44. Ref. forgiving (or not) a brother's debt-- 'from Your heart'
- Matt 18:21-35 Then Peter came to Jesus & asked, Lord, how many times shall I forgive My brother/sister when He/she sins against Me? Uo to 7 times? Jesus answered, I tell You, not 7 times, but 77 times. Therefore, the kingdom is like [a parable about the kingdom is] a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. As he began the settlement, a man who owed him 10,000 talents was brought to him. Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he & his wife & his children & all that he had be sold to repay the debt. The servant fell on his knees before him. 'Be patient with me,' he begged, '& I will pay back everything.' The servant's master took pity on him, canceled the debt & let him go. But when that servant went out, he found 1 of his fellow servants who owed him 100 denarii. He grabbed the man & began to choke him. 'Pay back what you owe me!' he demanded. His fellow servant fell to his knees & begged him, 'Be patient with me, & I will pay you back.' But he refused. Instead, he went off & had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. When the other servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed & went & told their master everything that had happened. Then the master called the servant in. 'You wicked servant,' he said, "I cancelled all the debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?' In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed. This is how My Heavenly FATHER will treat each of You unless You forgive Your from Your heart.
45. 'Take My yoke'; The 72 returned with joy [18] above
- Matt 11:25-30 At that time Jesus said, I praise YOU, FATHER, LORD of Heaven & earth, because YOU have hidden these things from the wise & learned, & revealed them to little children-- this was after he pronounced the woes to Korazin, Bethsaida & Capernaum. Yes, FATHER, for this was YOUR Good Pleasure. All things have been committed to Me by My FATHER. No 1 knows the FATHER except the Son & those to whom the Son chooses to reveal HIM. Come to Me, all you who are weary & burdened, & I will give you rest-- as Jesus said in another place (John 20:29), Blessed are those who don't see, & yet believe.Take My yoke upon you & learn from Me, for I am gentle & humble in heart, & you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is east & My burden is light.
- Mark
- Luke 10:17-24 The 72 returned with joy & said, Lord, even the demons submit to Us in Your name. He replied, I saw Satan fall like lightening from heaven. I have given You authority to trample on snakes & scorpions & to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm You. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to You, but rejoice that Your names are written in Heaven-- in short, 'be humble (in particular, don't lord-it over others, but consider yourself on-par with all whose names are written in Heaven). At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, I praise YOU, LORD of Heaven & earth, because YOU have hidden these things from the wise & learned, & revealed them to little children. Yes, FATHER, for this was YOUR Good Pleasure. All things have been committed to Me by My FATHER. No 1 knows who the FATHER is except the Son & those to whom the Son chooses to reveal HIM. Then He turned to His disciples & said privately, Blessed are the eyes that see what You see. For I tell You that many prophets & kings wanted to see what You see but They did not see it, & to hear what You hear but did not hear it-- for you 1st believed!
46. The "Good Samaritan parable" [18] above
- Matt
- Mark
- Luke 10:25-37 On 1 occasion an expert in the Law stood up to test Jesus. Teacher, He asked, what must I do to inherit eternal life? What is written in the Law? He replied. How do You read it? He answered, 'Love the LORD Your God with all Your heart & with all Your strength & with all Your mind' & 'Love Your neighbor as yourself'-- quotes from Deu 6:5 (which actually says soul instead of mind) & Lev 19:18. Deu 10:12; 11:13 & Jsh 22:5 have serve with all heart & soul. Deu 30:6 has, The LORD Your GOD will circumcise Your hearts & the hearts of Your descendants, so that You may love HIM with all Your heart & with all Your soul, & live (which was a promise that hinged upon loyalty). Jer 4:4 says (Jeremiah quoting God), 'Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, circumcise Your hearts, You men of Judah & people of Jerusalem, or MY wrath will break out & burn like fire because of the evil You have done-- burn with no 1 to quench it.' Do it or I will-- later. And quench it no 1 did until-- see Roma 2:28-29 (Roma 2:29c has, Such a man's praise is not from men, but from GOD). You have answered correctly, Jesus replied, Do this & You will live-- i.e., the way to do it is to have your heart circumcised. But He wanted to justify himself, so He asked Jesus, And who is My neighbor? In reply Jesus said: A man was going to down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him & went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, & when He saw the man, He passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when He came to the place & saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; & when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him & bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil & wine. Then he put the man om his own donkey, took him to an inn & took care of him. The next day he took out 2 silver coins & gave them to the innkeeper. 'Look after him,' he said, '& when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.' Which of these 3 do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers? The expert in the Law replied, The 1 who had mercy on him. Jesus told him, Go & do likewise.
47. Jesus met Martha & Mary [18] above
- Matt
- Mark
- Luke 10:38-42 As Jesus & His disciples were on their way, He came to a village where a woman named Martha opened Her home to Him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet, listening to what He said. But Martha the host was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. Martha did "right"; Mary did "wrong"-- but since Mary was consumed/interested in Jesus, her "wrong" was right in Jesus' eyes. She [Martha] came to Him & asked, Lord, don't You care that my sister has left Me the host to do the work by myself? Tell Her to help Me! Martha, Martha, the Lord answered, You are worried & upset about this & many things, but only 1 thing is needed. Mary has chosen whay is better, & it will not be taken away from Her.
48. Jesus gave the "model prayer" & portrays persistence [18] above
- Matt
- Mark
- Luke 11:1-13 1 day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When He finished, 1 of His disciples said to Him, Lord, teach as to pray, just as John taught His disciples-- it is not chronicled anywhere that John taught his disciples to pray, but we did see, John's disciples often fast & pray [see PerMtMkLk1 B.1.(3rd pt.)]. He said to Them, When You pray, say: FATHER (Our FATHER in Heaven), hallowed be YOUR Name, YOUR Kingdom come (come. May YOUR Will be done on earth as it is in Heaven). Give Us each day Our daily bread. Forgive Us Our sins, for We also forgive everyone who sins against Us (everyone who is indebted to us). And lead Us not into temptation (temptation but deliver Us from the evil 1-- i.e., if-so-be we do not forgive others & you do lead us into temptation, please also deliver us. Then He said to them about persistence, Suppose 1 of You has a friend, & He goes to him at midnight & says, 'Friend, lend Me 3 loaves of bread, because a friend of Mine on a journey has come to Me, & I have nothing to set before him.' Then the 1 inside answers, 'Don't bother me. The door is already locked, & my children are with me in bed. I can't get up & give You anything.' I tell You, though he will not get up & give Him the bread because [despite] he is His friend, yet because of the man's boldness (persistence) he will get up & give Him as much as He needs. So I say to You: Ask & it will be given You; seek [persist] & You will find; knock [persist more] & the door will be opened for You. For everyone who asks receives; He who seek finds; & to Him who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of You fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion. If You then, though You are evil [not circumcised at heart] , know how to give good gifts to Your children, how much more will Your FATHER in Heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask HIM.
49. Jesus again dealt with accusations & testing-- & spoke of a worse fate [18] above
- Matt
- Mark
- Luke 11:14-28
- This 1st subject (accusations) is a repeat: before we saw Jesus dealing with these same accusations-- much earlier, in Galilee [see PerMtMkLk3 B.8.(all pts.)]. But there the accusers were Pharisees & teachers of the Law (& the man healed was both blind & mute). Here in Judea, to the Judean crowd: Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, & the crowd was amazed. But some of them [the crowd] said, 'By Beelzebub, the prince of demons, He is driving out demons.
- This 2nd subject (testing) also is a repeat: here we have Jesus being tested--also earlier, but later than the 1st subject; also in Galilee; also not by the Pharisees & Sadducees [see PerMtMkLk7 B.29. (all pts.)], but by the Judean crowd. Others tested Him by asking for a sign from Heaven. Jesus knew their thoughts & said to them: Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, & a house divided against itself will fall. If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebub. Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your followers drive them out? so then, they will be your judges. But if I drive out demons by the Finger of GOD, then the Kingdom of GOD has come to you. When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. But when someone stronger attacks & overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted & divides up the spoils. He who is not with Me is against Me, & he who does not gather with Me, scatters. When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest & does not find it. Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.' When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean & put in order. Then it goes & finds 7 other spirits each more wicked than itself, & they go in & together live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the 1st. As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, Blessed is the mother who gave You birth & nursed You. He replied, Blessed rather more are those who hear the Word of GOD & obey it.
50. Jesus again (for the 3rd time) spoke of 'the sign of Jonah' [18] above
- Matt
- Mark
- Luke 11:29-32 This is a repeat-of-a-repeat about 1 subject-- a sign: As with the last topic, it is also directed to the Judean crowd rather than specifically to the Pharisees & Sadducees in Galilee-- for both the original & the repeat, see PerMtMkLk7 B.29.(all pts.): As the crowd increased, Jesus said, This is a wicked generation. It asks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will be the Son of man be to this generation when he is crucified & arises. Later the Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the men of this generation & condemn them who don't repent; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, & now 1 greater than Solomon is here. The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation & condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, & now 1 greater than Jonah is here.
