Preparation Day events revisited: [22] 6.-10. above
Remember, all the revisited events below occurred on the Jewish Preparation Day-- the day before the Sabbath & the start of the Passover Feast.
6., the Lord's Supper was in the Jewish early evening (recall Mark 14:17 saying, When evening came; but remember the feet washing occurred during the evening meal, per John 13:1-30)-- i.e., all this in our present-day Thurs. early evening;
7., the teachings & prayers were in the Jewish later evening-- i.e., all this in our present-day Thurs. later evening;
8., the agony & betrayal were in the Jewish wee-hours of the morning-- i.e., all this in our present-day Good Fri. wee-hours of the morning;
9., the arrest & trial began in the Jewish very early of the morning (see Mark 15:1)-- i.e., all this in our present-day Good Fri. early morning;
10., the crucifixion & burial occurred in the Jewish morning & afternoon (Mark 15:25 says, It was the 3rd hour when They crucified Him; Mark 15:33-34,37 says, At the 6th hour darkness until the 9th; at the 9th hour, Jesus breathed His last)-- i.e., all this in our present-day Good Fri. morning & afternoon.

D. (cont'd) During the 5th time in/near Jerusalem
35. Pilate's wife sent him this message; Jesus now back to Pilate: All the Jews answered, 'Let His blood be on Us & on Our children (2 generations)!' [22] 9. above
- Matt 27:15-26 Now it was the governor's custom at the Feast to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd. At the time They had a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas. So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked Them, 'Which 1 do You want me to release to You: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?' While Pilate was sitting on the judge's seat, his wife sent him this message, 'Don't have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of Him.' But the chief priests & the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas & to have Jesus executed. 'Which of the 2 do You want me to release to You?' asked the governor. 'Barabbas,' They answered. 'What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ? Pilate asked. They all answered, 'Crucify Him!' Remember, this was Matthew's account; Matt was a Jew. Indeed, the only Gentile author in the Bible was Luke, author of Luke & Acts. 'Why? What crime has He committed?' asked Pilate. Notice the answer (or lack thereof): But They shouted all the louder, 'Crucify Him!' When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, neither in arriving at the truth, nor in preventing a riot, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water & washed his hands in front of the crowd, 'I am innocent of this man's blood,' he said. 'It is Your responsibility!' To those who would yet curse Pilate specifically (& the Roman Catholics in general) for being lame, let me remind you of who authored 1st Peter-- the disciple who spoke faith, to which Jesus said, upon this rock I will build My church (Matt 16:18). 1stPet 1:20? He was chosen before the creation of the world. So you think Pilate should have defied God? All the people answered, 'Let His blood be on Us & on Our children!' But as I implied above, in the title of this topic-- I believe God's wrath on them extends no farther than 2 generations. Then he released Barabbas to Them. But he, wanting to satisfy the crowd (as we see below in the Mark account), had Jesus flogged, & handed Him over to be crucified.
- Mark 15:6-15 Now it was the custom at the Feast to release a prisoner whom the people requested. A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising-- note the irrationality of this all. Barabbas had committed murder while participating in an actual insurrection, whereas the best anyone could accuse Jesus of was that a riot might occur. This all was an emotional reaction to what had already happened recently-- the Roman intimidating takeover. The crowd came up & asked Pilate to do for Them what he usually did. 'Do You want me to release to You the king of the Jews?' asked Pilate, knowing that it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead. BTW, no farther comment about this, but a similar envy is already occurring today-- "the unity of the faith shall be imposed by us." 'What shall I do then, with the 1 You call the king of the Jews?' Pilate asked Them. 'Crucify Him!' they shouted. 'Why? What crime has He committed?' asked Pilate. But They shouted all the louder, 'Crucify Him!' Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to Them. He had Jesus flogged, & handed Him over to be crucified.
- Luke 23:13-25 Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers & the people, & said to Them, 'You brought me this man as 1 who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined Him in Your presence & have found no basis for Your charge against Him. Neither has Herod, for he sent Him back to us; as You can see, He has done nothing to deserve death. Therefore, I will punish Him & then release Him.' With 1 voice They cried out, 'Away with this man! Release Barabbas to Us.' (Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, & for murder.) Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to Them again. But They kept shouting, 'Crucify Him! Crucify Him!' For the 3rd time he spoke to Them: 'Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in Him no grounds for the death penalty.' But with loud shouts They insistently demanded that He be crucified, & Their shouts prevailed. So Pilate decided to grant Their demand. He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection & murder, the 1 They asked for, & surrendered Jesus to Their will.
- John 18:38 - 19:1 (see PerJohn8 D.3.)
36. The governor's soldiers put a scarlet/purple robe on Him & twisted together a crown of thorns [22] 5. above
- Matt 27:27-31 Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium & gathered the whole company of soldiers around Him. They stripped Him & put a scarlet robe on Him, & then twisted together a crown of thorns & set it on His head. They put a staff in His right hand & knelt in front of Him & mocked Him. Hail, king of the Jews! they said. They spit on Him, & took the staff & struck Him on the thorns on his head. After they had mocked Him, they took off the robe & put His own clothes on Him. Then they led Him away to crucify Him.
- Mark 15:16-20 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (i.e, the Praetorium) & called together the whole company of soldiers. They out a purple robe on Him, then twisted together a crown of thorns & set it on Him. And they began to call out to Him, Hail, king of the Jews! Again & again they struck Him on the head with a staff & spit on Him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to Him. And when they had mocked Him to their satisfaction, they took off the purple robe & put His own clothes on Him. Then they led Him out to crucify Him.
- Luke
- John 19:2-16 (see PerJohn8 D.4.)
37. Jesus went to be crucified; Cyrene forced to carry the cross [22] 9. above
- Matt 27:32-34 Underlined below is what seems to be a fulfilled prophecy of Psa 69:21-- there it says, They put gall in My food & gave Me vinegar for My thirst. However, this was before the crucifixion (the key is that then he said nothing about being thisty)-- see PerMtMkLk26 D.39. & PerJohn8 D.7. for the real fulfillment . As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, & forced him to carry the cross-- perhaps a Gentile, since Acts 2:9-10 speaks of residents of parts of Libya near Cyrene (when describing the event, They began to speak in other tongues which each heard in his own language). They came to a place called Golgotha (an Aramaic name which means The Place of the Skull). There they offered Jesus wine, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, He refused to drink it.
- Mark 15:21-23 A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander & Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, & they forced him to carry the cross. They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull). Then they offered Him wine mixed with myrrh, but He did not take it.
- Luke 23:26-32 As They led Him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, & put the cross on him & made him carry it behind Jesus. A large # of people followed Him, including women who mourned & wailed for Him. Jesus turned to Them, & said, Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me; weep for yourselves & Your children. For the time will come when You will say, 'Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore & the breasts that never nursed!' Then They will say to the mountains, 'Fall on Us!' & to the hills, 'Cover Us!' (Hos 10:8b). For if men do these things now when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry? The Greek word, TEHK-nohn, rendered children here is similar to the Hebrew word rendered son in the O.T. (1st seen in PART I, D D.3.a.1., but many times hence), in that it can mean an immediate son or can mean some future descendant. In 35.(Matt) above we saw an example of it meaning immediate children; here it means future descendants-- for it describes a future circumstance when the tree is dry. 2 other men, both criminals, were also led out with Him to be crucified.
- John 19:17 (see PerJohn8 D.5.)-- note that there the 1 verse only covers the beginning of the trek to Golgotha.
38. Jesus was crucified; the written charge [22] 10. above
Below, texted in grape are some prophecies fulfilled from Psa 22-- the particular verse(s) fulfilled follow the highlights in {braces}. Note the verse in Mark that is underlined (& the portion texted in green); this verse (38) is from some manuscripts (& that in green is from Isa 53:12d):
- Matt 27:35-44 When they had crucified Him, they divided up His clothes by casting lots {18}. And sitting down, they kept watch over Him there. Above His head they placed the written charge against Him: This is Jesus, the king of the Jews. 2 robbers were crucified with Him, 1 on His right & 1 on His left. Those who passed by hurled insults at Him, shaking their heads {7} & saying, You who are going to destroy the Temple & build it in 3 days, save Yourself! Come down from the cross, if You are the Son of GOD! In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the Law & the elders mocked Him {7}. "He saved others," They said, "but He can't save Himself! He's the king of Israel! Let Him come down now from the cross, & We will believe in Him. He trusts in GOD. Let GOD rescue HIM now if HE wants Him {8}, for He said, 'I am the Son of GOD.' " In the same way the robbers who were crucified with Him also heaped insults on Him {7}.
- Mark 15:24-32 And they crucified Him. Dividing up His clothes, They cast lots to see what each would get {18}. It was the 3rd hour when they crucified Him-- figuring dawn was at 6:00 AM (Jerusalem time), he was crucified beginning between 8:00 & 9:00 AM Jerusalem time): 6:00 - 7:00 was the 1st hour; 7:00 - 8:00 was the 2nd hour; 8:00 - 9:00 was the 3rd hour. The written notice of the charge against Him read: The king of the Jews. They crucified 2 robbers with Him, 1 on His right & 1 on His left, & the scripture was fulfilled which says, He was counted with the lawless ones. Those who passed by hurled insults at Him, shaking their heads {7} & saying, So! You who are going to destroy the Temple & build it in 3 days, come down from the cross & save Yourself! In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the Law mocked Him among themselves {7}. "He saved others," They said, "but He can't save Himself! Let this Christ, the king of Israel, come down now from the cross, that We may see & believe. Early-on (see the Luke account below): Those crucified with Him also heaped insults on Him {7}.
- Luke 23:33-43 When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified Him, along with the criminals-- 1 on His right, the other on His left. Jesus said, FATHER, forgive them, for they know not what they are doing. Though scholars say that some early manuscripts do not have this last sentence, note that Jesus, when teaching about loving enemies (Matt 5:43-48; Luke 6:27-36), advised to pray for those who persecute/mistreat You. And they divided up His clothes by casting lots {18}. The people stood watching, & the rulers even sneered at Him {17}. They said, 'He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ of GOD, the Chosen One.' The soldiers also came up & mocked Him {7}. They offered Him wine & vinegar (again seemingly a fulfilled prophecy of Psa 69:21, but yet he has not said he was thirsty) & said, If You are the king of the Jews, save yourself. There was a written notice above Him, which read; This is the king of the Jews. Later: 1 of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at Him {7}: Aren't You the Christ? Save Yourself & Us! But the other criminal rebuked Him. 'Don't you fear GOD,' He said, 'since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.' Then He said, Jesus, remember Me when You come into Your kingdom. Jesus answered Him, I tell You the truth, today You will be with Me in paradise.
- John 19:18-27 (see PerJohn8 D.6.)
