7., the teachings & prayers were in the Jewish later evening-- i.e., all this in our present-day Thurs. later evening;

    8., the agony & betrayal were in the Jewish wee-hours of the morning-- i.e., all this in our present-day Good Fri. wee-hours of the morning;

B. On the Mount of Olives (across the Kidron Valley)

  3. 'If I go, I will send the Counselor to You' [22] 7. above

  • John 16:5-15 Now I am going to HIM who sent Me, yet none of You asks Me, Where are You going? Because I have said these things,You are filled with grief. But I tell You the truth: It is for Your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to You; but if I go, I will send HIM to You. When HE comes, HE will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin & righteousness & judgment: in regard to sin, because men do not believe in Me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the FATHER, where You can see no longer-- i.e., that belief is necessary even for us Christians; & in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned-- that it is essential for our citizenship to be transferred from this world to Heaven. But I have much more to say to You, more than You can now bear-- which is why the gospel must be presented short-n-sweet (for those yet belonging to the world cannot comprehend what the Holy Spirit has revealed to us over time). But when HE, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide You into all truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, & He will tell You what is to come. He will bring glory to Me by taking from what is Mine & making it known to You. All that belongs to the FATHER is Mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is Mine & make it known to You.

  4. 'A woman giving birth has pain; but when her baby is born...' [22] 7. above

  • John 16:16-33 In a little while You will see Me no more, & then after a little while You will see Me. Some of His disciples said to 1 another, "What does He mean by saying, 'In a little while You will see Me no more, 7 then after a little while You will see Me,' & 'Because I am going to the FATHER'?" They kept asking, "What does He mean 'a little while'? We don't understand whet He is saying." Jesus saw that They wanted to ask Him about this, so He said to Them, Are You asking 1 another what I meant when I said, 'In a little while You will see Me no more, & then after a little while You will see Me.'? I tell You the truth, You will weep & mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but Your grief will turn to joy. A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. So with You: Now is Your time of grief, but I will see You again, & You will rejoice, & no 1 will take away Your joy-- oh, the scope of the joy that obliterated the grief. In that day You will no longer ask ME anything. I tell You the truth, My FATHER will give You whatever You ask in MY Name. Until now You have not asked for anything in My name. Ask & You will receive, & Your joy will be complete. Though I have throughout my ministry been speaking figuratively, using parables, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell You plainly about MY FATHER. In that day You will ask the FATHER directly in MY Name. I am not saying that you will come through me & I will ask the FATHER on Your behalf. No, the FATHER himself loves You because You have loved ME & have believed that I came from GOD. I came from the FATHER & entered the world: now I am leaving the world & going back to the FATHER. Then Jesus' disciples said, Now You are speaking clearly & without figures of speech. Now We can see that You know all things & that You do not even need to have anyone ask You questions. This makes Us believe that You came from GOD-- & so must we share the gospel plainly. You believe at last! Jesus answered. Recall the reason for his speaking in parables [see Parable1 1. The 4 types...(quotes from Isa in Matt 13:10-23; Mark 4:10-25)]-- that the Jews would 1st re-establish their trust in GOD, & then see, hear, etc. But a time has come when You will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave Me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for My FATHER is with Me. I have told You these things, so that in Me You may have peace. In this world You will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.

  5. 'I have brought YOU glory on earth; glorify Me with the glory I had with YOU' [22] 7. above

  • John 17:1-5 FATHER, the time has come. Glorify YOUR Son, that YOUR Son may glorify YOU. For YOU granted Him authority over all people that He may give eternal life to all those YOU have given Him. Now this is eternal life: that They may know YOU, the only true GOD, & Jesus Christ, whom YOU have sent. I have brought YOU glory on earth by completing the work YOU have given Me to do. And now, FATHER, glorify Me in YOUR Presence with the glory I had with YOU before the world began.

  6. 'So They may be 1 as WE; so They may have the full measure of My joy' [22] 7. above

  • John 17:6-19 I have revealed YOU to Those who YOU gave Me out of the world. They were YOURS; YOU gave Them to Me & They have obeyed YOUR Word. Now They know that everything YOU have given Me comes directly from YOU. For I gave Them directly & untarnished the words YOU gave Me & They accepted Them. They knew with certainty that I came from YOU, & They believed that YOU sent Me. I pray for Them. At this point I am not praying for the world, but for Those YOU have given Me, for They are YOURS. Indeed: All I have is YOURS, & all YOU have is Mine. And glory has come to Me through Them, I will remain in the world no longer, but They are still in the world, & I am coming to YOU. Holy FATHER, protect Them by the Power of YOUR Name-- the Name YOU gave Me --so that They may be 1 as WE are 1. While I was with Them, I protected Them & kept Them safe by that Name YOU gave Me. None has been lost except the 1 doomed to destruction so that Scripture might be fulfilled. I am coming to YOU now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that They may have the full measure of My joy within Them-- imparted by the Holy Spirit. I have given Them YOUR Word & the world has hated Them, for They are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that YOU take Them out of the world but that YOU protect Them from the evil 1. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify Them by the truth; YOUR Word is truth. As YOU sent Me into the world, I have sent Them into the world. For Them I sanctify myself, that They may be truly sanctified.

  7. 'I pray also for Those who will believe; May They also be in US ' [22] 7. above

  • John 17:20-26 My prayer is not for Them alone. I pray also for Those who will believe in ME through Their message, that all of Them may be 1, FATHER, just as YOU are in ME & I in YOU. May They also be in US so that the world may believe that YOU have sent Me. I have given Them the glory that YOU just gave back to Me at my request-- the glory in YOUR Presence (see the beginning & end of B.5. above), that They may be 1 as WE are 1: I in Them & YOU in ME. May They be brought to complete unity to let the world know that YOU sent Me & have loved Them even as YOU have loved Me. FATHER, I want Those YOU have given Me to be with ME where I am, & to see MY Glory, the glory YOU have given Me because YOU loved ME before the creation of the world. Righteous FATHER, though the world does not know YOU, I know YOU, & They do know that YOU have sent ME. I have made YOU known to Them, & will continue to make YOU known in order that the love YOU now have for Me may be in Them & that I myself may be in Them.

C. In Gethsemane (back across the Kidron Valley, SE of Jerusalem-- where the Lower City is now)

  1. When He had finished praying, Jesus crossed the Kidron Valley [22] 8. above

  • John 18:1-11 When He had finished praying on the Mt. of Olives, Jesus left with His disciples & crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was an olive grove, & He & His disciples went into it. Now Judas, who betrayed Him knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with His disciples. So Judas came to the grove, guiding a detachment of soldiers & some officials from the chief priests & Pharisees. They were torches, lanterns & weapons. Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to Him, went out & asked them, Who is it you want? Jesus of Nazareth, they replied. I am He, Jesus said. (And Judas was standing there with them.) When Jesus said, I am He, they drew back & fell to the ground. Again He asked them, Who is it you want? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. I told you that I am He, Jesus answered, If you are looking for Me, then let these men go. This happened so that the words He had spoken would be fulfilled: 'I have not lost 1 of those YOU gave Me'-- see the end of PerJohn2 B.1. Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it & struck the High Priest's servant, cutting off His right ear. (The servant's name was Malchus.) Jesus commanded Peter, Put Your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the FATHER has given Me?

D. In Jerusalem

  1. Arrest of Jesus-- taken before Annas, Caiaphas' father-in-law; Peter's 1st denial; before Caiaphas the High Priest; Peter's 2nd & 3rd denials [22] 9. above

  • John 18:12-27 Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander & the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound Him & brought Him 1st to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the High Priest that year. Caiaphas was the 1 who had advised the Jews that it would be good for 1 man to die for the people-- back in Bethany of Judea (see PerJohn5 A.3.). Simon Peter & another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the High Priest, He went with Jesus into the High Priest's courtyard, but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the High Priest, came back, spoke to the girl at the door on duty there & brought Peter in.

1st denial

'You are not 1 of His disciples, are You?' the girl at the door asked Peter. He replied, 'I am not.'

It was cold, & the servants & officials stood around a fire They had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself. Meanwhile, the father-in-law of the High Priest questioned Jesus mildly about His disciples & His teaching. I have spoken openly to the world, Jesus replied. I always taught in the synagogues or at the Temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret. Why question Me? Ask those who heard Me. Surely They know what I said. When Jesus had said this, 1 of the officials nearby struck Him in the face. 'Is this the way You answer the father-in-law of the High Priest? He demanded. If I said something wrong, Jesus replied, testify as to what I said wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did You strike Me? Then Annas sent Him, still bound, to Caiaphas the High Priest.

2nd denial

As Simon Peter stood warming himself, He was asked, 'You are not 1 of the disciples, are You?-- the same question he had been asked before. He denied it, saying, 'I am not.'

3rd denial

1 of the High Priests servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged Him, 'Didn't I see You with Him in the olive grove. Again Peter denied it, & at that moment a rooster began to crow.
