A. In Bethany (village of Judea) [21] (3rd pt.) above

    1. Jesus wept with others for Lazarus

  • John 11:17-37 On His arrival in Bethany, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for 4 days. Bethany was less than 2 miles from Jerusalem, & many Jews had come to Martha & Mary to comfort Them in the loss of their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, She went out to meet Him, but Mary stayed at home. Lord, Martha said to Jesus, If You had been here My brother would not have died. But I know that even now GOD will give You whatever You ask. Jesus said to Her, Your brother will rise again. Martha answered, I know He will rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus said to Her, I am the resurrection & the life. He who believes in Me will live, even though He dies; & whoever lives & believes in Me will never die. Do You believe this? Yes, Lord, She told Him, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of GOD, who has come into the world. And after She had said this, She went back & called Her sister Mary aside. 'The teacher is here,' She said,  '& is asking for You.' When Mary heard this, She got up quickly & went to Him. Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met Him. When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting Her, noticed how quickly She got up & went out, They followed Her, supposing She was going to the tomb to mourn there. When Mary reached the place where Jesus was & saw Him, She fell at His feet & said, Lord, if You had been here, My brother would not have died-- shortly after this she made no comment, but just anointed his feet & wiped His feet with Her hair [as we saw in PSALM 135 Woman #7 Used-of-God Alabaster woman #3-- for the significance of this, see PSALM 146 The alabaster women(3rd pt., 5th sub-pt.)]. When Jesus saw Her weeping, & the Jews who had come along with Her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit & troubled-- not "for show", as in leaving him die for the purpose of raising him. Where have You laid Him? He asked. Come & see, Lord, They replied. Jesus wept. Then the Jews said, 'See how He loved Him!' But some of Them said similar to how Mary had, 'Could not He who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?'

    2. Lazarus is raised!

  •  John 11:38-44 Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. Take away the stone, He said. But Lord, said Martha, the sister of the dead man, by this time there is  a bad odor, for He has been there 4 days. Then Jesus said, Did I not tell You that if You believed, You would see the Glory of GOD? So They took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up to Heaven & said, FATHER, I thank YOU that YOU have heard MeI already knew that YOU have heard Me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that They may believe that YOU sent Me. When He had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, Lazarus, come out! The dead man came out, His hands & feet wrapped with strips of linen, & a cloth around His face. Jesus said to Them, Take off the grave clothes & let Him go.

    3. The final plot to kill Jesus (motivated by threat; sealed by prophecy)

  •  John 11:45-53 Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, & had seen what Jesus did, put their faith in Him. But some of Them went to the Pharisees & told Them what Jesus had done. Then the chief priests & the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin (the highest jurisdiction of the Jews, allowed by the Romans to settle all uniquely Jewish disputes, save the imposition of the death sentence). 'What are We accomplishing?', They asked the Sanhedrin. Here is this man performing many miraculous signs. If We let Him go on like this, everyone will believe in Him, & then the Romans will come & take away both our place (Temple) & are nation [self-jurisdiction]. Then 1 of Them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, & thus served on the Sanhedrin, spoke up [responded-- unwittingly giving a prophecy], 'You know nothing at all! You do not realize that in fact it is better for You that 1 man die for the sins of the people then that the whole nation [all present & scattered Jews] perish.' He did not say this on His own, but as high priest that year He prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, & not only for that nation but also for the scattered Children of GOD, to bring Them together & make Them 1-- which prophecy was broadened to include all Gentiles. So this prophecy instigated/spurred, & from that day on They plotted to take His life.
B. In Ephraim, village of Judea (or Samaria?) [21] (4th pt.) above

    1. Jesus tarried a little longer-- waiting for the right moment

  • John 11:54-57 Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the Jews. Instead He withdrew to a region near the desert, to a village called Ephraim-- 18 mi. NNE of Jerusalem (close to, if not in Samaria); Bethany was 2 mi. E of Jerusalem, where He stayed with His disciples. When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing before the Passover. The Passover was 1st instituted when the Israelites yet lived in Egypt-- to be observed on the 14th day of the 1st month (the Passover lamb was to be kept from the 10th day-- see Exo  12:1-6). And beginning with the 1st mo. of the 2nd yr. after leaving after They came out of Egypt this same observance was observed (Num 9:1-3). However, at that time a provision was made for those ceremonially unclean or away on a journey-- they could celebrate it on the 14th day of the 2nd mo. (same regulations for the alien & the native-born; Num 9:1-14). This same time (the 14th day of the 2nd mo.) was re-begun much later, for since the days of Solomon there had been nothing like this in Jerusalem-- 2ndCh 30:13-18,26. By that time, the Jews were distributed in the tribal ares they had inherited upon entering Canaan. This 2nd-mo.-observance allowed for travel/cleansing/preparation, through Jesus' time. BTW, originally in Canaan there was a region the tribe of Ephraim inherited-- the later village of Ephraim perhaps had been named Shiloh of Ephraim. They kept looking for Jesus, & as They atood in the Temple area They asked 1 another, 'What do You think? Isn't He coming to the feast at all?' But the chief priests & Pharisees had given orders that if anyone found out where Jesus was, He should report it so that They might arrest Him.

C. Back in Bethany of Judea [21] (5th pt.) above

    1. Jesus' feet anointed; plans made to kill Lazarus

  • John 12:1-11 6 days before the Passover, Jesus arrived at Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. Here a dinner was given in Jesus' honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with Him. Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; She poured it on Jesus' feet & wiped His feet with Her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But 1 of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray Him, objected, 'Why wasn't this perfume sold & the money given to the poor? It was worth a year's wages. He did not say this because He cared about the poor but because He was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, He used to help himself to what was put into it. Leave Her alone, Jesus replied. It was intended that She should save this perfume for the day of My burial-- 1 way of looking at this is that over time she saved up this pint; but as PSALM 146 The alabaster women reveals, the 1st alabaster woman early-anointed his feet as a preamble to his earthly ministry; the 2nd 1  later-anointed his head as a prelude to the crucifixion; this 1 anointed his feet as a prophecy of his heavenly ministry-- i.e., as he would walk with us after the ascension.. You will always have the poor among You, but You will not always have Me. Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there & they came, not only because of Him but also to see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead. So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, for on account of Him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus & putting their faith in Him-- there is no indication that they were successful.
D. Approached Jerusalem [21] (6th pt.) above

    1. Jesus' donkey-ride toward Jerusalem-- s.a. PSALM 10 The donkey (colt) ride Per Matt; Per Luke; Per John

  • Matt  21:1-9 see PerMtMkLk17 C.10.
  • Mark 11:1-10 same
  • Luke 19:28-44 same
  • John 12:12-19 The next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast heard that Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches & went out to meet Him, shouting, 'Hosanna' 'Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the LORD--  the green designating an O.T. quote (Psa 118:25)!' 'Blessed is the King of Israel!' Jesus had found a young donkey & sat upon it, as it is written (Zec 9:9), 'Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is coming seated on a donkey's colt.' At 1st His disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did They realize that these things had been written about Him & that They had done these things to Him. Now the crowd that was with Him when He had called Lazarus from the tomb & raised Him from the dead contiued to spread the word. Nany people, because they had heard that He had given this miraculous sign, went out to meet Him. So the Pharisees said to 1 another, 'See, this is getting Us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after Him!

E. In/near Jerusalem [22] above

    1. 'A kernel of wheat, if it dies, produces many'

  • John 12:20-36 Now there were some Greeks among Those who went up to worship at the Feast. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. 'Sir,' they said, 'we would like to see Jesus.' Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew & Philip in turn told Jesus. Jesus replied [to Philip & Andrew-- about how the Gentiles will be reached (recall, 'I have come only for the lost sheep of the house of Israel'], The hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified. I tell You the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground & dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for etrenal life. Whoever serves ME must follow ME; & where I am, MY Servant also will be. MY FATHER will honor the 1 who serves ME. Now My heart is troubled, & what shall I say? 'FATHER, save Me from this hour?' No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. FATHER, glorify YOUR Name. Then a voice came down from Heaven, I gave glorified it, & will glorify it again. The crowd that was there & heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to Him. Jesus said, This voice was for Your benefit, not Mine-- confirmation (an answer). Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men/women to myself. He said this to show the kind of death He was going to die. The crowd spoke up, "We have heard from the Law that the Christ will remain forever, so how can You say, 'The Son of man must be lifted up'? Who is this 'Son of man'?" Then Jesus told them, You are going to have the light just a little longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going. Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light. When He had finished speaking, Jesus left & hid himself from them.

    2. They loved praise from men more than praise from GOD

  • John 12:37-43 Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in Their presence, They still would not believe in Him This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: LORD, who has believed Our message & to whom has the Arm of the LORD been revealed? (Isa 53:1). For this reason They could not believe, because as Isaiah says elsewhere: HE has blinded Their eyes & deadened Their hearts, so They can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with Their hearts, nor turn-- & I would heal Them (Isa 6:10). Isaiah said this because He saw Jesus' glory & spoke about HIM. In actuality, Isaiah said this because God told him to-- it was the 1st thing God instructed him to say when God had said, whom shall I send? And who will go for US. Isaiah reponded, Here am I. Send Me! And God then said, Go & tell this people: Yet at that same time many even among the leaders believed in Him. But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; for they loved praise from men more than praise from GOD.

    3. 'What I say is what the FATHER has told Me to say'

  • John 12:44-50 Then Jesus cried out, When a man/woman believes in Me, He/She does not believe in Me only, but in the ONE who sent Me. When He/She looks at Me, He/She sees the ONE who sent Me. I have come into the world as a light, so that no 1 who believes in Me should stay in darkness. As for the person who hears My words but does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it. There is a judge for the 1 who rejects Me & does not accept My words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day. For I did not speak of My own accord, but the FATHER who sent Me commanded Me what to say & how to say it. I know that HIS Commands lead to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the FATHER has told Me to say.
