D. (cont'd) During the 5th time in/near Jerusalem

  47. While They were talking, He showed Them His hands & feet (Thomas not there) [22] 12. above

He appeared to 10 disciples the 1st time in Jerusalem

  • Matt
  • Mark
  • Luke 24:36-43 While They were talking about this, Jesus himself stood among Them & said to Them, Peace be with You. They were startled & frightened, thinking They saw a ghost. He said to Them, Why are You troubled, & why do doubts arise in Your minds? Look at My hands & feet. It is I myself! Touch Me & see; a ghost does not have flesh & bones, as You see I have. When He had said this, He showed Them His hands & feet. And while They still did not believe it because of joy & amazement, He asked them by way of farther demonstrating he was human, Do You have anything here to eat? They gave Him a piece of broiled fish, & He took it & ate it in Their presence.
  • John 20:19-23 see PerJohn9 D.11.

  48. Jesus appeared to the 11 as They were eating (including Thomas) [22] 12. above

He appeared to  11 disciples the 2nd time in Jerusalem
  • Matt
  • Mark 16:14 Later Jesus appeared to the 11 as They were eating; He rebuked Them for Their lack of faith & stubborn refusal to believe Those who had seen Him after He had risen. The John account has (a week later) Thomas touching his side.
  • Luke
  • John 20:24-31 see PerJohn9 D.12.

  49. 'Stay in the city until You have been clothed with power' [22] 12. above

  • Matt
  • Mark
  • Luke 24:44-49 He said to Them, This is what I told You while I was still with You: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets & the Psalms. Then He opened Their minds so They could understand the Scriptures. He told Them, This is what is written: the Christ will suffer & rise from the dead on the 3rd day, & repentance  & forgiveness of sins will be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. I am going to send You what My FATHER has promised; But stay in the city until You have been clothed with power from on high.

E. In Galilee

  1. Then the 11 disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain (the 1st time) [23] 1. above

    John 21:1 says He appeared to only 7 disciples in Galilee, by the Sea

  • Matt 28:16-20 Then the 11 disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told Them to go-- there is a separate John account when Jesus met them fishing at the Sea of Galilee (see PerJohn9 E.1.)  When They saw Him, They worshiped Him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to Them & said, All authority in Heaven & on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go & make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the FATHER & of the Son & of the Holy Spirit, & teaching Them to obey everything I have commanded You. And surely I am with You always, to the very end of the age.
  • Mark 16:15-18 He said to Them, Go into all the world & preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes & is baptized will be saved, but who ever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In My Name They will drive out demons; They will speak in new tongues; They will pick up snakes with Their hands; & when They drink deadly poison, it will not hurt Them at all;They will place Their hands on sick people, & They will get well.
  • Luke
  2. He led Them out to the vicinity of Bethany; He was taken up (he ascended); They returned to Jerusalem [23] 2. above
  • Matt
  • Mark 16:19-20 After the Lord had spoken to Them, He was taken up into Heaven & HE sat at the Right Hand of GOD. Then the disciples went out & preached everywhere, & the LORD worked with Them & confirmed HIS Word by the signs that accompanied it.
  • Luke 24:50-53 When He had led Them out to the vicinity of Bethany, He lifted up His hands & blessed Them. While He was blessing Them, He left Them & was taken up into Heaven. Then They worshiped Him & returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And They stayed contiually at the Temple, praising GOD.

Locations of the disciples between the Resurrection & the Ascension

Jesus appeared to his disciples (excluding Judas Iscariot, of course):

  • 2x in Galilee
    1. to 11 disciples (at the mountain)
      • see Matt 28:16-20
      • see E.1. above
    2. to 7 disciples (at the Sea of Tiberias)
      • see John 21:1-14
      • see PerJohn9 E.1.
  • 2x in Jerusalem
    1. to 10 disciples (not to Thomas; showed his hands & feet to the 10)
      • see Mark 16:14; Luke 24:36-49; John 20:19-23
      • see D.44.-49. above & PerJohn9 D.11.
    2. to 11 disciples (allowed Thomas to touch His hands & side)
      • see John 20:24-31
      • see PerJohn9 D.12.
BTW, this brief accounting of where Jesus met the 11 does not disclose where the ascension took place. According to:
  • Matt 28, the resurrected (but yet not recognized) Jesus told his disciples to go to Galilee. Nothing is said of Jesus meeting them at the Sea of Galilee, but he did meet the 11 on a mountain in Galilee & gave the "Great Commission" in full  (Matt 28:16-20). But it's imperative to note that Matt ends abruptly there-- not 1 word is said about the ascension (which took place later, near Jerusalem);
  • Mark 16, an angel instructed Mary to tell His disciples & Peter, ' He is going ahead of You into Galilee.' There is no accounting of the events in Galilee, but later in Jerusalem the "Great Commission" is reiterated-- & then the ascension is told of;
  • Luke 24, there is no mention of Galilee, but Luke immediately proceeds to describe events near Jerusalem, beginning with Emmaus about 7 mi. from Jerusalem. Again the "Great Commission" is reiterated; again the ascension is told of-- but this time it is specified to have taken place in the vicinity of Bethany;
  • John 21, the events at the Sea of Galilee are given; but then similar to the Mark account, there is the leap to Jerusalem-- except there is no mention of the ascension.
Note that Acts 1:12 says that the disciples returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day's walk-- indicating that the ascension took place near Jerusalem, that the disciples had 1st gone to Galilee & then returned to Jerusalem. Note also that Acts 1:3 says that He appeared to Them over a period of 40 days.
