A.  In Jerusalem (for the Jewish Passover Feast) [3] above

    1. Jesus cleared the Temple courts & defined the Temple

  • John 2:12-25 vv. 12-17 (about Jesus clearing the Temple) are in Psalms 7 - 11 Psalm 10 4. Jesus dealt... & are not repeated here-- taking up with v. 18: Then the Jews demanded of Him, What miraculous sign can You show Us to prove Your authority to do all this? Jesus answered Them, Destroy this Temple, & I will raise it again in 3 days. The Jews replied, It has taken 46 years to build this Temple, & You're going to raise it in 3 days?  But the Temple He had spoken of was His body. After He was raised from the dead, His disciples recalled what had been said. Then They believed the Scriptures & the words that Jesus had spoken. Now while He was at Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many people saw the miraculous signs He was doing & believed in His name. But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for He knew all men. He did not need man's testimony about man, for He knew what was in a man-- recall the common belief was that the Savior would appear as a king (not as a babe become child become humble man).

    2.  Nicodemus the Pharisee (on the Jewish ruling council)

  • John 3:1-21 see Psalm ? - ? Psalm 143 1. Nicodemus...

B. In Judea (region SW of Jerusalem) [4] above

    1. John the Baptist testified farther about Jesus

  • John 3:22-36 vv. 22-26 are in Psalms 7 - 11 Psalms 10 5. Jesus baptized..., & are not repeated here-- taking up with v. 27: To this John replied, "A man can only receive what is given him from Heaven. You yourselves can testify that I said, 'I am not the Christ but am sent ahead of Him.' The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits & listens for him, & is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom's voice. That joy is mine, & is now complete. He must become greater; I must become less. The 1 who comes from above (has a heavenly father) is above all; the 1 who is from the earth (has an earthly father) belongs to the earth, & speaks as 1 from the earth. The 1 who comes from Heaven is above all. He testifies to what He has seen & heard there, but no one accepts His testimony. The man (incarnate Jesus) who has accepted it has certified that GOD is Truthful. For the 1 whom GOD has sent speaks the Words of GOD, for GOD gives the Spirit without limit to those born from above. The FATHER loves the incarnate Son & has placed everything in His Hands-- farther explained in E.2. below, which says this includes judgment. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life (is born from above), but whoever rejects the Son will not see eternal life, for GOD'S Wrath remains on him."

C. In Sychar (a town in central Samaria, the region north of Jerusalem) [5] above

    1. The Samaritan woman

  • John 4:1-42 see Psalms ? - ? Psalm 143 2. Woman #8 Used-of-God

D. In Galilee (region north of Samaria) [6] above

    1. Jesus went to Galilee

  • Mark 1:14-15  see SeaOfGal 1 A.1.(1st part of 2nd pt.)
  • Luke 4:14-15  see Cana/Nazareth B.1.(1st part of 1st pt.)
  • John 4:43-45  see Cana/Nazareth A.2.(1st part)

    2. In Cana of south-central Galilee (Jesus healed a royal official's son)

  • John 4:46-54  see Cana/Nazareth A.2.(2nd part)

E. In Jerusalem (for a Feast) [7] above

    1. Jesus healed an invalid on the Sabbath

  • John 5:1-18 Some time later, Jesus went some 60 mi. south from Cana uphill to Jerusalem for a Feast of the Jews. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda (Bethzatha; Bethsaida-- not to be confused with the town Bethsaida near the NE edge of the Sea of Galilee, across from Capernaum) & which is surrounded by 5 covered colonnades. Here a great # of disabled people used to lie-- the blind, the lame, the paralyzed (some manuscripts add, ' --and they waited for the moving of the waters. From time to time an Angel of the LORD would come down & stir up the waters. The 1st 1 into the pool after each such disturbance would be cured of whatever disease he had.'). 1 who was there had been an invalid for 38 yrs. When Jesus saw him lying there & learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, He asked him, Do You want to get well? Sir, the invalid replied, I have no 1 to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of Me. Then Jesus said to him, Get up! Pick up your mat & walk. What took place in his heart 1st? He believed! Then standing up (likely without assistance) was his 1st act/work of obedience. Stooping over & picking up the mat were the 2nd & 3rd. Considering the 38 yrs. he was already far down the road. Reviewing: At once, before he acted, the man was cured; then he picked up his mat & walked. The day on which this took place was the Sabbath, & so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, 'It is the Sabbath; the Law forbids you to carry your mat.' But He replied, 'The man who made me well-- confirming that he himself had "merely" believed --said to me, Pick up Your mat & walk. So they asked him, 'Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up & walk?' The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there. His initial intent was to communicate to his disciples that the 1st & foremost for 1 to "do" was to believe in him. Later Jesus found him at the Temple & said to him, See, you believe & obeyed, & now you are well again. Stop sinning (Repent) or something worse may happen to you. But, the man went away & told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews persecuted Him. Jesus said to Them, My FATHER is always at HIS Work to this very day-- no matter the belief, & every day I, too, am working. For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill Him; not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was even calling GOD His own FATHER, making himself equal with GOD.

    2Jesus described himself
  • John 5:19-30 Still speaking to the Jews who persecuted Him-- clarifying what John the Baptist said (see 3. above): Jesus gave Them this answer: I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; He can only do what He sees His FATHER doing, because whatever the FATHER does the Son does also. For the FATHER loves the incarnate Son & shows Him all that HE does. Yes, to your amazement HE will show Him even greater things than these. For just as the FATHER now raises the dead & gives them life, even so the incarnate Son gives life to whom He is pleased to give it. Moreover, the FATHER now judges no 1, but has entrusted all judgment to the present Son, that all may honor the Son just as they honor the FATHER. He who does not now honor the Son does not honor the FATHER, who sent HIM [ the begotten, not made (created) SON]. I tell you the truth, whoever hears My word & believes HIM who sent Me even now has eternal life & will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.  I tell you the truth, a time will come & now has come when the dead will "hear" the voice of the Son of GOD & those who indeed hear will live-- & be the cloud of witnesses. For as the FATHER has life in himself, so HE has granted the Son to have life in himself. And HE has given Him authority to judge because He is the Son of man. Do not be amazed at this. for a time is coming-- unlike the time will come & now has come that we just saw --when all who are in their graves will hear HIS Voice & come out-- those who have done good will rise to live-- as the cloud of witness not made perfect without us, & those who have done evil will rise to be condemned. By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, & My judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but HIM who sent Me.

    3. Jesus compared his testimony with John the Baptist's

  • John 5:31-47 If I testify about myself,  My testimony is not valid. There is another who testifies in My favor, & I know that His testimony about Me is valid. You have sent to John & He has testified to the truth. Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that You may be saved. John was a lamp that burned & gave light, & You chose for a time to enjoy His light. I have testimony wightier than that of John. For the very work that the FATHER has sent Me to finish, & which I am doing, testifies that the FATHER has sent Me. And the FATHER who sent Me has himself testified concerning Me. You have never heard HIS Voice nor seen HIS Form, nor does HIS Word dwell in You, for You do not believe the 1 HE sent. You diligently study the Scriptures because You think that by them You possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about Me, yet You refuse to come to Me to have life. I do not accept praise from men, but I know You. I know that You do not have the Love of GOD in Your hearts. I have come in My FATHER'S Name, & You do not accept Me; but if someone else comes in his own name, You will accept him. How can You believe if You accept praise from 1 another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only GOD? But do not think that I will accuse You before the FATHER. Your accuser is Moses, on whom Your hopes are set. If you believed Moses, You would believe Me, for He wrote about Me. But since You do not believe what He wrote, how are You going to believe what I say?

F. Near the NE shore of the Sea of Galilee [12] 1. above

    1. Jesus fed 5,000+ ("spoke" to daily bread)

  • Matt 14:13-21; Mark 6:30-44; Luke 9:10-17 see SeaOfGal 1 C.1.  It is important to note that the daily bread played a vital role in the satisfaction of both the crowd's & the disciples' hungers-- but note Mark 6:51-52 (see SeaOfGal 2 A.1.), which says even the disciples did not grasp the huge contrast-- else they would not have been so completely amazed when Jesus walked on the water, for They had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.
  • John 6:1-15 As is evident in the treatments just mentioned, the emphasis was on contrasting the usefulness of special daily bread of the disciples vs. the common bread of the crowd-- that the daily bread (the bread from Heaven) of the disciples can be joyfully received by the crowd via the disciples, to the satisfaction of their hunger, as well the disciples'-- whereas the crowd's common bread had to be handled directly by Jesus. I.e., exposed is a usefulness of the daily bread we are to pray for daily, which is not-so-commonly employed (not covered here is the abundant value of daily bread generously shared in the fellowship of believers).  But about the contrast: Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (i.e., the Sea of Tiberius), & a great crowd of people followed Him because they saw the miraculous signs He had performed on the sick in Jerusalem, et al. Then Jesus went up on a mountainside & sat with His disciples. Obviously some months had elapsed (perh. 3 mo.). The Jewish Passover Feast was near. Recall the conjecture was that the un-named feast he had gone to was the June 6th Feast of Pentecost, & in ch. 7 we have him going to the Oct.15-21 Feast of Tabernacles. When Jesus looked up & saw a great crowd coming toward Him, He said to Philip in particular, Where shall We buy bread for these people to eat? He asked this to test Him, for He already had in mind what He was going to do. Philip answered Him, 8 mo. wages would not buy enough bread for each 1 to have even a bite! Another of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up, Here is a boy with 5 small barley loaves & 2 small fish, but how far will they go among so many? Jesus said, Have the people sit down. There was plenty of grass in that place, & the men sat down, about 5,000 of them.Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, & distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish. When they had all, including the disciples, had enough to eat, He said to His disciples, Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted. So They gathered 12 baskets with the pieces of the 5 barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. After the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus did, they began to say, 'Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world'-- from Deu 18:15,18 (which says nothing about a king). Jesus, knowing that they intended to come & make Him a king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.
