C. After the 4th time in Jerusalem

  1. 'Divorce & re-marriage; eunuchs (in Matt only)' [21] above (1st pt.)-- note that this skips over [19] & [20], which was in mid-fall, when he was in Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles & the Feast of Dedication (as we saw in PerJohn2 C.- PerJohn4 B.

  • Matt 19:1-12 When Jesus had finished saying these things, He left Galilee & passing through Samaria, he went into the region of Judea to the other side of the Jordan River. Large crowds followed Him, & He healed them there. Some Pharisees came to test Him. Note that Jesus responds with a 3-part big-picture of how to conduct-in-life; the 1st 2 deal with the Pharisees' questions, & speak to a possible corruption-through-time; the 3rd part deals with a disciples' statement, & tells how some avoid this possible corruption (which certainly is not to say they avoid all possible corruptions & have no need of a Savior):
    • They asked, Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any & every reason? Jesus answered by 1st talking about marriage: Haven't You read, He replied, that at the beginning of time as we know it the Creator 'made them male & female,' & said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father & mother & be united to his wife, & the 2 will become 1 flesh'? So they are no longer 2, but 1. Therefore what GOD has joined together, let man not separate.
    • Why then, they asked, did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce & send her away? Now Jesus does speak to divorce: Jesus replied, Moses permitted You to divorce Your wives because Your hearts were hard. But it was not that way from the beginning. I tell You that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, & marries another woman, he commits adultery.
    • The disciples said to Him, If this is the situation between a husband & wife, it is better not to marry. Jesus replied, Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given. For some are eunuchs [celibates] because they were born that way-- having no interest in marriage from birth; others were made that way by man-- not allowed to marry; others have renounced marriage because of [for the sake of] the kingdom of Heaven-- having chosen/committed to not marry. The 1 who can accept this should accept it-- no matter the opinion of the crowds!
  • Mark 10:1-12 Jesus then left that place & went into the region of Judea & across the Jordan.. Again crowds of people came to Him, & as was His custom, He taught them. Some Pharisees came & tested Him by asking, Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife? What did Moses command You? He replied. They said, Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce & send her away. It was because Your hearts were hard that Moses wrote You this Law, Jesus replied. But at the beginning of creation GOD 'made them male & female.' 'For this reason a man will leave his father & mother & be united to his wife, & the 2 will become 1 flesh.' So they are no longer 2, but 1. Therefore what GOD has joined together, let man not separate. When They were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. He answered, Anyone who divorces his wife & marries another woman commits adultery against her. And vice versa if she divorces her husband & marries another, she commits adultery.
  • Luke

  2. 'Let the little children (babies) come-- the Kingdom of GOD belongs to such' [21] above

  • Matt 19:13-15 Then little children were brought to Jesus for Him to place His hands on them & pray for them. But the disciples rebuked those who brought them. Jesus said, Let the little children come to Me, & do not hinder them, for the Kingdom of GOD belongs to such as these. When He had placed His hands on them, He went on from there.
  • Mark 10:13-16 People were bringing little children to Jesus to have Him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, He was indignant. He said to Them, Let the little children come to Me, & do not hinder them, for the Kingdom of GOD belongs to such as these. I tell You the truth, anyone who will not receive the Kingdom of GOD like a little child will never enter it. And He took the children in His arms, put His hands on them & blessed them.
  • Luke 18:15-17 People were also bringing babies to Jesus to have Him touch them. When the disciples saw this, They rebuked them. But Jesus called the children to Him & said, Let the little children come to Me, & do not hinder them, for the Kingdom of GOD belongs to such as these. I tell You the truth, anyone who will not receive the Kingdom of GOD like a little child will never enter it.

  3. 'Many who are 1st will be last; many who are last will be 1st' [21] above

  • Matt 19:16-30 Now a young, wealthy man came up to Jesus & asked, Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life? Why do you ask Me what is good? Jesus replied-- purposing to underscore that he was from God. There is only ONE who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the 6 commandments. Which ones? the man inquired. Jesus replied, 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father & mother, & love your neighbor as yourself.' Some points of interest:
    1. A minor 1-- in Matt 5:43 Jesus said, "You have heard that it was said, 'Love Your neighbor, & "hate" Your enemy.' " It was pointed out (in PSALM 83 Lev) that, in the portion of O.T. we have, it was only said 2x that the Israelites were to "hate" enemies (both times it was Moses speaking): [1] the Israelites were told, when they were about to enter Canaan (cross the Jordan), be careful, or you will be enticed to turn away & worship other gods (Deu 11:16)'; [2] later  (more on the order of "hate"), we have, No Ammonite or Moabite or any of his descendants may enter the Assembly of the LORD, even down only to the 10th generation. Do not seek a treaty of friendship with them as long as You live in 1 of those generations (Deu 23:3,6)': Actually, following this we have a 3rd instruction-- Do not abhor an Edomite; Do not abhor an Egyptian. The 3rd generation of them may enter the Assembly of the LORD (Deu 23:7-8);
    2. More important-- you might have noticed above that Jesus only covered what's been called "the relational commandments (another 1 of those ideas I picked up somewhere along-the-line; see the 5th through the 10th commandments in Exo 20:12-17)." Later we shall see him speaking of these 2 categories: Love the LORD Your GOD; Love Your neighbor-- and goes on to say, All the Law & the Prophets hang on theses 2 commandments {Matt  22:37-40).

All these I have kept , the young man said. What do I still lack? Jesus answered, If you want to be perfect , Go, sell your possessions & give to the poor, & You will have treasure in Heaven. Then come, follow Me. When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. Then Jesus said to His disciples, I tell You the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of Heaven. Again I tell You, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of GOD. When the disciples heard this, They were greatly astonished & asked, Who then can be saved? Jesus looked at Them, doubters & said, With man this is impossible, but with GOD all things are possible. Peter answered Him, We have left all thing to follow You! What then will there be for Us? Jesus said to Them, I tell You the truth, at the renewal of all things, when the SON of man sits on HIS Glorious Throne, You who have followed Me will also sit on 12 thrones, judging the 12 tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for MY Sake will receive now 100x as much & will inherit eternal life. The Luke account includes wife. But many who are 1st will be last, & many who are last will be 1st.

  • Mark 10:17-31 As Jesus started on His way, a man ran up to Him & fell on his knees before Him, Good teacher, he asked, what must I do to inherit eternal life? Why do you call me good? Jesus answered, No 1 is good except GOD Alone. You know the 6 "relational" commandments: 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud (expressed as love your neighbor as yourself above), honor Your father & mother.' Teacher, he declared, all these things I have kept since I was a boy. Jesus looked at him & loved him. 1 thing you lack, He said, Go, sell everything you have & give to the poor-- remember, he already was rich, & probably thought it wise to build more barns, & you will have treasure laid up in Heaven. Then come, follow Me. At this the man's face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth. Jesus looked around & said to His disciples, How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of GOD! The disciples were amazed at His words. But Jesus said again, Children, how hard it is to enter the Kingdom of GOD! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of GOD. The disciples were even more amazed, & said to each other, 'Who then can be saved? Is he saying that we must become remain as children-- become rich, sell all & give to the poor & follow him?)' Jesus looked at Them & said, With man this is impossible, but not with GOD; all things are possible with GOD. Peter said to Him, We have left everything to follow You! Were we ever rich & sold all? I tell You the truth, Jesus replied, no 1 who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for Me & the Gospel will fail to receive 100x as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children & fields-- & with them persecutions) & in the age to come, eternal life. But many who are 1st will be last, & the last 1st. 3 ways of looking at this: some who early on left all will remain as-is, because they do not grow in faith; some will obtain the original treasure in Heaven (perhaps even add significantly to it), but will subsequently fall behind because of actions (or reactions-- or in-actions); some will zoom ahead.
  • Luke 18:18-30 A certain ruler asked Him, Good teacher, what must I do to be inherit eternal life? Why do you call Me good? Jesus answered. No 1 is good-- except GOD Alone. You know the 5 commandments: 'Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father & mother-- which omits 'Love your neighbor as yourself (do not defraud). All these things I have done since I was a boy, he said. When Jesus heard this, He said to him, You still lack 1 thing. Sell all that you have & give to the poor, & you will have treasure in Heaven. Then come, & follow Me. When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was a man of great wealth. Jesus looked at him & said, How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of GOD! Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of GOD. Those who heard this asked, Who then can be saved? Jesus replied, What is impossible with men is possible with GOD. Peter said to Him, We have left all We had to follow You! I tell You the gospel truth, Jesus said to Them, No 1 who has left home or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the Kingdom of GOD will fail to receive many times as much in this age &, in the age to come, eternal life.
