A. Back in Jerusalem [19] (3rd pt.) above1. The healed blind man handed over & interrogated;
- John 9:13-34 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud & opened the man's eyes was a Sabbath. Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. 'He put mud on my eyes,' the man replied, '& I washed & now I see.' Some of the Pharisees said, 'This man is not from GOD, for He does not keep the Sabbath.' But others asked, 'How can a sinner do such miraculous signs?' So They were divided. Finally They turned again to the blind man, 'What have you to say about Him. It was you're eyes He opened.' The man replied, 'He is a prophet.' The Jews still did not believe that he had been blind & had received his sight until They sent for the man's parents. 'Is this your son?' They asked. 'Is this the 1 you say was born blind? How is it that he can now see?' 'We know he is our son,' the parents answered, '& we know he was born blind. But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don't know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.' His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for already the Jews had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Christ would be put out of the synagogue [become an un-converted Jew] . That is why his parents said, 'He is of age; ask him.' A 2nd time They summoned the man who had been born blind. 'Give glory to GOD,' They said. 'We know that this man is a sinner.' He replied, 'Whether He is a or not, I do not know-- you say I was a sinner just because I was born blind. 1 thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!' Then They asked him, 'What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?' 'I have told You already & You did not listen. Why do You want to hear it again? Do You want to become His disciples, too-- implying he already was. Then They all hurled insults at him & said, 'You are this man's disciple! We are disciples of Moses! We know that GOD spoke to Moses, but as foe this fellow, We don't even know where He comes from. The man answered, 'Now that is remarkable! You don't know where He comes from, yet He opened my eyes. You can't add 1 & 1? We know that GOD does not listen to sinners. Are you saying God then listened to a sinner? He listens to the godly man who does HIS Will. Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. Should it not be obvious he is not a sinner? If this man were not from GOD, He could do nothing.' To this They replied, 'You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture Us!' And They threw him out.
2. 4 vv. about ABCing;
- John 9:35-41 Some time age somebody(ies) coined the acronym, ABC (admit, believe, confess) as the steps of the path sinners proceed down on the way to receiving eternal life. It has been referred to more often on this website than any other vision-of-wisdom (perhaps not the latest was in PSALM 143 Nicodemus..., but there 1 of the 1st references was referred to, so that it is not necessary to repeat the concept here). 'Course, we've already seen the 1st step-- the man born blind had many years of admitting to blindness (realizing he was deficient from birth). Indeed, we've already seen the confirmation that he had admitted-- he received his sight. But this was hardly end-of-story (much as we saw that the 5,000+ being fed was hardly end-of-story). Jesus heard that They had thrown him out of the synagogue, & when He found him He said, Do you believe in the Son of GOD? Have you admitted & are thinking, 'Is this it?" Be relieved, God is still knocking, seeking-- & awaiting the response. Who is He, sir? Tell me, so that I may farther believe in Him-- not just in his capacity to set things straight physically. Jesus said, You have seen Him; in fact, He is the 1 speaking with you. Now we have confession: Then the man said, Lord, I believe, & He worshiped Him. End of the 4 vv.! Jesus said, commenting, For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see & those who see will become blind. Some Pharisees who were with Him heard Him say this & asked, What, are We blind too? Jesus said, If You were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that You claim you can see, Your guilt remains.
3. Jesus is both the gate & (specifically) the GOOD shepherd;
- John 10:1-21 Still speaking to some Pharisees: I tell You the truth, the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief & a robber. The man who enters by the gate is the shepherd of his own sheep. The watchman opens the gate for him, & the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep & leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, & his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger's voice. Jesus used this figure of speech, but They did not understand what He was telling Them. Hoping the Pharisees could fathom the missing-piece-of-the-puzzle: Therefore Jesus said again, I tell You the truth, I am the gate for the "old" sheep-- those now making up the cloud of witnesses. All who came before Me were thieves & robbers, but the faithful sheep did not listen to them. As for the sheep entering now, I am the gate; whoever enters through Me will be saved. He/She will come in & go out, & find pasture. The staff is the staff! Comparison #1: The thief comes only to steal & kill & destroy; I have come that They might have life, & have it to the full. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. Comparison #2: The hired hand categorically is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming to the sheep pen he abandons the sheep & runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock & scatters it-- they are not abandoned & forsaken, but remain disoriented until they fit into another pen. The man runs away because he is just a hired hand & cares nothing for the sheep. I am the good shepherd; I know My sheep & My sheep know Me-- just [in the same way] as the FATHER knows Me & I know the FATHER --& I lay down My life for the sheep who recognize me in the heart of the staff. I have other sheep who are not of this particular sheep pen. I must heal & eventually bring them also. They too will listen to My voice, & there shall be 1 flock & 1 shepherd. But as for now: The reason My FATHER loves Me is that I lay down My life-- only to take it up again. No 1 takes if from Me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down & authority to take it up again. This command I received from My FATHER. I shall die for the sins of the world; then return to life; then ascend to Heaven-- so that both the sheep & the staff might have the Holy Spirit at heart). At these word the Jews were again divided. Many of Them said, 'He is both demon-possessed & raving mad. Why even listen to Him?' But others said, maintaining, 'These are not the sayings of man possessed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?'
