Preparation Day events revisited (pts. 6-10 above)
Remember, all the revisited pts. below occurred on the Jewish Preparation Day-- the day before the Sabbath & the start of the Passover Feast .
pt. 6, the Lord's Supper was in the Jewish early evening (recall Mark 14:17 saying, When evening came; but remember the feet washing occurred before the meal, per John 13:1-30)-- i.e., all this in our present-day Thurs. early evening;
pt. 7, the teachings & prayers were in the Jewish later evening-- i.e., all this in our present-day Thurs. later evening;
pt. 8, the agony & betrayal were in the Jewish wee-hours of the morning-- i.e., all this in our present-day Good Fri. wee-hours of the morning;
pt. 9, the arrest & trial began in the Jewish very early of the morning (see Mark 15:1)-- i.e., all this in our present-day Good Fri. early morning;
pt. 10, the crucifixion & burial occurred in the Jewish morning & afternoon (Mark 15:25 says, It was the 3rd hour when They crucified Him; Mark 15:33-34,37 says, At the 6th hour darkness until the 9th; at the 9th hour, Jesus breathed His last)-- i.e., all this in our present-day Good Fri. morning & afternoon.

D. (cont'd) During the 5th time in/near Jerusalem
21. Jesus on the Mount of Olives (or in Bethany); plot to arrest & kill Jesus in Jerusalem [22] above (3rd or 4th pt.)
- Matt 26:1-5 When Jesus had finished saying all these things, He said to His disciples, As You know, the Passover is 2 days away-- & the Son of man will be handed over to be crucified. Then the chief priests & the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest in Jerusalem, whose name was Caiaphas, & They plotted to arrest Jesus in some way & kill Him. 'But not during the Passover Feast-- otherwise known as the Feast of Unleavened Bread (see the Luke acct. below),' They said, 'or there may be a riot among the people-- he was killed during the daytime of the Preparation Day (the Passover began that evening).'
- Mark 14:1-2 Now the Passover & the Feast of Unleavened Bread were only 2 days away, & the chief priests & teachers of the Law were looking for some sly way to arrest Jesus & kill Him. 'But not during the Feast,'They said, 'or the people may riot.'
- Luke 22:1-2 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, & the chief priests & teachers of the Law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for They were afraid of the people.
22. Jesus' head anointed in Simon the Leper's home in Bethany [22] above (4th pt.)-- this is probably not the same home of the time, 6 days before the Passover, when Jesus' feet were anointed (see PerJohn5 C.1.). Then it was not specified which home it was, though Lazarus' sister, Martha, hosted it (but Lazarus' other sister, Mary, did the anointing):
- Matt 26:6-13 While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of a man known as Simon the Leper, a woman came up to Him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which She poured on His head as He was reclining at the table. When the disciples saw this, They were indignant, 'Why this waste, woman?' They asked.. 'This perfume could have been sold at a high price & the money given to the poor.' Aware of this, Jesus said to Them, Why are You bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to Me. The poor You will always have with You, but You will not always have Me. When She poured this perfume on My body, She did it to prepare Me for burial. I tell You the truth, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what She has done will also be told, in memory of Her.
- Mark 14:3-9 While He was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of a man known as Simon the leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar & poured the perfume on His head. Some of those present were saying indignantly to 1 another, 'Why this waste of perfume? It could have been sold for more than a year's wages (300 denarii) & the money given to the poor.' And they rebuked Her harshly. Leave Her alone, said Jesus. Why are You bothering Her? She has done a beautiful thing to Me. The poor You will always have with You, & you can help them any time you want. But You will not always have Me. She did what She could. She poured perfume on My body beforehand to prepare for My burial. I tell You the truth, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what She has done will also be told, in memory of Her.
23. Judas Iscariot watched for an opportunity to hand Him over [22] above (4th pt.)-- note that it was specifically Judas Iscariot. In PerMtMkLk2 B.5. (Addendum near the bottom of B.5.) we saw that Matt, Mark, Luke & Acts completely agreed on 10 of the 12 disciples-- of course Acts left-off Simon Iscariot, but Matt & Mark listed another Simon (son of James), whereas Luke & Acts listed Thaddaeus:
- Matt 26:14-16 Then 1 of the 12-- the 1 called Judas Iscariot --went to the chief priests in Jerusalem (see Luke below) & asked, 'What are You willing to give Me if I hand Him over to You?' So They counted out for Him 30 silver coins. From then on Judas Iscariot watched for an opportunity to hand Him over.
- Mark 14:10-11 Then Judas Iscariot, 1 of the12, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to Them. They were delighted to hear this & promised to give Him money. So He watched for an opportunity to hand Him over.
- Luke 22:3-6 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, 1 of the 12. And Judas went to the chief priests & the officers of the Temple guard & discussed with Them how He might betray Jesus. They were delighted & agreed to give Him money. He consented, & watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to Them when no crowd was present.
24. The day before the Preparation Day (on our Thurs.; before the 1st-day, "Good Friday")-- location of the Lord's Supper arranged for [22] above (5th pt.)-- we shall see several events occurring on the Preparation Day (the sacrifice of the Passover Lamb on "Good Friday")-- from the Lord's Supper through the "Crucifixion", etc. Here we see arrangements being made for this subsequent Preparaton Day (Jesus did not get to celebrate the Passover Feast beyond this). We 1st saw the following time lines (calendars) mentioned in PerMtMkLk16 C.5., where it was pointed out that there is no "contradiction" when some gospels say he would arise on the 3rd day, whereas others say he would arise after 3 days. Fact is, several scriptures were pointed out, (e.g., saying specifically he was crucified in the daytime hours-- recall the sun didn't shine from the 6th to the 9th hour), but I see I never got around to pointing out that this "major conflict (in-the-eyes of some), was likely a minor discrepancy arising as the scripture were translated from Greek to English. I see I also neglected to draw simple time lines. In the time lines below you see that the the crucifixion was between noon & evening of the 1st day, which was already established in PerMtMkLk16. However, note that both calendars:have the resurrection occurring between midnight & morning on the 3rd day-- this is in keeping with all the gospels. E.g., note John 20:1, which says, Early on the 1st day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb & saw that the stone had been removed form the entrance;

- Matt 26:17-19 On the 1st day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus & asked, Where do You want Us to make preparations for You to eat the Passover? He replied, Go into the city to a certain man & tell Him, "The Teacher says: 'My appointed time is near, I am going to celebrate the Passover with My disciple at Your house.' " So the disciples did as Jesus had directed Them & prepared [began preparing for] the Passover.
- Mark 14:12-16 On the 1st day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb-- thus Jesus is called the Passover lamb (see 1stCor 5:7), Jesus' disciples asked Him, where do You want Us to go & make preparations for You to eat the Passover? So He sent 2 of His disciples, telling Them, Go into the city, & a man carrying a jar of water will meet You. Follow Him. Say to the owner of the house He enters, "The Teacher asks: 'Where is My guest room, where I may eat the Passover with My disciple?' He will show You a large upper room, furnished & ready. Make preparations for Us there. The disciples went into the city & found things just as Jesus had told Them. So They prepared [began preparing for] the Passover.
- Luke 22:7-13 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. Jesus sent Peter & John, saying, Go & make preparations for Us to eat the Passover. Where do You want Us to prepare for it? They asked. He replied, As You enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet You. Follow Him to the house that He enters, & say to the owner of the house, "The Teacher asks: 'Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with My disciple?' He will show You a large upper room, all furnished. Make preparations there. They left & found things just as Jesus had told Them. So They prepared [began preparing for] the Passover.
25. The beginning of the Preparation Day-- The Lord's Supper (after the feet washing) [22] above (6th pt.)-- sometimes called the Lord's Supper; sometimes the Last Supper-- of course, this was Jesus' Last Supper before being crucified, but in Luke 22:20 & John 21:20 we see just Supper. BTW, more about it later {see PerJohn6 D.1.), but note that in keeping with the spirit-of-the-Law replacing the traditions-of-the-Law, the preparation of the spotless Lamb of GOD did not necessitate the removal of fat, etc.:
- Matt 26:20-30 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the 12. And while They were eating, He said, I tell You the truth, 1 of You will betray Me. They were very sad & began to say to Him 1 after the other, Surely not I, Lord? Jesus replied, The 1 who has dipped His hand into the bowl with Me will betray Me. The Son of man will go just as it is written about Him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of man! It would be better for Him if He had not been born. Then Judas Iscariot, the 1 who would betray Him, said, Surely not I, Rabbi? Jesus answered, Yes, it is You. While They were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks & broke it, & gave it to His disciples, saying, Take & eat; this is My body. Then He took the cup, gave thanks & offered it to Them [see the Mark acct. below], saying, Drink from it, all of You. This is My Blood of the New Covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell You, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with You in My FATHER'S Kingdom. When They had sung a hymn, They went out to the Mount of Olives.
- Mark 14:17-26 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the 12. While They were reclining at the table eating, He said, I tell You the truth, 1 of You will betray Me-- 1 who is eating with Me. They were saddened, & 1 by 1 They said to Him, surely not I. It is 1 of the 12, He replied, 1 who dips bread into the bowl with Me. The Son of man will go just as it is written about Him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of man! It would be better for Him if He had not been born. While They were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks & broke it, & gave it to His disciples, saying, Take it; this is My body. Then He took the cup, gave thanks & offered it to Them, & They all drank from it Recall (PerMtMkLk16 C.6.) when the mother of Zebedee's sons (James & John) requested of Jesus, Grant that 1 may sit at Your right & the other at Your left in Your kingdom; recall Jesus saying to them, You will indeed drink from My cup, but to sit at My right or left is not for Me to grant. The lesson is that while all ate of the Bread of Life & drank the Blood of the Covenant at salvation & then, 1 chose to later!. Christians who do now walk/live as he guides will indeed sit in his presence-- but where? But why consider where the grain of sand will be-- it's sure to be on the mountain! Wisdom is eating/drinking now! Ah, but you say Judas ate the bread & drank from the cup. Well, who knows, perhaps he'll be somewhere in the foundation of the mountain-- O.K., wisdom is continually eating & drinking! About the contents of the cup in particular: This is My Blood of the New Covenant, which is poured out for many, He said to Them. I tell You the truth, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it anew in Kingdom of GOD. When They had sung a hymn, They went out to the Mount of Olives.
- Luke 22:14-30 When the hour came, Jesus & His apostles reclined at the table. And He said to Them about His body, the Bread of Life, I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with You before I suffer. For I tell You, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the Kingdom of GOD. After taking the cup with the Blood of the Covenant, He gave thanks & said, Take this & divide it among You. For I tell You, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the Kingdom of GOD comes. And He took bread, gave thanks & broke it, & gave it to Them, saying, This is My body given for You; do this in remembrance of Me. In the same way, after the supper, He took the cup, saying, This cup is the New Covenant in [& within is] My blood, which is poured out for You. But the hand of Him who is going to betray Me is with MINE on that table. The Son of man will go as it has been decreed, but woe to that man who betrays Him. They began to question among themselves which of Them it might be who would do this. Also a dispute arose among Them as to which of Them was considered to be greatest. Jesus said to Them, The king of the Gentiles lord it over them; & those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. But You are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among You should be like the youngest, & the 1 who rules like the 1 who serves. For who is greater, the 1 who at the table or the 1 who serves? Is it not hte 1 who is at the table? But I am among You as 1 who serves. You are those who have stood by Me in My trials. And I confer on You a kingdom, just as My FATHER has conferred 1 on Me, so that You may eat & drink at My table in My kingdom & sit on thrones judging the 12 tribes of Israel. God ordained the arrangement of his table before time was-- the key factor was the degree of perpetual servanthood in his son's kingdom.
