A. Back in Jerusalem [19] 3. above

    1. The healed blind man handed over & interrogated;
  • John 9:13-34 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind-- who they assumed was a sinner when they realized he was born blind (who now thought himself to be a disciple of Jesus-- but he hadn't yet ABC'd, as we shall see). Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud & opened the man's eyes was a Sabbath. Therefore the Pharisees also asked Him how He had received His sight. 'He put mud on My eyes,' the man replied, '& I washed & now I see.' Some of the Pharisees said, 'This man is not from GOD, for He does not keep the Sabbath.' But others asked, 'How can a sinner do such miraculous signs?' So They were divided. Finally They turned again to the blind man, 'What have You to say about Him. It was Your eyes He opened.' The man replied, 'He is a prophet.' The Jews still did not believe that He had been blind & had received His sight until They sent for the man's parents. 'Is this Your son?' They asked. 'Is this the 1 You say was born blind? How is it that He can now see?' 'We know He is Our son,' the parents answered, '& We know He was born blind. But how He can see now, or who opened His eyes, We don't know. Ask Him. He is of age; He will speak for himself.' His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for already the Jews had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Christ would be put out of the synagogue. That is why His parents said, 'He is of age; ask Him.' A 2nd time They summoned the man who had been born blind. 'Give glory to GOD,' They said. 'We know that this man is a sinner.' He replied, 'Whether He is a sinner or not, I don't know. 1 thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!' Then They asked Him, 'What did He do to You? How did He open Your eyes?' 'I have told You already & You did not listen. Why do You want to hear it again? Do You want to become His disciples, too-- implying he already was. Then They all hurled insults at Him & said, 'You are this man's disciple! We are disciples of Moses! We know that GOD spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, We don't even know where He comes from. The man answered, 'Now that is remarkable! You don't know where He comes from, yet He opened My eyes. You can't add 1 & 1? We know that GOD does not listen to sinners. Are you saying God then listened to a sinner? He listens to the godly man who does HIS Will. Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. Should it not be obvious he is not a sinner? If this man were not from GOD, He could do nothing.' To this They replied, 'You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture Us!' And They threw him out.

    2. 4 vv. about ABCing;

  • John 9:35-41 Some time age somebody(ies) coined the acronym, ABC (admit, believe, confess) as the steps of the path sinners proceed down on the way to receiving eternal life. It has been referred to more often on this website than any other vision-of-wisdom (perhaps not the latest was in Psalms ? - ? Psalm 143 1. Nicodemus...-- but that being 1 of the 1st references, it is not necessary to repeat the concept here). Jesus heard that They had thrown him out of the synagogue, & when He found him He said, Do you believe in the Son of GOD? Having admitted, are you now thinking, 'Is this it?" Be relieved, God is still knocking, seeking-- & awaiting the response. Who is He, sir? Tell me, so that I may believe in Him-- not just in his capacity to set things straight physically. Jesus said, You have seen Him; in fact, He is the 1 speaking with you. Now we have confession: Then the man said, Lord, I believe, & He worshiped Him. End of the 4 vv.! Jesus said, commenting, For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see & those who think they see will become blind. Some Pharisees who were with Him heard Him say this & asked, What, are We blind too? Jesus said, If You were blind, You would not be guilty of sin; but now that You claim You can see, Your guilt remains.

    3. Jesus is both the gate & (specifically) the GOOD shepherd;

  • John 10:1-21 Still speaking to some Pharisees-- talking now in general, both of the "new" sheep (the newly born again Gentiles) & of the "old" sheep (the faithful cloud of witnesses, which Hebr 11:40 says only together with Us would They be made perfect: I tell You the truth, the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief & a robber. The man who enters by the gate is the shepherd of his own sheep. The watchman opens the gate for him, & the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep & leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, & his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger's voice. Jesus used this figure of speech, but They did not understand what He was telling Them. Now he speaks of the "new" Gentile sheep: Therefore Jesus said again, I tell You the truth, I am the gate for the "new" sheep. All who came before Me were thieves & robbers, but the faithful "old" sheep did not listen to them. As for the sheep entering now: I am the gate; whoever enters through Me will be saved. He will come in & go out, & find pasture. The thief comes only to steal & kill & destroy; I have come that They might have life, & have it to the full. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming to the sheep pen he abandons the sheep & runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock & scatters it-- they are not abandoned & forsaken, but remain disoriented until they reenter the penThe man runs away because he is just a hired hand & cares nothing for the sheep. I am the good shepherdI know My sheep & My sheep know Me-- just (in the same wayas the FATHER knows Me & I know the FATHER --& I lay down My life for the sheep. Now he speaks of the "old" faithful sheep, the cloud of witnesses: I have other sheep who are not yet of this particular sheep pen. I must heal & eventually bring Them also. They too will listen to MY Voice, & there shall be 1 flock & 1 shepherd. But as for now: The reason My FATHER loves Me is that I lay down My life-- only to take it up again. No 1 takes if from Me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down & authority to take it up again. This command I received from My FATHER. I shall die for the sins of the world; then return to life; then ascend to Heaven-- so that both the "new" & the "old" sheep might have eternal life. In Colo 1 - 4 Chapter 3 4th of <1> we see a small portion of Moses' "3rd Address"-- God's promise: 'When You & Your children return to the LORD Your GOD & obey HIM with all Your heart & soul, even if You have been banished to the most distant lands, from there the LORD Your GOD will gather You; the LORD Your GOD will circumcise Your hearts, so that You may love HIM with all Your heart & soul & live (Deu 30:2, 4, 6).' At these word the Jews were again divided. Many of Them said, 'He is both demon-possessed & raving mad. Why even listen to Him?' But others said, maintaining, 'These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?'

B. During the Feast of Dedication [20] above

   1. In Solomon's Colonnade

  • John 10:22-39 Then came the Feast of Dedication at Jerusalem. It was winter, & Jesus was in the Temple area walking in Solomon's Colonnade. The Jews gathered around Him, saying, How long will You keep Us in suspense? If You are the Christ, tell Us plainly. Jesus answered, I did tell You, but You do not believe. The miracles I do in My FATHER'S Name speak for Me, but You do not believe because You are not My sheep. My sheep listen to My voice; I know Them, & They follow Me. I give Them eternal life, & They shall never perish; no 1 can snatch Them out of My hand. My FATHER, who has given Them to Me, is greater than all; no 1 can snatch Them out of My FATHER'S Hand. I & the FATHER are 1. Again the Jews picked up stones to stone Him. but Jesus said to Them, I have shown You many miracles from the FATHER. For which of these do You stone Me? We are not stoning You for any of these, replied the Jews, but for blasphemy, because You, a mere man, claim to be GOD. Jesus answered Them, Is it not written in Your Law, I have said You are gods (Psa 82:6a)? If HE called Them "gods," to whom the Word of GOD came-- & Scripture cannot be broken --what about the 1 whom the FATHER set apart as HIS very own & sent into the world? Why then do You accuse Me of blasphemy because I said, 'I am GOD'S Son'? Do not believe Me unless I do what My FATHER does. But if I do it, even though You do not believe Me, believe the miracles, that You may know & understand that the FATHER is in Me, & I in the FATHER. Again They tried to seize Him, but He escaped Their grasp.

C. Across the Jordan [21] (1st pt.) above

    1. Where many believed in Jesus

  • John 10:40-42 Then Jesus went back across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing in the early days. Here He stayed & many people came to Him. They said, 'Though John never performed a miraculous sign, all that John said about this man was true-- see Late Life John Later life... Per John & BeforeMinistry Prior to...Per Matt, Mark, Luke & John. And in that place many believed in Jesus.

    2. Jesus heard of Lazarus being sick; He stayed 2 days

  • John 11:1-16 Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary & Her sister Martha. This Bethany, less than 2 mi. from Jerusalem (John 11:18), is unique from the Bethany on the other side of the Jordan (John 1:18) where John the Baptist testified of Jesus. This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same 1 who in the future poured perfume on the LORD & wiped His feet with Her hair-- it is not covered until John 12:1-3, where it is, Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. So the sisters sent word to Jesus, Lord, the 1 You love is sick. When He heard this, Jesus said, This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for GOD'S Glory so that GOD'S Son may be glorified through it. Jesus loved Martha & Her sister & Lazarus. Yet when He heard that Lazarus was sick, He stayed where He was 2 more days. Then He said to His disciples, Let Us go back to Judea. But Rabbi, They said, a short while ago the Jews tried to stone You, & yet You are going back there? Jesus answered, Are there not 12 hours of daylight? A man who walks by day will not stumble, for he sees by this world's light. It is when he walks by night that he stumbles, for he has no light. After He had said this, He went on to tell Them, Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I going to wake Him up. His disciples replied, Lord, if He sleeps, He will get better. Jesus had been speaking of His death, but His disciples thought He meant natural sleep. So then He told Them plainly, Lazarus is dead, & for Your sake I am glad I was not there, so that You may believe. But let Us go to Him. Then Thomas (called Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, 'Let Us also go, that We may die with Him.'
