C. (cont'd) After the 4th time in Jerusalem
4. Parable: 'The last will be 1st; the 1st will be last' [21] above-- Note that the last topic (PerMtMkLk15 C.3.) had that some will receive 100x (or many times more) in this present age-- the difference will likely depend both on how much they did/continued-to leave behind, & also on their actions, in-actions & re-actions in following. But here we have an entirely different subject-- all were called to work, either all day, or for the remainder of the day. Those who worked all day received the same total pay as those who worked only the last hour-- eternal life in the age to come. But due to envy...
- Matt 20:1-16 For the Kingdom of GOD is like a landowner who went out early in the morning into the marketplace to hire men to work in his vineyard. He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day & sent them into his vineyard. Around the 3rd hour he went out & saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. He told them, 'You also go & work in my vineyard, & I will pay you whatever is right.' So they went. He went out again about the 6th hour & the 9th hour & did the same thing. About the 11th hour he went out & found still others standing around. He asked them, 'Why have you been stabding here all day long doing nothing?' 'Beacause no 1 has hired us,' they answered. He said to them, 'You also go & work in my vineyard.' When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, 'Call the workers & pay them theirages, beginning with the last ones hired & going on to the 1st.' The workers who were hired about the 11th hour came & each received a denarius. So when those came who were hired 1st, they expected to receive more. But each 1 of them also received a denarius. When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner. 'Those men who were hired last worked only 1 hour,' they said, '& you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work & the heat of the day.' But he answered them, 'Friends, I am not being unfair to you. Didn't you agree to work for a denarius? Take your pay & go I want to give the man who was hired last the same as I gave you. Don't I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous/ So the last will be 1st, & the 1st will be last.

5. Jesus' 3rd telling of his death & resurrection [21] above-- this is the 3rd telling (after 4th Feast); the 1st telling (before the journey to Jerusalem for the 3rd Feast) was recorded in PerMtMkLk8 B.32.; the 2nd telling (during the journey for the 3rd Feast) was in PerMtMkLk9 B.35. The seeming contradiction below (to some anyway, who have claimed nearly 1,000 contradictions in the Bible), about Jesus arising on the 3rd day "vs." after 3 days, will be resolved now. We know that Jesus was on the cross beginning soon after the 6th daylight hour after dawn-- for John 19:14-16 says that Pilate handed him over about the 6th hour, & Matt 27:45 says, From the 6th hour until the 9th hour darkness came . We also know from Matt 27:46-50 that very shortly after the 9th hour Jesus gave up His spirit. It's important to remember that the Jewish 24-hour day was 12 hours of darkness, from evening until dawn, followed by 12 hours of light, from dawn until evening. Thus by their reckoning Jesus was crucified late on their 6th day (the 6th day was their day of Preparation; the 7th day was their Sabbath), but in the 1st half of the afternoon of our Good Friday. I.e., both the Preparation Day & "Good Friday" were the 1st day, both the Sabbath & Sat. were the 2nd day, & both their Sun. & ours were the 3rd day--Jesus said on the Preparation Day, 'He will arise on the 3rd day (Matt 16:21; 17:23; 20:19; Luke 9:22; 18:33). He also said on the day before the Preparation Day, 'After 3 days He will rise (Mark 8:31; 9:32),' & '3 days later He will rise (Mark 10:34).'
- Matt 20:17-19 Now as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, He took the 12 disciples aside & said to Them, We are going up to Jerusalem, & the Son of man will be betrayed to the chief priests & the teachers of the Law. They will condemn Him to death & will turn Him over to the Gentiles to be mocked & flogged & crucified. On the 3rd day He will be raised to life!
- Mark 10:32-34 They were on Their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, & the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid. Again He took the 12 aside & told Them what was going to happen to Him. We are going up to Jerusalem, He said, & the Son of man will be betrayed to the chief priests & the teachers of the Law. They will condemn Him to death & will hand Him over to the gentiles, who will mock Him & spit on Him, flog Him & kill Him. 3 days later He will rise.
- Luke 18:31-34 Jesus took the 12 aside & told The, We are going up to Jerusalem, & everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of man will be fulfilled. He will be handed over to the Gentiles. They will mock Him, insult Him, spit on Him, flog Him, & kill Him. on the 3rd day He will rise again. The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from Them, & They did not know what He was talking about.
6. To Zebedee's sons; 'You will drink from My cup'; great vs. 1st [21] above
- Matt 20:20-28 Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came to Jesus with Her sons &, kneeling down, asked a favor of Him. What is it You want? He asked. She said, Grant that 1 of these 2 sons of Mine may sit at YOUR Right & the other at YOUR Left in YOUR Kingdom. Turning to the sons: You don't know what You are asking, Jesus said to Them [ the disciples] . Can You drink the full cup I am going to drink? We can, They answered. Jesus said to Them, You will indeed drink from MY Cup, but to sit at MY Right or Left is not for ME to grant. These places already belong to Those for whom they have been prepared by My FATHER-- probably Moses & Elijah (recall the Mount of Transfiguration in PerMtMkLk8 B.33.). When the 10 other disciples heard this, They were indignant with the 2 brothers. Jesus called Them all together & said, You know that the Roman rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them Gentiles, & their own high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with You 12. Instead, whoever wants to become great among You must be Your servant, & whoever wants to be 1st must be Your slave-- just as the Son of man did not come to be served, but to serve, & to give His life as a ransom for many.
- Mark 10: 35-45 Then James & John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Him. Teacher, They said, We want YOU to do for Us whatever We ask. What do You want ME to do for You? He asked. They replied, Let 1 of Us sit at YOUR Right & the other at YOUR Left in YOUR Glory. You don't know what You are asking, Jesus said. Can You drink of the cup I drink in full or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with? We can, They answered. Jesus said to Them, You will drink of the cup I drink & be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, but to sit at MY Right or Left is not for ME to grant. These places belong to Those for whom they have been prepared. When the 10 heard about this, They became indignant with James & John. Jesus called Them together & said, You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, & their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with You. Instead, whoever wants to become great among You must be Your servant, & whoever wants to be 1st must be slave of all. For even the Son of man did not come to be served, but to serve, & to give His life as a ransom for many.
- Luke
7. As Jesus & His disciples approached Jericho, a blind man [21] above (2nd pt.)-- there are some minor discrepancies below: 2x it is said that Jesus was leaving Jericho (but note the next topic); 2x It is said that there was 1 blind man
- Matt 20:29-34 As Jesus & His disciples were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed Him. 2 blind men were sitting by the roadside, & when They heard that Jesus was going by, They shouted, Lord, Son of David, have mercy on Us! The crowd rebuked Them & told Them to be quiet, but They shouted all the louder, Lord, Son of David, have mercy on Us! Jesus stopped & called Them. What do You want Me to do for You? He asked. Lord, They answered, We want Our sight. Jesus had compassion on Them & touched Their eyes. Immediately They received Their sight & followed Him.
- Mark 10:46-52 Then They came to Jericho. As Jesus & His disciple, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (that is, the son of Timaeus), was sitting by the roadside begging. When He heard that that it was Jesus of Nazareth, He began to shout, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on Me! Many rebuked Him & told Him to be quiet, but He shouted all the more, Son of David, have mercy on Me! Jesus stopped & said, Call Him. So they called to the blind man, 'Cheer up! On Your feet! He's calling You.' Throwing His cloak aside, He jumped to His feet & came to Jesus. What do You want Me to do for You? Jesus asked Him. Rabbi, I want to see. Go, said Jesus, Your faith has healed You. Immediately, neither was mud & saliva put on the man's eyes, nor did he have to wash in the Pool of Siloam (see PerJohn3 C.5.), He received His sight & followed Jesus along the road.
- Luke 18:35-48 As Jesus approached Jericho a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. When He heard the crowd go by, He asked what was happening. They tolf Him, 'Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.' He called out, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on Me! Those disciples who led the way rebuked Him & told Him to be quiet, but He shouted all the more-- reminiscent of the parable, 'the woman who keeps bothering (see PerMtMkLk14 B.76.),' Son of David, have mercy on Me! Jesus stopped & ordered the man to be brought to Him. When He came near, Jesus asked Him, What do You want Me to do for You? Lord, I want to see, He replied. Jesus said to Him, Receive Your sight; Your faith has healed You. Immediately He received His sight & followed Jesus, praising GOD. When all the people saw it, They also praised GOD.
8. Jesus entered Jericho; he granted salvation to Zacchaeus son of Abraham [21] above (2nd pt.)
- Matt
- Mark
- Luke 19:1-10 Jesus entered Jericho & was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; He was a chief tax collector & was wealthy. He wanted to see who this Jesus was, but being a short man He could not, because of the crowd. So He ran ahead & climbed a sycamore-fig tree (plentiful in the foothills, per 1stKi 10:27) to see Him, since Jesus was coming that way. When Jesus reached the spot, He looked up & said to Him, Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at Your house today. So He came down at once & welcomed Him gladly. All the people saw this going to the house & began to mutter, ' He has gone to be the guest of a "sinner." ' But Zacchaeus stood up & said to the Lord, Look, Lord! Here & now I give half of My possessions to the poor, & if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back 4x the amount. Jesus said to Him, Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man came to seek & to save what was lost.
