  11. Preparation Day events revisited (pts. 6-10 above)

    Remember, all the revisited pts. below occurred on the Jewish Preparation Day-- the day before the Sabbath & the start of the Passover Feast .

    pt. 6, the Lord's Supper was in the Jewish early evening (recall Mark 14:17 saying, When evening came; but remember the feet washing occurred before the meal, per John 13:1-30)-- i.e., all this in our present-day Thurs. early evening;

    pt. 7, the teachings & prayers were in the Jewish later evening-- i.e., all this in our present-day Thurs. later evening;

    pt. 8, the agony & betrayal were in the Jewish wee-hours of the morning-- i.e., all this in our present-day Good Fri. wee-hours of the morning;

    pt. 9, the arrest & trial began in the Jewish very early of the morning (see Mark 15:1)-- i.e., all this in our present-day Good Fri. early morning;

    pt. 10, the crucifixion & burial occurred in the Jewish morning & afternoon (Mark 15:25 says, It was the 3rd hour when They crucified Him; Mark 15:33-34,37 says, At the 6th hour darkness until the 9th; at the 9th hour, Jesus breathed His last)-- i.e., all this in our present-day Good Fri. morning & afternoon.

D. (cont'd) During the 5th time in/near Jerusalem

  26. Yet in Jerusalem: 'Peter, before the rooster crows' [22] above (6th pt.)

  • Matt
  • Mark
  • Luke 22:31-38 Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift You as wheat. But I have prayed for You, Simon, that Your faith may not fail. And when You have turned back, strengthen Your brothers. But He replied, Lord, I am ready to go with You to prison & to death. Jesus answered, I tell You, Peter, before the rooster crows today, You will deny 3x that You know Me. Then Jesus asked Them, When I sent You without purse, bag or sandals (see PerMtMkLk5 B.18.), did You lack anything? Nothing, They answered. He said to Them, But now if You have a purse, take it, & also a bag; & if You don't have a sword, sell Your cloak & buy 1 to defend yourselves. It is written, And He was numbered with the transgressors (Isa 53:12); & I tell You that this must be fulfilled in Me. Yes, what is written about Me is reaching its fulfillment. The disciples said, See, Lord, here are 2 swords. That is enough, He replied.

  27. Now on the Mount of Olives: 'Peter (reminded), before the rooster crows' [22] above (7th pt.)

  • Matt 26:31-35 Then Jesus told Them, This very night You will fall away on account of Me, for it is written: I will strike the shepherd, & the sheep of the flock will be scattered (Zec 13:7). But after I have risen, I will go ahead of You into Galilee. Peter, the same Peter that claimed he needed to wash Jesus' feet, replied, Even if all others fall away on account of You, I never will-- thinking he was above, or not aware of, the prophecy I tell You the truth, Jesus answered, this very night, before the rooster crows, You will disown Me 3x-- Peter not understanding that God wrote the script, that his part was not to decide what to do, but rather to play the role (same rationale why Judas is somewhere in the foundation of the mountain. But Peter declared, Even if I have to die with You, I will never disown You. And all the disciples said the same thing.
  • Mark 14:27-31 You will all fall away, Jesus told Them, for it is written: I will strike the shepherd, & all the sheep will be scattered. But after I have risen, I will go ahead of  You into Galilee. Peter declared, Even if all fall away, I will not-- I will not be scattered! I tell You the truth, Jesus answered, today during these 24 hrs.-- yes, tonight -- the rooster crows 2x (not in some earlier manuscripts) You yourself will disown Me 3x. But Peter insisted emphatically, Even if I have to die with You, I will never disown You. And all the others said the same.
  • Luke 22:39 This single verse is the only mention in Luke that Jesus went across the Kidron Valley to the Mt. of Olives-- there is no accounting of any teachings there. Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, & His disciples followed Him.

  28. Jesus prayed at Gethsemane; ''Watch & pray' [22] above (8th pt.) Note that John covered 3 prayers-- done while still across the Kidron Valley on the Mt. of Olives, after 6 teachings (see PerJohn7 B.5.-7.). But here we have some agony-prayers, done when back across the Kidron Valley, in Gethsemane (SE of Jerusalem, in what is now the Lower City of Jerusalem-- see MinChroAltern about another possible location). All prayers here were followed immediately by the betrayal, as Matt 26:47, Mark 14:43 & Luke 22:47 have the betrayal taking place While/Just as He was still speaking:

  • Matt 26:36-46 Then Jesus went with His disciples to a place called Gethsemane, & He said to Them, Sit here while I go over there & pray. He took Peter & the 2 sons of Zebedee, James & John [see PerMtMkLk2 B.5.(Addendum, Matt & Mark)], along with Him, & He began to be sorrowful & troubled. Then He said to Them, My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here & keep watch with Me. Going a little farther, He fell with His face to the ground & prayed, My FATHER, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from Me. Yet not as I will, but as YOU will. Then He returned to His 3 disciples & found Them sleeping. Could You not keep watch with Me for 1 hour? He asked the 1, Peter. Watch & also pray so You will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak. He went away a 2nd time & prayed, My Father,  if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may YOUR Will be done. When He came back, He again found Them sleeping. because Their eyes were heavy. So He left Them & went away 1x more & prayed the 3rd time, saying the same thing. Then He returned to the disciples & said to Them, Are You still sleeping & resting? Look, the hour is near, & the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let Us go! Here comes My betrayer. Note that their lack of watching did not effect Jesus in the least-- rather it spoke volumes to them (& us) about the value of prayer (not to presume we are strong, that our spirit is stronger than our bodies).
  • Mark 14:32-42 They went to a place called Gethsemane, & Jesus said to His disciples , Sit here while I pray. He took Peter, James & John along with Him, & He began to be deeply distressed & troubled. My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death, He said to Them. Stay here & keep watch. Going a little farther, He fell to the ground & prayed that if possible the hour might pass from Him. Abba, FATHER, He said, everything is possible for You. Take this cup from Me. Yet not what I will, but as YOU will. Then He returned to His disciples & found Them sleeping. Simon, He said to Peter, are You asleep? Could You not keep watch for 1 hour? Watch & pray so that You will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak. Once more He went away & prayed the same thing. When He came back, He again found Them sleeping. because Their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to Him. Returning the 3rd time, He said to Them, Are You still sleeping & resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let Us go! Here comes My betrayer.
  • Luke 22:40-46 Note that above there was 1 v. that covered Jesus going to the Mt. of Olives; now we have him back across the Kidron Valley, in Gethsemane:  On reaching that place, He said to Them, Pray that You will not fall into temptation. He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond Them, knelt down & prayed, Father, if YOU are willing, take this cup from Me; yet not My will, but YOURS be done. An angel from Heaven appeared to Him & strengthened Him. And being in anguish, He prayed more earnestly, & His sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. When He rose from prayer & went back to the disciples, He found Them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. Why are You sleeping? He asked Them. Get up & pray so that You will not fall into temptation.

  29. Also at Gethsemane--  Jesus betrayed & deserted [22] above (8th pt.)

  • Matt 26:47-56 While He was still speaking to his disciples about prayer, Judas Iscariot, 1 of the 12, arrived. With Him was a large crowd armed with swords & clubs, sent from the chief priests & the elders of the people. Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: 'The 1 I kiss is the man; arrest Him.' Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, Greetings, Rabbi! & kissed Him. Jesus, yet calling him friend, replied, Friend, do what You come for. Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus & arrested Him. With that, 1 of Jesus' companions [Simon Peter-- see PerJohn7 C.1.] reached for His sword, drew it out & struck the servant, Malchus,  of the high priest cutting off His right ear. Put Your sword back in its place, Jesus said to Him, for all who physically/offensively draw the sword will die by the sword-- that sword is meant for harm. This is hardly the same as spiritually/repeatedly using the sword of the Spirit, the Word of GOD-- see Ephe 6:17; Hebr 4:12, BTW, that drawing can be made-to-be a reflexive reaction by meditating on & reusing it, much as handling driving on ice becomes 2nd nature by practicing the teaching. BTW, note that the Luke account below has Jesus healing the servant. Do You think I cannot call on My FATHER, & He will at once put at My disposal more than 12 legions of angel? But how then would the multiple Scriptures be fulfilled that it must happen in this way? See, you were sleeping, but I already acquiesed in prayer 3x to his will! At that time Jesus said to the crowd, Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords & clubs to capture Me? Recently: Every day when I was in Jerusalem I sat in the Temple courts, & you did not arrest Me. But this has all taken place that the writings of the Prophets might be fulfilled-- e.g., Isa 53:7-12); Zec 13:7. Then all the disciples deserted Him & fled.
  • Mark 14:43-52 Just as He was speaking, Judas Iscariot, 1 of the 12, appeared. With Him was a crowd armed with swords & clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the Law, & the elders. Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: 'The 1 I kiss is the man; arrest Him & lead Him away under guard.' Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, Rabbi! & kissed Him. The men seized Jesus & arrested Him. Then 1 of Those standing near drew His sword & struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off His ear. Am I leading a rebellion, said Jesus, that you have come out with sword & clubs to capture Me? Every day I was with you, teaching in the Temple courts, & you did not arrest Me. But the Scripture must be fulfilled. Then everyone deserted Him & fled. A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.
  • Luke 22:47-53 While He was still speaking a crowd came up, & the man who was called Judas, 1 of the 12, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss Him, but Jesus asked Him, Judas, are You betraying the Son of man with a kiss? When Jesus' followers saw what was going to happen, They said, Lord, should We strike with Our swords-- recall that we just saw saw, in D.6. above, that they were instructed to carry swords (though among the 12, 2 swords is enough) for the purpose of defense? And 1 of Them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off His right ear. But Jesus answered, No more of this! And He touched the man's ear & healed Him. Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the Temple guard, & the elders, who had come for Him, Am I leading a rebellion, that You have come with swords & clubs? Every day I was with You in the Temple courts, & You did not lay a hand on Me. But this is Your hour-- when darkness reigns.
  • John 18:1-11 (see PerJohn7 C.1)

  30. In Jerusalem, before Caiaphas, the high priest [22] above (9th pt.) This was after Jesus was taken to Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas (see PerJohn7 D.1.-- which includes Peter's 3 denials)

  • Matt 26:57-68 Those who had arrested Jesus took Him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of the Law & the elders had assembled. But Peter followed Him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest.. He entered the courtyard & sat down with the guards to see the outcome. The chief priests & the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that They could put Him to death. But They could not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally 2 came forward & declared, "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy this Temple of GOD & rebuild it in 3 days'-- this was false, since Jesus actually said, 'Destroy this Temple, & I will raise it again in 3 days (see Min'tryBegins A.3. & PerJohn1 A.1.; note that v. 21 says, the Temple He had spoken of was His body)." Then the high priest stood up & said to Jesus, Are You not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against You? But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to Him, I charge You under oath by the Living GOD: tell Us if You are the Christ, the Son of GOD. Yes, it is as You say, Jesus replied. But I say to all of You: In the future You will see the Son of man sitting at the Right Hand of the Mighty ONE & coming on the clouds of Heaven. Then the high priest was exasperated & tore His clothes & said, 'He has spoken blasphemy! Why do We even need any more witnesses? Look, now You have heard the blasphemy yourselves. What do You think?' 'He is worthy of death,' They answered. Then They spit in His face & struck Him with Their fists. Others slapped Him & said, 'Prophesy to Us, Christ. Who hit You?'
  • Mark 14:53-65 They took Jesus to the high priest, & all the chief priests, elders & teachers of the Law came together. Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There He sat with the guards & warmed himself at the fire. The chief priests & the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that They could put Him to death, but They did not find any. Many testified falsely against Him, but Their statements did not agree. Then some stood up & gave this false testimony against Him: "We heard Him say, 'I will destroy this man-made Temple & in 3 days will build another, not made by man.' " Yet even then Their testimony did not agree. Then the high priest stood up before Them & asked Jesus, Are You not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against You? But Jesus remained silent & gave no answer. Again the high priest asked Him, Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One? I am, said Jesus. And You will see the Son of man sitting at the Right Hand of the Mighty ONE & coming on the clouds of Heaven. The high priest tore His clothes. 'Why do We need any more witnesses?' He asked. 'You have heard the blasphemy. What do You think?' They all condemned Him as worthy of death. Then some began to spit at Him They blindfolded Him, struck Him with Their fists, & said, 'Prophesy!' And the guards took Him & beat Him.
