D. (cont'd) During the 5th time in/near Jerusalem
41. "We remember the deceiver said, 'After 3 days...' " [22] 11. above
- Matt 27:62-66 The next day (1st day of the Passover), the 1 after Preparation Day, the chief priests & the Pharisees went to Pilate. 'Sir,' They said, 'We remember that while He was still alive that the deceiver said, After 3 days I will rise again. So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the 3rd day. Otherwise, His disciples may come & steal the body & tell the people that He has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the 1st.' 'Take a guard,' Pilate answered. 'Go, make the tomb as secure as You know how.' So They went & made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone & posting the guard. Strange, in light of the picky accusations of Jesus working on the Sabbath, that they thought it acceptable to follow Pilate's OK to make the tomb as secure as possible-- by sealing it & posting multiple guards (soldiers) on the Sabbath [see below, 42.(Matt.)].
- Mark
- Luke
42. An Angel of the LORD came down from Heaven [22] 12. above
- Matt 28:1-7 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the 1st day of the week, Mary Magdalene & the other Mary {His mother's sister [aunt-- see below, Mark, & PerMtMkLk26 D.40.(end of Matt)]} went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an Angel of the LORD came down from Heaven &, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone & sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, & His clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of Him that they shook & became like dead men. The Angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that You are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen, just as He said. Come & see the place where He lay. Then go quickly & tell His disciples: 'He has risen from the dead & is going ahead of You into Galilee. There You will see Him.' Now I have told You."
- Mark 16:1-8 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, his aunt Mary the mother of James, & Salome bought spices so that They might go to anoint Jesus' body. Very early on the 1st day of the week, just after sunrise, They were on Their way to the tomb & They asked each other, 'Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?' But when They looked up, They saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. As They entered the tomb, They saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, & They were alarmed. "Don't be alarmed," He said. "You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. We know that Jesus was born in Nazareth, & seemingly hence he was called a Nazarene. But that's hardly end-of-story. Num 6:1-21 details the various rules a Nazirite (a person dedicating a period of time to God) had to follow. This subject is touched in PerJohn8 D.7., when I refer to Psalms ? - ? Psalm 137 2. Early...Per Matt-- which points out the passage in Amos, in which God accuses the Jews of forcing the Nazirites to drink wine. BTW, that passage above in Numbers also points out that a Nazirite could not shave his head-- but that has no relevance here. Relevant is Jdg 13:2-7, which describes the announcement by an angel to Manoah's wife (about Samson), who was sterile & childless, that she would conceive & bare a son, who would be a Nazirite of GOD not just for a period of time but from birth until the day of his death (recall that Jesus refused the wine until just before his death-- indeed, immediately upon accepting the wine, he said, It is finished). Also, there is the accusation (in Acts 24:5) that Paul was a ringleader of the Nazarene sect-- to which Paul retorts (in v. 14), I admit that I worship the GOD of Our fathers as a follower of the Way, which They call a sect. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where They laid Him. But go & tell His disciples & especially Peter (see the Luke account below), 'He is going ahead of You into Galilee. There You will see Him, just as He told You-- see PerMtMkLk23 D.27.(Mark)'." Trembling & bewildered, the women went out & fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone at that time, because They were afraid.
- Luke 24:1-12 On the 1st day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices They had prepared & went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when They entered, They did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While They were wondering about this, suddenly 2 men in clothes that gleamed like lightening stood beside Them. In Their fright the women bowed down with Their faces to the ground, but the men said to Them, 'Why do You look for the living among the dead? He is not here; He has risen! Remember how He told You, while He was still with You in Galilee: The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified & on the 3rd day be raised again-- see PerMtMkLk8 B.32.).' Then They remembered His words. When They came back from the tomb, They told all these things to the 11 & to all the others-- the 11 excludes the betrayer Judas Iscariot, who by this time had committed suicide; the 12 are listed in PerMtMkLk2 B.5.(4th pt.). It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, & the others with Them who told this to the apostles. But They did not believe the women, because Their words seemed to Them like nonsense. Peter, however, got up & ran to the tomb. Bending over, He saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, & He went away, wondering to himself what had happened.
- John 20:1-9 (see PerJohn9 D.9.)
43. He appeared 1st to Mary Magdalene; She told the others [22] 12. above
- Matt
- Mark 16:9-11 When Jesus rose early on the 1st day of the week, He appeared 1st to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had driven 7 demons-- mentioned in Luke 8:2 (see Psalms ? - ? Psalm 133 2. Woman #6 Used-of-God (end). She went & told Those who had been with Him & who were mourning & weeping. When They heard that Jesus was alive & that She had seen Him, They did not believe it. As above in Luke when the angel informed the women, & they reported to the 11-- They did not believe.
- Luke
- John 20:10-18 (see PerJohn9 D.10.)
44. The women ran to tell the disciples; Jesus met Them [22] 12. above
45. Some of the guards went into the city & reported [22] 12. above
- Matt 28:11-15 While the women were on Their way, some of the guards went into the city & reported to the chief priests everything that had happened. When the chief priests had met with the elders & devised a plan, They gave the soldiers a large sum of money, telling them, "You are to say, 'His disciples came during the night & stole Him away while we were asleep.' If this report gets to the governor, We will satisfy him & keep you out of trouble." So the soldiers took the money & did as they were instructed. And this story has been widely circulated among the Jews to this very day.
- Mark
- Luke
46. Jesus appeared to 2 walking in the country [22] 12. above
- Matt
- Mark 16:12-13 Afterward Jesus appeared in a different form to two of Them while They were walking in the country. These returned & reported it to the rest; but They did not believe it either.
- Luke 24:13-35 Now that same day 2 of Them were going to a village called Emmaus, about 7 miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As They talked & discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up & walked with Them; but They were kept from recognizing Him. He asked Them, What are You discussing together as You walk along? They stood still, Their faces downcast. 1of Them, named Cleopas, asked Him, Are You only a visitor to Jerusalem & do not know the things that have happened there in these days? What things? He asked. About Jesus of Nazareth, They replied. He was a prophet, powerful in word & deed before GOD & all the people. The chief priests & Our rulers handed Him over to be sentenced to death-- Judea had been a Roman Province for some 25 yrs. now , & they crucified Him; but We had hoped that He was the 1 who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is yet the 3rd day since all this took place. In addition, some of Our women amazed Us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn't find His body. They came & told Us that They had seen a vision of angels, who said He was alive. Then some of Our companions went to the tomb & found it just as the women had said, but Him They did not see. He said to Them, How foolish are You, & how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things & then enter His glory? And beginning with Moses & all the Prophets, He explained to Them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. As They approached the village to which They were going, Jesus acted as if He were going farther. But They urged Him strongly, Stay with Us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over. So He went in to stay with Them. When He was at the table with Them, He took bread, gave thanks, broke it & began to give it to Them. Then Their eyes were opened & They recognized Him, & He disappeared from Their sight. They asked each other, 'Were not Our hearts burning (tingling) within Us while He talked with Us on the road & opened the Scriptures to Us?' They got up & returned at once to Jerusalem. There They found the 11 & those with Them, assembled together, & saying, 'It is true! The Lord has risen & appeared to Simon-- recall Peter running to witness after being informed by the women [see 42.(Luke) above].' Then the 2 told what had happened on the way, & how Jesus was recognized by Them when He broke the bread.
