Preparation Day events revisited: [22] 6.-10. above
Remember, all the revisited events below occurred on the Jewish Preparation Day-- the day before the Sabbath & the start of the Passover Feast.
6., the Lord's Supper was in the Jewish early evening (recall Mark 14:17 saying, When evening came; but remember the feet washing occurred during the evening meal, per John 13:1-30)-- i.e., all this in our present-day Thurs. early evening;
7., the teachings & prayers were in the Jewish later evening-- i.e., all this in our present-day Thurs. later evening;
8., the agony & betrayal were in the Jewish wee-hours of the morning-- i.e., all this in our present-day Good Fri. wee-hours of the morning;
9., the arrest & trial began in the Jewish very early of the morning (see Mark 15:1)-- i.e., all this in our present-day Good Fri. early morning;
10., the crucifixion & burial occurred in the Jewish morning & afternoon (Mark 15:25 says, It was the 3rd hour when They crucified Him; Mark 15:33-34,37 says, At the 6th hour darkness until the 9th; at the 9th hour, Jesus breathed His last)-- i.e., all this in our present-day Good Fri. morning & afternoon.

D. (cont'd) During the 5th time in/near Jerusalem
31. Peter's 1st - 3rd disownings (a rooster crowed) [22] 9. above
Recall we saw about Peter's 1st denial in PerJohn D.1., after Jesus entered the high priest's (Caiaphas') courtyard & went before Annas, the high priest's father-in-law (but before he went before Caiaphas); then that same topic covers the 2nd & 3rd denials after he went before Caiaphas
- Matt 26:69-75
1st denial
Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, Jesus having seen Annas, & a servant girl came to Him. 'You also were with Jesus of Galilee,' She said. But He denied it before Them all. 'I don't know what You're talking about,' He said.
2nd denial
Then He went out to the gateway, where another girl saw Him & said to the people there, 'This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.' He denied it again, with an oath: 'I don't know the man!'
3rd denial
After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter & said, Surely You are 1 of Them, for Your accent gives You away.' Then He began to call down curses on Himself & He swore to Them, 'I don't know the man!' Immediately a rooster crowed. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: Before the rooster crows, You will disown Me 3x. And He went outside & wept bitterly.
- Mark 14:66-72
1st denial
While Peter was below in the courtyard, 1 of the servant girls of the High Priest came by. When she saw Peter warming himself, She looked closely at Him. 'You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,' She said. But He denied it. 'I don't know or understand what you're talking about,' He said, & went out into the entryway (some early manuscripts have entryway & the rooster crowed).
2nd denial
When the servant girl saw Him, She said again to those standing around, 'This fellow is 1 of Them.' Again He denied it.
3rd denial
After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, 'Surely You are 1 of Them, for You are a Galilean. He began to call down curses on himself, & He swore to them, 'I don't know this man You're talking about.' Immediately the rooster crowed the 2nd time (some early manuscripts do not have the 2nd time). Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to Him: Before the rooster crows 2x (some early manuscripts do not have 2x) You will disown Me 3x. And He broke down & wept.
- Luke 22:54-65
1st denial
Then seizing Him, They led Him away & took Him into the house of the High Priest. Peter followed at a distance. But when They had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard & sat down together, Peter sat down with Them. A servant girl saw Him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at Him & said, 'This man was with Him.' But He denied it. 'Women, I don't know Him,' He said.
2nd denial
A little later someone else saw Him & said, 'You also are 1 of Them.' 'Man, I am not!' Peter replied.
3rd denial
About an hour later another asserted, 'Certainly this fellow was with Him, for He is a Galilean.' Peter replied, 'Man, I don't know what You're talking about!' Just as He was speaking, the rooster crowed. The Lord turned & looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to Him: Before the rooster crows today, You will disown Me 3x. And He went outside & wept bitterly. The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking & beating Him. Then They blindfolded Him & demanded, Prophesy! Who hit You? And They said many other insulting things to Him.
32. Jesus 1st handed over to, & answers, the Roman governor Pilate, whose jurisdiction was Judea [22] 9. above
- Matt 27:1-2,11-14 Early in the morning, all the chief priests & the elders of the people came to the decision to put Jesus to death. They bound Him, led Him away & handed Him over to Pilate, the governor. Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, & the governor asked Him, Are You the king of the Jews? Yes, it is as you say, Jesus replied. When He was accused by the chief priests & the elders, He gave no answer. Then Pilate asked Him, Don't You hear the testimony They are bringing against You? But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge-- to the great amazement of the governor.
- Mark 15:1-5 Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the Law & the whole Sanhedrin, reached a decision. They bound Jesus, led Him away & handed Him over to Pilate. Are You the king of the Jews? asked Pilate. Yes, it is as you say, Jesus replied. The chief priests accused Him of many things. So again Pilate asked Him, Aren't You going to answer? See how many things They are accusing You of. But Jesus still made no reply, & Pilate was amazed.
- Luke 22:66-71; 23:1-5 At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests & teachers of the Law, met together, & Jesus was led before Them. If You are the Christ, They said, tell Us. Jesus answered, If I tell You, You will not believe Me, & if I asked You, You would not answer. But from now on, the Son of man will be seated at the Right Hand of the Mighty GOD. They all asked, Are You then the Son of GOD? He replied, You are right in saying I am. Then They said, 'Why do We need any more testimony? We have heard it from His own lips.' Then the whole assembly rose & led Him off to Pilate. And They began to accuse Him, saying, 'We have found this man subverting Our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar & claims to be Christ, a king.' So Pilate asked Jesus, Are You the king of the Jews? Yes, it is as you say, Jesus replied. Then Pilate announced to the chief priests & the crowd, 'I find no basis for a charge against this man.' But They insisted, 'He stirs up the people all over Judea by His teaching. He started in Galilee & has come all the way here.'
- John 18:28-36 (see PerJohn8 D.2.)
33. Judas hanged himself [22] 9. above
- Matt 27:3-10 When Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that Jesus was condemned, He was seized with remorse & returned the 30 silver coins to the chief priests & the elders. 'I have sinned,' He said, 'for I have betrayed innocent blood.' 'What is that to Us?' They replied. 'That's Your responsibility.' So Judas threw the money into the temple & left. Then He went away & hanged himself. The chief priests picked up the coins & said, It is against the law to put this money in the treasury, since it is blood money.' So They decided to buy the potter's field as a burial place for foreigners. That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then what was spoken of by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled (Zec 11:12-13; also chronicled in Jer 19:1-13; 32:6-9): They took the 30 silver coins, the price set on Him by the people of Israel, & They used the money to buy the potter's field, as the Lord commanded Me. Now this is the 1st major discrepancy I've found: Acts 1:18-19 has it quite differently (on 2 accounts)-- though note that it is in parentheses in Scripture. The 2 major discrepancies: 1), it has Judas buying the field with the money; 2), it does not have Judas committing suicide by hanging himself, but rather those 2 verses are in parentheses & have, (...he fell headlong, his body burst open & all His intestines spilled out). Acts was written by Luke; the 2 verses in parentheses were inserted later into the original manuscript-- perhaps by Luke himself. BTW, the relatively few portions of Scripture that are in parentheses are hardly similar to the many, many annotated cross references & notes that are in the margins & bottoms of regular & study bibles-- these have been placed relatively recently by later scholars.
34. Jesus then sent to Herod by Pilate (Herod's jurisdiction was Galilee) [22] 9. above
- Matt
- Mark
- Luke 23:6-12 On hearing this, that He started in Galilee (as in the end of 32. above), Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean. When he learned that Jesus was under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time. When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see Him. From what he had heard about Him, he hoped to see Him perform some miracle. Instead: He plied Him with many questions, but Jesus gave no, not even 1, answer. Whereas: The chief priests & the teachers of the Law were standing there, vehemently accusing Him. Then Herod & his soldiers ridiculed & mocked Him. Dressing Him in an elegant robe, they sent Him back to Pilate. That day Herod & Pilate became friends-- before this they had been enemies.
