Preparation Day events revisited: [22] 6.-10. above

Remember, all the revisited events below occurred on the Jewish Preparation Day-- the day before the Sabbath & the start of the Passover Feast .

6., the Lord's Supper was in the Jewish early evening (recall Mark 14:17 saying, When evening came; but remember the feet washing occurred during the evening meal, per John 13:1-30)-- i.e., all this in our present-day Thurs. early evening;

7., the teachings & prayers were in the Jewish later evening-- i.e., all this in our present-day Thurs. later evening;

8., the agony & betrayal were in the Jewish wee-hours of the morning-- i.e., all this in our present-day Good Fri. wee-hours of the morning;

9., the arrest & trial began in the Jewish very early of the morning (see Mark 15:1)-- i.e., all this in our present-day Good Fri. early morning;

10., the crucifixion & burial occurred in the Jewish morning & afternoon (Mark 15:25 says, It was the 3rd hour when They crucified Him; Mark 15:33-34,37 says, At the 6th hour darkness until the 9th; at the 9th hour, Jesus breathed His last)-- i.e., all this in our present-day Good Fri. morning & afternoon.

A. In Jerusalem

  1. In the Upper Room (before eating the Lord's/Last Supper--'An example: Unless I wash Your feet, You have no part with Me'); Judas Iscariot prompted [22] 6. above

Below there are some words highlighted in green; they appear to be masculine only, but you can also consider them to be feminine.

  • John 13:1-20 It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for Him to leave this world & go to the FATHER. Having loved His own disciples who were in the world, He now showed Them the full extent of His love. The evening meal was being served, & the devil had already only prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the FATHER had put all things under His power, & that He had come from GOD & was returning to GOD; so He got up from the meal, took off His outer clothing, & wrapped a towel around His waist. After that, He poured water into a basin & began to wash His disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around Him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to Him, Lord, are You going to wash My feet? As Peter later jumped to defend Jesus when Jesus was being arrested, he felt it wise to serve Jesus by washing his feet-- not visualizing that Jesus was already entirely the spotless Lamb of GOD, that the Day of Preparation was necessary for preparation of the disciples. Jesus replied, You do not realize now what I am doing, but later You will understand. No, said stubborn Peter, You shall never wash My feet. Jesus answered, Unless I wash You, You have no part with Me. Until you can accept that I haven't come to abolish the Law, but to fine-tune the traditions of the Law into the spirit of the Law (e.g., the keeping-of-the-Sabbath), you will remain out-of-sorts. Then, Lord, Simon Peter replied, not just My feet but My hands & My head as well. Jesus answered, A person that has had a bath [as baptism proclaims] needs only to wash his feet depending if he subsequently sins upon walking; His whole body is clean. And You are clean, though not every one of You. Judas, having been prompted, needed more than just feet cleansed, for he later not only went to the city alone, but also conspired with the enemy: For He knew who was going to betray Him, & that was why He said not every one was clean. When He had finished washing Their feet, He put on His clothes & returned to His place at the table. Do You not understand what I have done for You? He asked Them. You call Me Teacher & Lord, & rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, Your Lord & Teacher, have washed Your feet, You also should walk together & wash one anothers feet-- guiding & forgiving one another. I have set You an example that You should do as I have done for You. I tell You the truth, no servant is greater than his master [repeated in B.2. below], nor is a messenger greater than the 1 who sent him. Now that You know these things, You will be blessed if You do them. Now about Judas again: I am not referring to all of You; I know that those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture: He who shares MY Bread has lifted up His heel against ME. (Psa 41:9bc). I am telling You now before it happens, so that when it does happen, You will believe not that the devil has had a victory, but that I am HE. Now about the futureI tell You the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send [like prophets for the purpose of unity of the faith] accepts ME; & whoever accepts ME accepts the ONE who sent ME.

  2. In the Upper Room (while eating the Lord's/Last Supper--after the feet washing); Satan entered Judas [22] 6. above

Note that the entire phrase, the Upper Room, is in the bible [see PerMtMkLk22 D.24.(Matt & Luke)]-- unlike the phrases, the Lord's/Last Supper (see PerMtMkLk22 D.25.), in which the Bible only cites Supper. But it was noted that it is proper to say the Lord's/Last Supper Now there is another phrase, the Garden of Gethsemane, which is improperly used. Gethsemane is the location where Jesus went to pray [see PerMtMkLk23 D.27.(Matt & Mark)], & there is no mention in the Bible of a garden there-- however, later when Jesus was crucified, he was placed in a new tomb in a nearby garden (John 19:41):

  • John 13:21-30 After He had said this last-sentence prophecy of the last topic, Jesus was troubled in spirit & testified about the near-present, I tell You the truth, 1 of You is going to betray Me. His disciples stared at 1 another, at a loss to know which of Them He meant. 1 of Them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to Him. This disciple whom Jesus loved (identified in the same way in John 19:26; 20:2; 21:7,20) has been traditionally identified as John. It makes sense that he would be humble & remain un-named-- John 21:24 goes on to say, This is the disciple who testifies to these things & who wrote them down, Jesus did many other things as well. If every 1 of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written. Simon Peter motioned to this disciple & said, 'Ask Him which 1 He means.' Leaning back against Jesus, He asked Him, Lord, who is it? Jesus answered, It is the 1 to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish. Then, dipping the piece of bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon. As soon as Judas took the bread that was dipped (confirming that this was all according to God's plan "that was coming together'), Satan entered into Him. What You are about to do, do quickly, Jesus told Him, but no 1 at the meal understood why Jesus said this to Him. Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling Him to buy what was needed for the Feast, or to give something to the poor. As soon as Judas had taken the dipped Bread, He went out. And it was night.

  3. In the Upper Room (while/after eating the Lord's/Last Supper); Peter's denial predicted (before the rooster crows) [22] 6. above

  • John 13:31-38 When He, Judas, was gone, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified & GOD is glorified in Him. If GOD is glorified in Him, GOD will glorify the Son in himself, & will glorify HIM at once. My children, I will be with You only a little longer. You will look for Me, & just as I told the Jews, so I tell You now: Where I am going, You cannot come. A new command I give You-- the spirit-of-the-Law applied to the old 2nd category, Love Your neighbor, but hate Your enemy (see Sermon2 Sermon Teaching #8 & PerMtMkLk19 D.9.): Love 1 another. As I have loved You, so must You love 1 another. Simon Peter asked Him, Lord, where are You going? Jesus replied, Where I am going, You cannot follow Me now, but You will follow Me later. Peter asked, Lord, why can't I follow You now? I will lay down My life for You. Then Jesus answered, Will You really lay down Your life for Me? I tell You the truth, before the rooster crows, You will disown Me 3x!

  4. Yet in Jerusalem: 'Anyone who has seen Me has seen the FATHER' [22] 6. above

  • John 14:1-14 Do not let Your heart be troubled. Trust in GOD; trust also in Me. In My FATHER'S House are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have already told You. I am going to prepare a place for You. And if I go & prepare a place for You, I will come back & take You to be with Me that You may be where I am. You already know the way to the place where I am going. Thomas said to Him, Lord, We don't know where You are going, so how can We know the way. Jesus answered, As I said before (John 11:25 says, 'I am the resurrection & the life-- see PerJohn5 A.1.), I am the way & the truth & the life. No 1 comes to the FATHER except through ME. If You really knew Me, You would know My FATHER as well. From now on, You do know HIM & have seen HIM. Judas Iscariot did not really know him-- hence he will at most be in the foundation of the mountain (having been a script-character). Phillip said, Lord, show Us the FATHER & that will be enough for Us. Jesus answered: Don't You really know Me, Philip, even after I have been among You for such a long time? Anyone who has just seen Me has seen the FATHER. How can You say, 'Show Us the FATHER'? Don't You believe that I am in the FATHER, & the FATHER is in Me? The words that I say to You are not just My own. Rather, it is the FATHER, living in Me, who is doing HIS Work. If you accept this you will really know me. Believe Me when I say that both I am in FATHER & the FATHER is in Me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves-- we shall see Jesus saying, 'Blessed are who have not seen & yet have believed (John 20:29)!' I tell You the truth, anyone who has faith in Me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the FATHER. And once there I will do whatever You ask in MY Name [according to MY Will], so that the SON may continue to bring glory to the FATHER. You may ask for anything in MY Name, & I will do it.

  5. 'Another Counselor will be in You-- I will not leave You as orphans' [22] 6. above

Below there are many words highlighted in green; they appear to be masculine only, but you can also consider them to be feminine.

  • John 14:15-31 If any of You disciples love Me nowin the future You will obey what I command. And I will ask the FATHER, & HE will give You another Counselor [the Holy Spirit] to be with You forever-- the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept Him [the Holy Spirit] now, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But You know Him, for He both lives now with & will be in You. I will not leave You as orphans; I will come to You-- as the FATHER & Son were 1, so will be the SON & Holy Spirit. Before long, the world will not see Me anymore, but You will see ME. Because I live, You also will live. On that day You will realize that I am in MY FATHER, & You are in ME, & I am in You. Whoever has My present Commands & obeys them, He is the 1 who loves ME. He who loves ME will be loved by MY FATHER, & I too will love Him & show myself to Him. Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot, but recall the Judas son of James we see in PerMtMkLk2 B.5.(Luke-- s.a. Addendum, Luke & Acts). BTW, by this point during the Lord's Supper, Satan had already entered Judas Iscariot (see 2. above) said, But, Lord, why do You intend to show yourself to Us & not to the world? Jesus replied, If anyone loves Me now, He will obey My present teaching. My FATHER will love Him, & WE will come to Him & make OUR Home with Him. He who does not love Me now will not obey My present teaching. These words You now hear are not My own; they belong to the FATHER who sent ME. All this I have spoken while still with You. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the FATHER will send in MY Name, will teach You all things & will remind You of everything I have said to You. Peace I leave with You; My peace I give You. I do not give to You as the world gives. Do not let Your hearts be troubled & do not be afraid. You heard Me say, 'I am going away & I am coming back to You.' If You loved Me, You would be glad that I am going to the FATHER, for the FATHER is greater than I. I have told You now before it happens, so that when it does happen You will believe-- so you will connect the then past with the then present. I will not speak with You much longer, for the prince of this world is coming-- he who believes himself to be the script writer. He has no hold on Me, but the world must learn that I love the FATHER & that I do what My FATHER has commanded Me. Come now; let Us leave for the Mount of Olives across the Kidron Valley.

B. On the Mount of Olives (across the Kidron Valley)

  1. 'This is My chief command: Love each other' [22] 7. above

  • John 15:1-17 I am the true vine now, & My FATHER is the gardener. HE cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit HE prunes (or cleans) so that it will be even more fruitful. You disciples are already clean because of the word I have spoken to You. In the future, having been crucified with Christ: Remain in Me, & I will remain in You. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can You bear fruit unless You remain in Me. I am yet the true vine; You are yet the branches. If a man remains in Me & I in Him, He will bear much fruit; apart from ME You can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in Me, He is like a branch that is thrown away & withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire & burned. If You remain in Me & My words remain in You, ask whatever You wish, & it will be given You. This is to MY FATHER'S Glory, that You bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be MY Disciples. As the FATHER has loved Me, so have I loved You. Now remain in My love. If You obey My commands, You will remain in MY Love, just as I have obeyed My FATHER'S Commands & remain in HIS Love. I have told You this so that then MY Joy may be in You & that Your joy may be complete. My chief command now is this: Love each other as I have loved You. Greater love has no 1 than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if You do all what I command. I no longer call You servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called You friends, for everything that I learned from My FATHER I have made known to You. You did not choose Me, but I chose You & appointed You to go & bear fruit-- fruit that will last. Then the FATHER will give You whatever You ask for in MY Name. This is yet My chief command: Love each other.

  2. 'The Spirit of truth will testify about Me' [22] 7. above

  • John 15:18 - 16:4 If the world hates You disciples, keep in mind that it hated Me 1st. If You belonged to the world, it would love You as its own. As it is, You do not belong to the world, but I have chosen You out of the world. In the topic we just saw was, I no longer call You 12 servants; instead, I have called You 12 friends. Let me jump ahead to the last book of the Bible, Revelation-- a revealing, a summary, to show HIS Servants what must relatively soon take place. Of course this was not a view for his 12 disciples (friends).  But rather it is for us (servants). We are slaves to righteousness (Roma 6:18); not even servants with the freedom to stray-- though not straying, we are his servants. But contrariwise, though not yet friends, we also do not belong to the world-- our citizenship is in Heaven (Phlp 3:20)! Who then does belong to the world? 2/3 through Revelation we see that the number of mankind (those who do belong to the world) is 666. We Christians, though yet servants, do not belong to the world. But back to his 12: That is why the world hates You. Remember the words I spoke to You in Jerusalem (see A.1. above): 'No servant is greater than his master.' If they persecuted Me, they will persecute You also. If they obeyed My teaching, they will obey Yours also. They will treat You this way because of My name, for they do not know the ONE who sent Me. If I had not come & spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now, however, they have no excuse for their sin. He who hates Me hates My FATHER as well. If I had not done among them what no 1 else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen these miracles, & yet they have hated both Me & My FATHER. But this is to fulfill what is written in the Law: They hated Me without reason (Psa 35:19c; 69:4a). Now I speak a prophecy: When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to You from the FATHER, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the FATHER, not me, He will testify about Me. And You must also testify, for You have been with Me from the beginning. All this I have told You so that You will not go astray. They will put You out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills You will think he is offering a service to GOD. They will do such things because they have not known the FATHER or ME. I have told You this, so that when the time comes You will remember that I warned You--so you don't conclude the ship has lost its rudder. I did not tell You this at 1st because I was with You.
